Welcome to the most wide open Tony Awards season in recent memory. Recent Broadway seasons have produced surefire winners like “Hamilton,” “The Band’s Visit,” or “Hadestown” that robbed awards season of some suspense. But the 2020 Tony race for Best Musical does not appear to include such a juggernaut, and there are plenty of new tuners with a viable path to victory. Now is the time to jump into our predictions center and make your early, gutsy Tony nomination picks.
SEEWho Needs a Tony to Reach Egot?
This season features a slew of jukebox musicals which use pre-existing song catalogs. “Moulin Rouge!” has proved the most popular so far, letting Karen Olivo and Aaron Tveit belt their faces off to pop hits on the most lush scenic design of the season. “Tina – The Tina Turner Musical” tells the real life story of the queen of rock n’ roll with a star making turn from Adrienne Warren,...

Where do I begin with this film The Inheritance? I guess the best place to start in the plot itself. Five cousins drive to their family reunion during a winter storm. They hope to please the elders and secure their inheritance, a fortune that dates back to days of slavery. Their Uncle Melvin (Keith David) welcomes them, but warns them to respect their family traditions. During the weekend, strange things start to appear, blood on the windows and they learn the truths about their family legacy, blood ancestor – Chakabazz, and the ultimate sacrifice they must make in order to get what they deserve.
When I saw the box art, I laughed to be honest. I wasn’t sure if it was a film about people inheriting someone’s decapitated head or a guy who went around like the headless horseman, slicing away heads like crazy. After seeing the film, I...

The Inheritance is an urban horror movie that follows five cousins, Karen (Golden Brooks), Henry (D.B. Woodside), Tyrone (Darrin Dewitt Henson), Lily (Rochelle Aytes), and Simpson (Shawn Michael Howard) on a “family reunion” type gathering to find out about their inheritance they will be receiving. Naturally it’s a horror movie so things start to go wrong for them after they arrive at the house, in the dead of winter and in the middle of nowhere. They find out things about their ancestors that they end up wishing would have just stayed a secret.
Their uncle Melvin (Keith David) plays host to the small group, there’s a party, people getting hammered and some begin to die. We see some crazy tribal shadows appear at times which are really creepy at times. Blood gets splattered and like I said before, more people die. Other relatives also show up and stories...

Director/writer: Robert O'Hara.
Tagline: "A new meaning to blood relatives."
Image Entertainment dropped Robert O'Hara's The Inheritance on DVD and Blu-Ray April 12th and the film is one of only a few which features an almost all African American cast. Rusty Cundieff came out with Tales from the Hood in 1991 and Snoop Dog produced Bones in 2001, but overall there have been few horror films with primarily African American actors. That is until now. Robert O'Hara has brought together an excellent cast for this film, including: Keith David (Platoon), Rochelle Aytes (Trick 'r Treat), Golden Brooks and many others. The film is a blend of supernatural mythos and slavery inspired superstition and the film works, except for a cut-off ending.
In the film, the cliche of the African American dying first in horror is reversed. Instead, two Caucasian characters wind up offed before anyone else, with few lines offered...

It's another lackluster week with barely any noteworthy titles to compete for your hard-earned dollars. However, you can prepare yourselves for Wes Craven's latest installment in the Scream franchise which is opening this week by getting your groove on with the Scream 4 soundtrack.
You'd be swaying with the likes of the franchise's returning stars, Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox, as well as new cast members Britt Robertson, Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Rory Culkin, Anna Paquin, Kristen Bell, Shenae Grimes, and Lucy Hale.
Other titles this week include The Inheritance directed by Robert O'Hara and starring Golden Brooks, Keith David, Db Woodside, Darrin Dewitt Henson, Rochelle Aytes; Mask Maker directed by Griff Furst and starring Nikki Deloache, Terry Kiser, Stephen Colletti, Jonathan Breck, Michael Berrymen, Treat Williams, Mariah Bonner, and A.J. Allegra; Black Heaven directed by Gilles Marchand and starring Gregoire Leprince-Ringuet, Louise Bourgoin, Melvil Poupaud; and...

Actor Keith David is well known among genre fans for his heroic roles in classics like John Carpenter's The Thing and They Live. But in his latest fright film, The Inheritance, David plays a more sinister character, one who invites his nieces and nephews to a family reunion, with the lure of a substantial inheritance, while harboring a devilish secret that could destroy them all. Due out tomorrow (Tuesday, April 12) on Blu-ray and DVD from Image Entertainment, The Inheritance is unique in that it's one of the few horror films I've seen with an almost entirely African-American cast. And it draws on the cultural history of African-Americans to create a new kind of movie monster – Chakabazz, an African deity as merciless...

Crazy how long some films sit on the shelf. Take, for instance, My Place in the Horror - a project first announced in 2008. Image Entertainment has given the film a home under the title The Inheritance and it arrives on DVD April 12. Written and directed by Robert O'Hara, it tells of five ambitious cousins who gather at a family homestead to claim an inheritance. They are thrust into a terrifying world of rituals, trances and demonic possessions as they compete for their share of a mysterious family fortune. You can check out a super early trailer, when it was under the Horror moniker, right here .

Recall Cynthia Stafford and her Queen Nefertari Productions – the African American lady who won over $100 million in her state’s lottery, and opted to use $30 million of the money to start a film production company… if you missed my post on that, read it Here.
We’ve been tracking her progress since the initial announcement of her production company’s creation, and so far, while I haven’t been too thrilled about some of the choices she’s made in her selection of projects to invest in, I can’t hate either. She’s trying to grow her company, and, with a supporting cast of industry-types advising her, I assume she’s making decisions that she feels will contribute to that end.
Most recently, we reported about the deals she made at the Sundance Film Festival – including one with the Butcher Brothers (actual names: Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores) and their gory exploitation horror feature,...

My post just below this one (on the lady – Cynthia Stafford – who won the lottery and started a film production company) led me to this film – My Place In The Horror, a horror/thriller that, if you read the post, would know that Stafford executive-produced, and likely financed, to the tune of $500,000, as IMDb Pro states.
The film was produced by Effie Brown (also a black woman) and her Duly Noted production company – an 8 or so year old venture. For those unfamiliar with either name, some titles Brown has produced in recent years include, Stranger Inside (directed by Cheryl Dunye, 2001); Real Women Have Curves (directed by Patricia Cardosa, 2002); and Everyday People (2004, Jim McKay). Brown later served as executive producer on In the Cut (2003, directed by Jane Campion). And there are others… she’s been around, and certainly has a resume to prove it.

Nice! She says she has several scripts with A-list names attached to them, ready to be produced. I could find info on 3 of those films, via IMDb Pro.
First, a film called Adrenaline, which is scheduled for a 2011 release. IMDb states that the film is a comedy about a “buttoned-up corporate guy who gets sucked into his crazy assistant’s scheme of seducing women by staging heroic acts, but bites off more than he can chew when he sets his sights on his beautiful but un-seducable co-worker.” Sounds interesting enough… although, no info is provided on who’s attached to star in it.
For the other 2 films, she’s listed strictly as executive producer, which could mean anything, but likely that she financed, or co-financed them. Each is listed as currently “in-production.” The first is titled My Place In The Horror – a thriller that stars Keith David,...
