Both "The Comet Section" and "Cotton Candy Coloured Glasses" had far better concepts than most episodes of 'My Little Pony: Pony Life' and had potential. Especially "The Comet Section", with a more original premise than the usual 'My Little Pony: Pony Life' episode that had potential for tension. Was on the whole disappointed with how Rarity was written in Season 1, where almost all the episodes centered around her made too diva-ish and melodramatic.
That surprisingly does not happen in either "The Comet Section" and "Cotton Candy Coloured Glasses", despite it being a big danger in the latter. Character moments and writing wise, there is a noticeable improvement here and in the previous episode compared to the first season (though neither are perfect still, far from it). And both segments are the best, or more like among the least problematic, episodes of 'Pony Life' (especially "The Comet Section"). Neither are particularly great either, with the stories not being strong enough and the quality of both are inconsistent. Inconsistent is at least a good deal better than mediocre or downright weak like most of Season 1, but both could have been so much more. Especially "Cotton Candy Coloured Glasses".
In both episodes there are good things. The best aspect is the voice acting which is very good all round, full of energy and nuanced. The character writing is some of the best of the show up to this date and overall, with all the main characters not having flaws exaggerated and having good intentions. Really appreciated that Rarity was neither a diva or melodramatic, and found her feelings relatable in "Cotton Candy Coloured Glasses", as it is very like my behaviour in similar situations when under anxiety and stress. The character interaction is pretty good in "The Comet Section."
Which is the better segment of the two, due to more inventive visuals and ideas (in one of the better looking 'Pony Life' segments). There is also here a little more humour than usual and some of it amuses. They both start off very well.
Both also could have been better, especially "Cotton Candy Coloured Glasses". "The Comet Section" could have done with more thrills and excitement, with it thinning out towards the end and becoming predictable. "Cotton Candy Coloured Glasses" is very thin and over-stretched as well as too repetitive. While the morals are very well intended and are not laid on too thick, they are also very rehashed and have been done before and better on the infinitely superior 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic'. While the writing has a little more spark than the usual 'Pony Life' episode, it is still too bland and too simple.
While the character writing improves vastly here, it is still too simple and stereotyped while the supporting characters are largely unmemorable. The animation lacks imagination and looks rushed on the whole, excepting moments in "The Comet Section", and the music is high school quality with a grating theme tune.
Overall, better than most episodes of the show but neither come off as well as they could have done. 5/10.
