Fortunes of War heads for an epic finish or at least goes for the top of a pyramid.

Guy is grieving in Cairo from the news that the ship Harriet was travelling to England in had sunk.

In fact Harriet is having a merry old time in Damascus with some new friends she has made. There is always a local with an eye for a pretty lady. Harriet is never alone.

Aiden Pratt the actor hopes to kindle something with Guy now that he is single. Inviting Guy to a holiday break which Guy rejects. Aidan eventually shoots himself. It is Simon Boulderstone whose laughter in hospital brings some spirit into Guy.

The poet Bill Castlebar and Edwina Little who find Harriet in Damascus and brings her back to Guy.

Writer Alan Plater did well to tie up the sprawling stories. The war was a backdrop where people get killed or injured. It was also the background of the decline of an empire. Many of the gun shots that ring out is not the Germans, it is the locals who want independence. The character just do not fathom that it is the dying days of the British empire.
