When TV Guests Go Horribly Wrong
jboothmillard20 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
When I read about this documentary programme advertised, I recognised a couple of the things mentioned that would be included, and I had my guesses of what else may be included, so I was really looking forward to watching. Basically, the show was a three-hour collection of clips, focusing on the mostly negative moments on television and public, including on the news, live broadcasts, interviews, entertainment shows, discussion shows, and much more.

These moments included live or pre-recorded mistakes, embarrassing incidents, technical errors, tasteless or inappropriate material that caused controversy, laughably bad stuff, and many more, all based around celebrity guests on TV, in Britain and/or around the world.

Morning TV going wrong included: 30th anniversary This Morning celebration in Albert Dock, Liverpool, where Alison Hammond knocked one of two topless models dressed as sailors into the water on a floating map; and GMTV Entertainment Today, where David Hasselhoff "the Hoff" flirted with Jenni Falconer, without talking about his movie, single or autobiography as he asked her about her boyfriend. TV guests going horribly wrong included: American entrepreneur Jennifer Arcuri interviewed by Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid on Good Morning Britain, she refused to answer any questions about her alleged affair with Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and Lorraine Kelly appeared and said "what was the point?"; Australian comedian Pamela Stephenson appearing on TV-AM, she wanted to remove Nick Owen's trousers and "grab his ghoulies", then messed his hair with tomato ketchup, Owens had back problems and this incident put him back in hospital; on One Hour with Jonathan Ross, with Siouxsie Sioux and Paul Morley, and acid house music promoter Tony Colston-Hayter who handcuffed himself to Jonathan, this was a protest for the Freedom to Party campaign, Paul called him "pillock" and grabbed his hat and threw it away, Tony then threw water on Paul, Tony went to prison years later for fraud. Other TV guest blunders included: Tony Wrighton interviewi Japanese pool player Naoyuki Oi at the World Pool Championship, he could not speak much English and acts bizarrely, this clip went viral; cricketer Monty Panesar on Celebrity Mastermind failed on general knowledge, he panicked and just said anything random that popped into his head, including "Harry Potter" on a question about the Wind in the Willows stage show, "The Dream Boys" instead of "The Full Monty" (coincidentally the name of his autobiography!), and "Oliver Twist" on a question about a poem; Sir Ben Kingsley interviewed by Poppy Jamie, he was not in the mood to talk about Night at the Museum 3, he was disinterested, very sarcastic and rude to her. More TV guest calamities included: Fire and Fury author Michael Wolff was interviewed on Australian morning show Today, the book details President Donald Trump's first year in office, interviewer Ben Fordham asked Wolff if he knows if Trump is having an affair, Wolff claims he cannot hear him, removes his earpiece and he walks off, this was obviously fake to avoid answering the question, and it was confirmed by the released audio; on BBC Politics Live, Brexiteer MP Mark Francois and writer and broadcaster Will Self talking about Brexit, they argued when there was a claim of racism, the two men stare at each other while host Jo Coburn talked to the other two women on the panel, this went viral. Further TV guest fails included: Australia Channel 9's Today Extra interview Tara Reid about the latest Sharknado movie, she is slurring whilst talking, the time delay caused them to talk over each other at times, and she rambled a few times; Sky News was live from Westminster after a hung parliament result in 2010, Alastair Campbell and Adam Boulton have a live argument as they wind each other up, there were complaints to Ofcom; Richard Madeley filled in for Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain, defence secretary Gavin Williamson was interviewed about a project in Africa for conservation of elephants, Madeley then asked if he regrets saying "shut up and go away" to the Russians, during the allegations of Russia's suspected involvement in the Salisbury poisoning affair, Williamson evades answering, Richard keeps asking him to answer the simple question, but after a few tries they terminated the interview; and Gloria Hunniford interviewed Bruce Forsyth on morning magazine show Open House, half of the audience were absent as the bus bringing them was stuck at Paddington Station, the rest of the people turn up during the live interview, Brucie could not ignore it and went to personally greet all the many elderly ladies as they entered the studio. More TV guest mishaps included: This Morning live in Chesil Beach, Dorset, John Torode was cooking crab and linguine when a helicopter approaches and is landing, the propellor blows everything off the table, presenters Davina McCall and Rochelle Humes are laughing at the chaos, the camera cuts to the chopper, and the clip was repeated on the show; Saturday Kitchen Live with the Hairy Bikers (Dave Myers and Si King) were making a summer pudding, they put it together and try to take it out the bowl, it gets stuck, and when they cut around it the pudding comes out and breaks up; and at the Royal Variety Performance 1980, Sammy Davis Jr. Introduced actor Larry Hagman, Dallas at the time had the successful "Who Shot J. R." storyline, he sings "My Favourite Sins", but he has forgotten the words, sings gibberish and tries to start again, he nervously laughs off his embarrassment. Further TV guests gone wrong included: Good Morning Britain presenters Ben Shepard and Kate Garraway interview William Shatner live at the Birmingham NEC, appearing at the convention for the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, he is on the phone talking to them, he mocks viewers' questions and does not play ball; Josie Lawrence appeared on This Morning with hosts Liz Hobbs and Andy Craig, they give her a birthday cake, she blows the candles out and her hair hanging down catches fire, they put it out with her hands; and cultural arts programme Take Two, which took two guests with opposing views, ask a question and have them discuss it, singer Dorothy Squires (Roger Moore's former wife) and actress Adrienne Corri (A Clockwork Orange) discuss the saying "there's no business like show business", the debate turns into a catfight, they are both big egos, up themselves and very nasty to each other. Music related TV guests going wrong included: Phillip Schofield hosting the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party, Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine performed and wrecked their equipment, Phillip tried to make light of the situation with sarcasm, he was knocked over by the guitarist; The Stone Roses performed on The Late Show, their performance was interrupted when there was a power cut and the music stopped, singer Ian Brown was unhappy; Prince, then The Artist Formerly Known as Prince, was interviewed on the Sunday Show, with a glittery face covering and refusing to speak, with questions answered by a dancer; and youth programme Check It Out had Public Image Ltd (PiL) interviewed by Chris Cowey, lead vocalist Johnny Rotten was annoyed, then he was shown a clip of Mond Cowie from The Angelic Upstarts criticising him, he was irritated and swore, he walked off, and the other band members also kicked off. TV guests going wrong also included: wrestler Giant Haystacks was interviewed by Jackie Fullerton on Good Evening Ulster, he was asked to demonstrate a body slam, he picked Jackie up and threw him to the floor, he was in pain; Friday Night Saturday Morning was guest hosted by former Prime Minister Harold Wilson, he interviewed Coronation Street star Pat Phoenix, he was very posh, rambling. Not complimenting her and very slow with his questions; and at the British Comedy Awards, Spike Milligan was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award for Comedy, Jonathan Ross read a letter from Prince Charles, the audience are in hysterics as Spike jokingly called him a "little grovelling b*****d". The last TV guest mishap moments included: member of the public Dorothy Clarke is unprepared on Question Time live; on a Russian discussion show talking about youth culture, there are three drunken teenagers, one of them got up and fell forward across the audience, he was dragged out by security; and Jayne Mansfield was presenting the Special Award at the Golden Globe Awards, the Mexican comedian Mario Moreno (Cantinflas) was awarded, Mickey Rooney accepted the award on his behalf, Rooney is distracted being short and being right next to Jayne's cleavage, she was flirtatious as he tried to continue a speech.

I had my guesses what TV moments would be included, the bad ones, the funny or unfunny ones and the awkward ones. I always enjoy the nostalgia seeing these moments again, but it was good to learn about those I did not know, and the serious stuff as well, overall it was an interesting and watchable documentary.

Narrated by Kate Garraway, with contributions from Strictly Come Dancing's Flavia Cacace-Mistry, presenter Joe Cooper, Chris Cowey, Anne Diamond, Jenni Falconer, presenter Jackie Fullerton, Trisha Goddard, presenter David Hamilton, Gloria Hunniford, presenter Storm Huntley, Shappi Khorsandi, presenter Eric Knowles, actor and comedian Mark Little, Fake Britain's Dominic Littlewood, Siân Lloyd, Aggie Mackenzie, presenter Sam Mann, Paul Morley, Spitting Image's Steve Nallon, weather forecaster Clare Nasir, actress Gemma Oaten, Nick Owen, Monty Panesar, presenter Ellie Phillips, presenter Robyn Richford, Homes Under the Hammer's Martin Roberts, Katie Robbins, comedy historian Robert Ross, presenter Will Self, actor and comedian Tony Slattery, presenter and DJ Glen Thompsett, presenter Laura Tobin, Celebrity Big Brother's James Whale, and presenter Tony Wrighton.
