One Sunday morning, with nothing suitable on the horizon to watch with my son, I decided to give the "Jurassic World" animated series a try, and ended up watching all of it in a single session. Whilst I wouldn't suggest that it's so good as to be considered a hidden gem, it was decent family friendly entertainment, with some nice tie ins to the film.

Darius Bowman (Paul-Mikel Williams) wins an all expenses paid trip to Jurassic Worlds new Camp Cretaceous outbound centre, a tree top playground-cum-learning experience that is soon to open to the public. He's joined by five other children of similar ages and their councillors Roxie (Jameela Jamil) and Dave (Glen Powell). Unfortunately, they are present on the island on the day that the Indominus Rex breaks loose, and causes havoc, destroying several paddocks and walls. With all manner of dinosaurs loose, the gang try to make their way to the docks, before the last ship leaves.

From an animation standpoint, "Camp Cretaceous" is OK. The human characters are, if I'm honest, a little plasticky looking and lacking in definition and variety, but the Dinosaurs are really well done, and their movement and definition is really sharp. The story is a little so so. The opening idea of Darius winning his place via a video game made me laugh as it was so similar to the "Scooby Doo Wrestlemania Mystery", that I watched a few weeks back. From there, they have a scrape with a dinosaur each episode - there is peril in each, so the tension might be a bit much for some smaller children, there are also fatalities along the way - but nothing brutal is really shown.

I liked how it integrated with the "Jurassic World" film. With the Rex running from one scene to the other and with actions like the helicopter crash having a knock on effect on these characters also. The show improves once Indominus is out, as the first two encounters with the dangerous dinos are a little contrived.

If you really like the "Jurassic" franchise, there's stuff here to appreciate - but there's not as much in this for adults as other similar shows have.
