A24 has released the first official look at Sean Baker’s “Red Rocket” ahead of the film’s world premiere next month in competition at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. “Red Rocket” is Baker’s first Palme d’Or contender, although he’s no stranger to Cannes as his last directorial effort, “The Florida Project,” was one of the most acclaimed breakouts in the Directors’ Fortnight sidebar of the 2017 festival. Baker’s previous efforts screened at festivals such as Sundance (“Tangerine”), SXSW (“Starlet”), and more.
While A24 has not released an official synopsis for “Red Rocket,” here’s how Deadline described the movie when it was first announced last year: “‘Red Rocket’ is a darkly comedic film about Mikey Saber, a 39-year old ‘suitcase pimp.’ That is the kind of pimp who lives off of women in the adult film industry. Finding himself down and out in Los Angeles, Mikey decides...

Photo: 'The Boy From Medellin'/Amazon Prime Directed by Matthew Heineman, 'The Boy From Medellin' gives an intimate, honest look at international superstar singer J Balvin, who many have crowned the Prince Of Reggaeton, as he makes an emotional journey back to his home country of Colombia, specifically his city Medellin. The documentary takes place in the week leading up to his once-in-a-lifetime performance at a sold-out stadium in Medellin, showing fans glimpses of his journey from humble beginnings to pop culture phenomenon, and how that journey summoned him back to Colombia to bring his destiny full circle. Heineman, however, is less focused on the glitz and glamour of fame, and in doing so focuses his camera and eye on the man instead of the artist. J Balvin has released a new trailer for his documentary, The Boy From Medellín, which is set to arrive on Amazon Prime Video May 7th.
The documentary follows J Balvin throughout the week leading up to a massive homecoming show at the Estadio Atanasio Girardot in Medellín, Colombia, in December 2019. The show also happened to coincide with a swell of protests throughout Colombia against corruption, police brutality (including the death of an 18-year-old who was hit by a police projectile), and various austerity measures being imposed by Colombia’s conservative government.

Music documentary about the reggaeton superstar opens on Amazon Prime Video May 7
In the music documentary “The Boy From Medellín,” Colombian reggaeton superstar J Balvin is prepping for a massive concert in his hometown of Medellín — a show that will host up to 45,000 people — only for protests to break out in the city’s streets.
The documentary depicts the anxiety and depression that have plagued Balvin for years whenever he’s offstage, but the new decision of whether to amplify the voices of young people protesting and being persecuted by the government leaves him torn about how to use his platform.
“If you speak up, it’s wrong. If you don’t, it’s wrong. So either way, you lose,” a confidant says to him in the trailer. “I don’t want to get into political things because it’s not my thing. I just want to focus on bringing light into the world,...

If you don’t know the work of Academy Award®-nominated and Emmy-winning filmmaker Matthew Heineman, you really outta change that. A cameraman and cinematographer on top of being a documentarian, Heineman’s work is always super cinematic, super intimate, and seems even to blur the lines of fact and fiction; he gets into such personal spaces, it seems impossible that moments aren’t staged, but they aren’t.

The past year in lockdown may make the idea of a comedy about being stuck in an endlessly repeating loop feel a little too close to home, but Palm Springs starring Andy Samburg and Cristin Milioti, which arrives on Friday the 9th of April, is fresh and funny and well worth your time. For something more serious and very well regarded, there’s Sound of Metal on Monday the 12th, starring Riz Ahmed as a heavy metal drummer losing his hearing. And if lockdown’s simply been too much fun and you need bringing back down to earth with a bleak tale of German teenage drug addiction, there’s We Children from Bahnhof Zoo.

National Geographic Documentary Films and Neon have revealed the first details of “The First Wave,” a Covid-19 documentary from “Cartel Land” Oscar nominee Matthew Heineman. Below find a teaser for the film, which was shot with exclusive access inside one of New York City’s hardest-hit hospitals during the pandemic’s early days.
Neon will release the film in theaters later this year domestically ahead of a broadcast premiere on National Geographic in 172 countries.
“I feel deeply honored that I had the opportunity to document — through our subjects over four terrifying months — the impact of this pandemic. It has forced us to question everything, the fragility of our lives, and the way we live,” Heineman said. “The film explores every aspect of the human condition — fear and courage, death and birth, and the inescapable weight of trauma, both the kind that is deeply held and also newly experienced. Before J. Balvin became a record-breaking chart-topper, he was José Álvaro Osorio Balvín, just another boy in Medellín, Colombia, with big dreams and an even bigger drive to make them come true. In Matthew Heineman’s documentary, the pop star alternates between his carefree onstage persona and who he is when the cameras and fans aren’t around. He’s especially open about his struggles with mental illness in an effort to destigmatize the subject for his fans and listeners.

J Balvin is nervous. He might be a multi-award-winning pop star and the best-known face of the most popular music genre of the moment — yes, Reggaeton is even bigger than Kpop — but he’s a week out of a homecoming concert in Medellín, Colombia, his first solo stadium gig. And his throat is sore.
A close member of his entourage tries to encourage him, “You’ve got nothing to worry about. It’s already sold out.”
José Álvaro Osorio Balvin is one of the most upfront celebrities about mental health in the world. He has spoken about anxiety and depression movingly and often in acceptance speeches, on Instagram Live and on his songs, many of which have a billion streams or more. Matthew Heineman’s close-up documentary, The Boy from Medellín, is just the latest contribution to a growing literature. It’s also a lot more than that.

Do even the most apolitical artists have a responsibility to find and take a stand when society is crumbling, or should the forms of pop that have always ridden along on surface pleasures still be allowed to be a demilitarized zone? These are questions that clearly face all marquee American entertainers in the fall of 2020, if only long enough to dismiss them. They faced Latin superstar J Balvin in a bigger way last November when a personally triumphant hometown stadium show happened to coincide with his native Colombia reaching a flashpoint of historic turmoil. It also coincided with Balvin being followed by a documentary crew in the week before the gig, resulting in “The Boy From Medellin,” an Amazon original that shows the reggaeton singer being forced to develop a political conscience, whether he wants one or not.

Matthew Heineman has spent his entire career shooting hell from the inside out, and after a string of hyper-visceral films about drug smuggling (“Cartel Land”), the Syrian civil war (“City of Ghosts”), and a journalist who died covering it (“A Private War”), you’d be forgiven for assuming that his “The Boy from Medellín” is a real-life version of the guts and glory Pablo Escobar biopic that Vinny Chase starred in on “Entourage.” But it turns out that Heineman’s latest documentary is a very different vision of Colombia — one seen through the eyes of a very different (but no less famous) Colombian. And while it’s not short on political violence and volatility, the hell that it captures is of a more interior sort, and seemingly only a stone’s throw away from heaven.

What the Cannes virtual marketplace proved earlier this year is that even without the in-person meetings, the red carpet galas and all the press hype, there’s still room for a lucrative sales market surrounding these virtual events. While that’s true of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, the hybrid physical and virtual fest is operating on a slimmed down lineup of movies. And with Oscar eligibility requirements pushed back to 2021, there isn’t the same need for all of these movies to make a splash. That said, we are looking forward to quite a bit at this year’s TIFF, and so are buyers.
