Genndy Tartakovsky's 2001 animated series "Samurai Jack" is probably one of the best of its era. The series boasted a peculiar and stoic tone, with the title hero (Phil Lamarr) staying quiet for vast blocks of the show. Samurai Jack was lost in the distant future, thanks to the sorcery of a tricky trickster god named Aku, and a lot of the series was devoted to Jack's exploration of strange, new alien settings. "Samurai Jack." also featured a unique, neo-cubist aesthetic; characters didn't have black-line outlines, and backgrounds were often abstract and blocky. Fans will also hasten to add the overwhelmingly awesome action of "Samurai Jack." If one is animating with blocky shapes and abstract backgrounds, the action can be just as stylized. The fight scenes on "Samurai Jack" are the stuff of legend.
"Samurai Jack" ran until 2004, and there had long been plans to adapt the series into a live-action feature film.

Where’s Academy Award-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody been since “Tully,” her last produced feature-length screen credit? Well, kind of everywhere actually. She’s penned the upcoming Untitled Madonna Biopic, she has an untitled HBO project in the works for David Spade, she worked on the revamped “Powerpuff” TV series that still hasn’t aired, and has written a bunch of TV movies too.

For many decades, the four-day Memorial Day weekend has been a banner time for people to flock to movie theaters. While many schools around the country are still in session and people still have work, it’s the official kick-off of the summer for many, which is why studios frequently will grab the weekend for their potential summer tentpoles. In the past 15 years, seven movies have grossed more than 100 million over the four-day weekend, but Steven Spielberg’s “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” held the holiday weekend record since opening in 1997 until “X-Men: The Last Stand” came along in 2006.
The past two years have seen a far reduced Memorial Day, although last year, “A Quiet Place Part II” and Disney’s “Cruella” showed possible signs of movie theaters returning a few months after the top two markets, New York City and Los Angeles, reopened. The two movies grossed 83.5 million between them over the four-day weekend.

It looks like The CW will have to find a new Powerpuff Girl to fill Blossom's Mary Janes, so someone tell Mojo Jojo to put any evil plans on hold, please. According to Variety, Chloe Bennett will no longer be playing Blossom in the Powerpuff Girls live-action reboot.
After deep criticism from fans about the show's wardrobe choices, the network decided to put the project on hold to reshoot specific scenes and redevelop the series, making many fans skeptical that the project is still happening at all. As a result of the series, currently titled Powerpuff, being pushed back, Warner Bros. Television tried to extend Bennet's contract, but scheduling conflicts reportedly forced her to leave the show. To turn the crime-fighting duo back into a trio, The CW will begin casting for Blossom in the fall.

The CW's live-action iteration of The Powerpuff Girls has hit another snag.
Chloe Bennet is out of the pilot, according to Variety.
The role of Blossom will be recast.
Powerpuff was in development for the 2021-22 TV season on the young-skewing network, but the channel opted to retool the series post-pilot.
“Sometimes things miss, and this was just a miss,” CW Chairman & CEO Mark Pedowitz told reporters earlier this year.
“We believe in the cast completely, we believe in Diablo [Cody] and Heather [Regnier], the writers, and we believe in the auspices of [executive producer] Greg Berlanti and Warner [Bros.] Studios."
"In this case, the pilot didn’t work. But because we see enough elements in there, we’re going to give it another shot. We didn’t want to go forward with what we had.”

The CW’s Powerpuff live-action pilot has lost one of its crimefighters as star Chloe Bennet exits from the project, Deadline has confirmed.
The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. alum was set to star as Blossom, opposite Dove Cameron and Yana Perrault who will appear as Bubbles and Buttercup, respectively. Sources say that the actress did not sign a new deal to stay on the project due to scheduling issues. Cameron and Perrault will stay on as the remaining Powerpuff Girls but the search for a new Blossom will begin in the coming months.
Her exit from the reboot comes about three months after The CW’s Mark Pedowitz explained that the live-action pilot will be reworked.

The CW has lost one of its Powerpuff Girls. Chloe Bennet, who was set to star as the grown-up version of Blossom, is leaving the project, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap.
Bennet’s exit is due to scheduling conflicts when the studio, Warner Bros. TV, tried to extend her option. The pilot was surprisingly passed on during this past season’s development cycle and is currently undergoing a redo. Casting for a new Blossom will begin in the fall.
The live-action adaptation of “The Powerpuff Girls,” which would have centered on the trio as adults, was one of the most anticipated pilots this year, with Diablo Cody co-writing and Greg Berlanti on board as executive producer.
“The reason we do pilots is sometimes things miss,” The CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz explained on a call with reporters back in May. “This was just a miss.

Casting director Linda Lamontagne got her start in sitcoms including “Roseanne” and “Cybill” in the early 1990s but less than a decade later she made a full-time pivot to voiceover for animated comedies and films. Crediting “Family Guy” as the title that truly turned the tide for her, she then went onto such projects as “The Magic School Bus Rides Again” franchise, “The Angry Birds” movie, “The Powerpuff Girls,” “Tuca & Bertie” and, most recently, “Invincible,” for Amazon Prime Video.

The CW is the fifth — and final — broadcast network to firm up its fall 2021 schedule, and there are some big changes.
Riverdale is leaving Wednesdays behind after five seasons leading off the night.
The buzzy teen drama is moving to Tuesdays at 9/8c, out of The Flash.
It’s a big move, but clearly, one to bolster the ratings of the young-skewing drama.
It has been on a slippery slope in the ratings, much like many of the other CW series, so the move is hardly a big surprise.
The CW is also touting both The Flash and Riverdale kicking off with “five-episode events.”
The Flash‘s five-episode event will feature crossovers with Arrowverse characters.
“We’re talking about other superheroes from the CWverse that will come together in each [of the] individual episodes,” CW CEO Mark Pedowitz said of the news.

The CW’s pilot of “Powerpuff,” the live-action series based on the popular Cartoon Network animated show “The Powerpuff Girls,” is being overhauled and re-shot because the initial pilot was “too campy” and not as rooted in reality as network execs would have liked. The show generated significant interest from the time it was first reported as being in development and was seen as a strong contender for a pickup going into pilot season.
The potential “Nancy Drew” spinoff “Tom Swift” remains in contention at the network. The character, played by Tian Richards, recently appeared in an episode of “Nancy Drew.” And finally,...

One of the CW’s highest-profile pilots, Powerpuff, is not going to series — at least not yet.
Ahead of the CW’s fall 2021 schedule announcement tomorrow, the network has made decisions on the bulk of its six 2021 pilots, handing series orders to Naomi and All American: Homecoming.
Powerpuff, based on the original Cartoon Network animated series, will be reworked and repiloted off-cycle. The four leads — Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron, Yana Perrault and Donald Faison — as well as other cast and the writers-producers all remain on board the project, from Warner Bros TV/Berlanti Prods.
Tom Swift, a spinoff of Nancy Drew, remains in consideration. The CBS Studios/Fake Empire-produced project did not do a traditional backdoor pilot; instead the character Tom Swift, played by Tian Richards, appeared in a Nancy Drew episode, and the network also ordered a pilot script. When Disney+ released the full poster for its latest Marvel series Loki, many fans had a similar reaction. “Yeah it’s nice to see Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, and Wunmi Mosaku, but…tell me more about that smiling orange clock in the bottom left.”

As we head into the first broadcast upfront presentations on Monday, the two networks that are going up first, NBC and Fox, have made the decisions on their outstanding pilots. This leaves ABC and CBS, which also are presenting next week, as well as the CW, which has some leeway as it is not unveiling its fall 2021 schedule until the week after. Things have never been murkier so close to showtime but here is what I have heard since publishing the initial 2021 Pilot Buzz last week.
No major changes at the front of the ABC echelon, with The Wonder Years reboot, from Saladin Patterson, the original series’ Fred Savage and Lee Daniels, and drama Queens, headlined by Brandy, Eve, Naturi Naughton, Nadine Velazquez and Pepi Sonuga, staying hot through the screenings and still looking good.
Comedy pilot Maggie lived up to the “dark horse” moniker I gave it in the original handicap.

Cartoon Network Studios debuted a new iteration of its animated shorts program, Cartoon Cartoons, its first dedicated shorts initiative in over a decade that will look to showcase diverse stories, discover new creative voices and mentor the next generation of animators.
The program’s predecessor, an animated incubator, began in 1995 as World Premiere Toons, and the initiative has over the years launched popular, award-winning series such as Genndy Tartakovsky’s “Dexter’s Laboratory,” Craig McCracken’s “The Powerpuff Girls,” C.H. Greenblatt’s “Chowder,” J.G. Quintel’s “Regular Show” and Rebecca Sugar’s “Steven Universe.”
“Cartoon Network Studios has a proud legacy of animated shorts,” said Cartoon Network Studios and Warner Bros. We should have known those Powerpuff Girls pictures weren't telling the whole story. Last week, several pics emerged from the set of the CW's live action reboot of The Powerpuff Girls, and fans were left a little confused. It looked a bit, as some Twitter users said, like the costumes came from a budget Halloween store. One tweet that went viral described it as an "unironic porn parody." The costumes consisted of simple, boxy dresses in bright colors, and while they looked almost exactly like what the girls wear in the cartoon, many were expecting something a bit more sophisticated for the real thing. But as anyone who has ever watched a CW superhero pilot will know, classic-looking...
