Have not really been wowed by Rainbow Dash's character writing so far in 'My Little Pony: Pony Life'. She hasn't been intolerable as such, and her flaws here aren't as exaggerated here as they were in "Best of the Worst", but she hasn't been in any episode that has made her relatable. Have however liked Fluttershy on the most part, the problem is all the storylines centered around her have been wastes of potential or really quite bad. 'My Little Pony: Pony Life' was a real disappointment as a show, but am still watching to give it a fair chance.
Will admit to not expecting much from particularly "Zound Off", this is not the first time that 'Pony Life' has included modern technology or any form of modern content and not one time was it done successfully. This is including here, though not quite as badly as "One Click Wonder". "Unboxing Day" was a little more appealing, due to focusing on Fluttershy, but there was never anything special or memorable about it despite it being one of Fluttershy's least bad storylines up to this point.
"Zound Off" really didn't work, with too much of an over-reliance on apps and technology. None of it inventive or clever, actually found it all very tired, gimmicky and repetitive, with the humour being even more contrived, and while the subject (not an appealing one in the first place) is relevant the content already has an out of date feel. Rainbow Dash comes over as bland as well as over zealous.
"Unboxing Day" appeals a little more, with some amusing moments and Fluttershy is likeable in this situation with no flaws overdone. It does suffer though from being very bland on the whole, thinly plotted (too often uneventful) and dull pacing from feeling over-stretched.
Coming onto the individual elements, nothing is imaginative or vibrant about the animation, which is rushed and careless looking throughout. Indicative of rushed deadlines and low budget. The music is like cheesy high school quality and never fits with what goes on. The theme tune is grating. Apart from some moments in "Unboxing Day", the humour is too forced and juvenile as well as too far and between.
The stories for both are predictable and unimaginative, or at least that's when there's signs of any. With the exception of Fluttershy, the characters don't engage and once again, after 'Friendship is Magic' did so well breaking away from the "only for primary school period girls" stereotypes wrongly associated with the franchise for so long, the characters come over as dumbed down stereotypes with that target audience stereotype being reinforced. The chemistry is static and doesn't come over as a friendship.
Despite how all that sounds, there are redeeming merits. Ashleigh Ball and Andrea Libman excel in spirited and nuanced voice work. There are amusing moments in "Unboxing Day", even if mildly amusing than hilarious. Fluttershy is likeable.
Summarising, one poor segment and one semi-watchable if nothing special one. Not an awful lot to write home about. 4/10.
