Betta St. John, who portrayed the lovely island girl Liat in the original Broadway production of South Pacific and starred as a princess alongside Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr in the MGM romantic comedy Dream Wife, has died. She was 93.
St. John died June 23 of natural causes at an assisted living facility in Brighton, England, her son, TV producer Roger Grant, told The Hollywood Reporter.
The California native played one of the survivors of an airline crash, who is chased by a crocodile in Tarzan and the Lost Safari (1957) — the first Tarzan film in 15 years and the first one in color — and then returned for Tarzan the Magnificent (1960). Both films starred Gordon Scott as the King of the Jungle.

“Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” might not spotlight characters from the original 1978 film like Didi Conn’s Frenchy or Stockard Channing’s Rizzo, but it does set the stage for their impending reign on Rydell High.
Though tampering with any reiteration of the cultural cornerstone that is “Grease” has proven unsuccessful in the past, showrunner Annabel Oakes was clearly up for the challenge. So, how does one begin to cast the characters for a prequel television series based on the beloved movie? Casting directors Leigh Ann Smith and Conrad Woolfe of Indigo Casting accredit showrunner Oakes’ clear vision.
“[Oakes] had lived in that world with these characters for so long,” Smith tells Variety. Adds Woolfe, “We didn’t necessarily feel pressure [casting these characters] because Oakes had done such an incredible job of expanding the universe in her imagination before we even came to the table to do the casting.”

Get in touch to send in cinephile news and discoveries.NEWSLast weekend the generally derided yet fiercely observed Golden Globes winners were announced 2016, which included La La Land (Best Director, Screenplay, Song, Score and Actor, Actress and picture for a musical/comedy), Moonlight (Best Drama), and Elle (Best Foreign Language film, Best Actress for a drama).Okay, it's not strictly cinema news, but 18 episodes of new moving pictures directed by David Lynch counts as news to us! Showtime has revealed the number of episodes of the upcoming season of Twin Peaks, all directed by Lynch, and that the two-hour premiere of the show will be on May 21, immediately followed by the digital release of the third and forth episodes. Those film professionals who will be in Cannes at the time better plan on skipping their Monday morning screenings!Great news for those, like us, still enamored by celluloid: Kodak has...

It sure makes us wish our neighborhood multiplex gave a damn about conjuring excitement for going out to the movies. We love Hou Hsiao Hsien's The Assassin, but it undoubtedly a difficult film to market. Most trailers have tried to pass of this contemplative drama as an action movie, but the above trailer gets the closest, so far, to the tone of the entire film.Speaking of trailers, we don't know what to say or think about the one for Michael Bay's 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, which seems to be combining the lean look of his great Pain & Gain with the "seriousness" of Pearl Harbor and his gross, overall...

Everybody knows the name of the next big modern comic book movie, but not many knows what’s going on in the land of Direct-To-Video action movies. Some may refer to it as the garbage bin, while others may call it ‘the last frontier of the old school action movie’. Ever wonder what the washed-up action stars are doing when they are not in Expendables movies? With more talented directors in Dtv action than there has been in God knows how long the future is looking bright for the heroes of yesteryear.
2014 has several interesting Dtv projects in the pipeline that might skip theaters, but could still give you a damn good time if you turn your brain off beforehand.
Honourable Mention: Full Love/The Eagle Path/Soldiers
The Eagle Path has been Van Damme’s pet project for years with him directing, writing, producing and starring in the movie.

The action film star reveals how Stallone, marriage to a good woman and dogs pulled him back from the drug-fuelled brink
Where is Jean-Claude Van Damme? We were supposed to meet in London, until he cancelled his trip at the last minute. Then I was to visit him on a film set in Budapest, but that fell through when he wrapped his scenes early, and so he invited me instead to his parents' home in Belgium, only to go missing in action for 24 hours in the middle of negotiations. None of this is too surprising; after all, this is the self-sabotaging prima donna action star who rose in the 80s and ignominiously nose-dived in the 90s, having burned all his bridges in Hollywood.
And then, as I'm beginning to give up hope, he calls. "I just finished two movies back-to-back," he says apologetically. "When you finish a film, if you believed in your character,...

He's a weapon…. And he shoots where he's pointed!
So says the man Jean-Claude Van Damme in this trailer for "Assassination Games," his newest action thriller killer. Van Damme was last seen -- or heard -- in "Kung Fu Panda 2" as a crocodile, but his more recent films sound like outtakes from his meta-action pic "Jcvd," which tweaked the actor's waning career.
"Universal Soldier: Regeneration" went directly to DVD, and "The Eagle Path," which he wrote and directed, is headed there this October. However, things are looking up for Van Damme, at least when it comes to theatrical distribution.
"Assassination Games," previously known simply as "Weapon," is the first collaboration with Van Damme and director Ernie Barbarash, whose resume includes two episodes of the TV show "Rock the House" and the Cuba Gooding Jr./Val Kilmer vehicle "Hardwired." In "Games," Van Damme stars with muscle-bound martial arts dude Scott Adkins as,...

Jean-Claude Van Damme seems to be busier now than ever. While currently filming the newest and in 3D Universal Soldier: A New Dimension, he has The Eagle Path (which he directed) coming to Blu-ray in October, Weapon that co-stars Scott Adkins that was just picked up by Sony Pictures, Kung Fu Panda 2 is still in theaters, and the upcoming The Expendables 2.
Variety is reporting Jcvd has just signed on for Six Bullets, a new gritty action film which will have him reunite with his Weapon director Ernie Barbarash. The source describes the film: “Van Damme will play an ex-mercenary kidnapping expert hired by a martial arts fighter whose daughter has gone missing.”
The film will have a budget of $10 million. Sounds kick-ass to me. Thoughts?

He kicked his way back from the career doldrums with 2008’s self-spoofing effort Jcvd, but since then Jean-Claude Van Damme hasn’t exactly capitalised on it, pumping out yet another entry in the increasingly irrelevant Universal Soldier franchise and writing/directing/producing/editing/starring in little-seen action pic The Eagle Path, which was filmed three years ago but will only finally limp direct-to-dvd this October. He’ll no doubt be hoping for better things from Six Bullets, which he’s just agreed to star in.Ernie Barbarash, who recently worked with Van Damme on Assassination Games, is stepping behind the camera once more for the tale of a former mercenary kidnapping expert who is hired by a top martial arts champ to find his missing daughter. Shades of Taken, then, and the sort of plot that makes us wonder why the fist-jabbing fighter doesn’t strike out on his own to find his sprog.

It’s been a year or so since I’ve heard anything regarding Jcvd’s directorial effort “The Eagle Path”, a film in which our hero portrays a man who is “haunted by his past”. Of course, the plot is probably nothing more than a framework for plenty of non-stop action, so I’m not overwhelmingly concerned about the story’s specifics. As long as Van Damme looks like he actually gives a crap about the picture in question, I’ll be a happy camper. I’m not that hard to please, especially when it comes to the cinema of Jean-Claude Van Damme. If, like me, you’ve been curious to know when “The Eagle Path” will see the light of day, your wait is finally over. The aforementioned action flick is currently scheduled to hit DVD on October 3rd courtesy of Revolver Entertainment. However, that’s about all the...

Shortly after he completed Universal Soldier: Regeneration, Jean-Claude Van Damme directed a crime drama called The Eagle Path, that was once to play at Cannes and hopefully be bought. It didn’t and has been just laying around for a year or so, as Jcvd has moved onto other projects since. But in an early retailer announcement, Revolver Entertainment has announced that they’re releasing The Eagle Path straight-to-video on Blu-ray and DVD on October 3rd. No extras, cover art, region coding, or specs has been released yet.
The film follows Frenchy, played by Van Damme, who’s haunted by his past, while he heads dangerously into vengeance. More on this soon, and check out the trailer below:

It's time for the second feature written, directed, and starring the Muscles from Brussels Jean-Claude Van Damme. First we had The Quest, a story he whipped up with the help of Frank Dux (the man Bloodsport was based on). Now there's The Eagle Path. There are some really good Jean-Claude Van Damme films. No, there are. Hard Target. Universal Soldier. Kim Newman likes Sudden Death. Earlier this year, the muscles from Brussels had a bit of a critical renaissance. And now here’s the trailer for The Eagle Path, like Jcvd never happened. If it undoes that sterling work however, Jc only has himself to blame, since The Eagle Path is Van Damme’s second directorial outing. Or, as Wikipedia currently has it, “Jean Claude is the Director an Writer of the mvoie an he also Director of the movie called the Quest that with he star in that movie in 1996”. Jc is also credited as editor, with his father Eugene producing, and children Kristopher and Bianca co-starring. The cleverest thing about the trailer is the way it mirrors the trajectory of most Jc movies, in that it’s quite boring for the first two thirds,...

Instead of going to the Cannes Film Festival with "The Expendables," Jean-Claude Van Damme will instead be trying to sell his "The Eagle Path" thriller. The movie was previously called "Full Love" and we now have a trailer for it. Check it out below. Plot: A military veteran and former mercenary, Frenchy (Van Damme) works as a taxi driver, hiding somewhere in East Asia, haunted by his past. In the midst of the chaotic Asian traffic Frenchy picks up a beautiful female passenger who will change him forever. Driven by dark memories of his childhood, he becomes determined to improve her life and, without her approval, he embarks on a journey which proves to be more dangerous and complicated then he expected. "Eagle Path" is actually directed by Van Damme, who previously helmed "The Quest" back in 1996 also starring himself. Trailer: If you cannot see the player, click here.

Just one movie can turn a whole career around. For Jean Claude Van Damme, that was Jcvd. The movie proved (at long last) that the notoriously self-aggrandizing actor had a sense of humor. Folks that hadn't paid attention to the guy in a decade were suddenly big fans. Who needs The Expendables when you can rope your own persona into a failed bank robbery and subsequent media circus? Now Van Damme is hard at work on a more tranditional new film called The Eagle Path, and Twitch has a new promo. The film is much more in the line of late '80s / early '90s action flicks. You can use the term 'standard' or 'classic' depending on your point of view. Picture a lower-budget version of Taken starring Jcvd. Which is a long way of saying that from here, this looks like a fall back to the Dtv pictures...

We've got some other trailers featuring Robin Williams and John Travolta, Jean Claude Van Damme, and Rachel McAdams, movies about pretty serial killers, Charles Darwin, dysfunctional families, and falling for Zooey Deschanel. And then there's the trailer for Martin Scorese's Shutter Island, which doesn't really look like a Scorsese picture.

Rachel McAdams is The Time Traveler's Wife

His career revived by a performance as a version of himself in Jcvd, Jean Claude Van Damme has moved on to The Eagle Path, a film he wrote and directed. It's his first time behind the camera since the poorly received The Quest back in 1996.
I guess there's a certain disappointment when you learn that this is more like a 90s relic than something building on a newfound respect Van Damme has gained in some ciricles. Jcvd plays a formery mercenary named Frenchy (ugh...) who works as a taxi driver in southeast Asia. He picks up a beautiful but mysterious passenger, and then the synopsis stops making sense to me.
Frenchy is haunted by memories from his childhood and somehow the only way to move both of these story elements forward is a hail of gunfire involving our hero and lots of his old military buddies.

While Jean-Claude Van Damme's next film The Eagle Path [1] looks like it may simply end up relegating him back to the bargain bin, the Muscles from Brussels hasn't stopped trying to expand his acting repertoire. According to Jcvd himself, he's got a few more tricks up his sleeve, and if all goes well, he may soon be making the jump to the horror genre for the first time in his career. "This summer I will make a new movie with a famous director called Weapon. After that I will make a horror movie called The Breed. Its a great story, great script with true emotion. I want to show the fans I am transferable. I wanted to make a horror movie a few years back but the script was weak and had no direction. Breed is different, it’s set in a village where strange things happen… You know what?...

I have a hard time believing that Jean-Claude Van Damme and Vinnie Jones are the world’s best assassins who just happens to be rivals. As movie-o-matic plots are wont to go, they of course are forced to form an unlikely alliance in order to accomplish the same goal: in this case, kill some guy who is working with the DEA. Stupid DEA, always going around working with bad people. When will they learn? Anyhoo. The movie will be called “Weapon”, and will be directed by Russell Mulcahy of “Highlander” fame. THR says Jones’ character (Variety has him listed as Derek Chase) will be a master sharpshooter, while Van Damme’s Jack Conway will be skilled with a knife. What, no elaborate kicking M.O. for Van Damme? Blasphemy! Alison Semenza and Todd Moyer will produce the film for their Flagship Films. Van Damme is currently working on a string of projects,...

Oh Jean-Claude Van Damme. Jcvd was a once in a lifetime opportunity for you, and I'm afraid you're screwing it in the ass. Everything you've heard about Jcvd is true (review here). A good and interesting film highlighted by an extraordinary performance from Van Damme. Funny, reflective, emotionally exposed, and self aware... he surprises with talent from beginning to end. The response to the film was his golden ticket out of direct to DVD hell and into Pawtucket Pat's Patriot Brewery. ( Too obscure?) Well, ticket back to the big screen anyway. Sylvester Stallone offered him a role in his upcoming action extravaganza The Expendables, but Van Damme turned him down over character issues. Instead, Van Damme decided to direct and star in his own film called The Eagle Path. Check out the following trailer and summation (both courtesy of Twitch). A military veteran and former mercenary, Frenchy works as a taxi driver, hiding...

Jean-Claude Van Damme writes, directs, and stars in the new movie “The Eagle Path”, formerly known as “Full Love”, but since that didn’t sound Jean-Claude Van Damme-y enough, they changed the title. “The Eagle Path” still doesn’t sound all that Jean-Claude Van Damme-esque, but I suppose it’s better than “Full Love”. I mean, come on, “Full Love”? Anyways, the trailer for the movie has appeared online. If nothing else, the sight of Van Damme shooting a dude in the head and blood flowing freely out of it like some geyser should put the film on your must-see list. If not that, then how about Van Damme’s best friend, a wheelchair bound dude shotgunning people? A military veteran and former mercenary, Frenchy (Van Damme) works as a taxi driver, hiding somewhere in East Asia, haunted by his past. After his driving shifts he often frequents the Eagle’s Nest,...

After the critical acclaim that Jean-Claude Van Damme received last year for his performance in Jcvd, things seemed to be looking up for the aging action star. He had been toiling away in direct to video hell for quite a while now, but a lot of people felt that movie would give him a new lease on life -- including himself, after all, he did turn down a role [1] in Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables. Instead, he was inspired to get back behind the camera for the first time since his 1996 film The Quest. Well, he probably should have left that to the professionals. The first trailer for Van Damme's The Eagle Path has now arrived online, and guess what? It looks like a Jean-Claude Van Damme film! The story has him playing "Frenchy", a former mercenary who now works as a taxi driver in East Asia. While frequenting a bar called The Eagle's Nest,...

Yes, the Twitch Video Player Top Ten arrives a couple of days early this week thanks to the fact that I’ll be spending the time when I normally put this thing together on a plane. British splatter and Jean Claude Van Damme are the top new titles this week but neither proved strong enough to knock Indonesian martial arts picture Merantau out of the top spot.

And with this first trailer for Jcvd's upcoming directorial effort The Eagle Path (formerly Full Love), we see that the aging actor retained little from the story of his own life, Jcvd. Still intent on playing the tired old cliche of the ex-military man turned bodyguard who must protect the woman he loves, Van Damme is back to his old tricks again and Eagle Path looks like so many of his other straight to DVD films.
If you really think about it, this film is fairly similar to the Transporter series but, for me anyway, it looks to deliver neither the thrills or the laughs. Of course, as an admirer of the man and his career, I sincerely hope I'm wrong and that Eagle Path will stand as a milestone in Jcvd's careers.

What do you do if you’re an aging action star, written off by most thanks to years of straight-to-video obscurity who suddenly vaults back to attention thanks to what is By Far the the most acclaimed film and performance of your career? If you’re Jean Claude Van Damme - fresh off of Jcvd - you turn your back on the system that locked you into video hell in the first place, found your own company and direct your own film. That film is The Eagle Path and the trailer is here.

After his driving shifts he often frequents the Eagle’s Nest, a seedy bar that houses a caged eagle. In the midst of the chaotic Asian traffic Frenchy picks up a beautiful female passenger who will change him forever.

And the rebirth of Jean Claude Van Damme continues ... Riding the success of Jcvd - a film which we absolutely love around these parts - Van Damme has been hard at work on his directorial effort The Eagle Path, a film that is drawing solid early buzz, and now word is beginning to get out about his next feature after that. Currently running under the title The Pit Bull, Van Damme recently spilled a huge number of details about the project in a conversation with Impact Magazine‘s Mike Leeder. Our thanks to Leeder for allowing us to reprint the relevant portion here. Check it below the break!

Hi Todd, I thought you and everybody at Twitch might be interested in hearing a bit more about Jean-Claude Van Damme’s 2nd directorial outing “The Eagle Path”, formerly known as “Full Love’.
I had the great pleasure of watching the first cut of the movie recently, with Jean-Claude in Hong Kong literally a day or so after he completed editing. I’d previously visited the set in Thailand and been shown several scenes during editing, but this was the first time he screened the full cut of the movie to anyone.
The plot has already been discussed in a couple of newspieces, and as for the title change, “The Eagle Path” title is very relevant when you see the movie. The movie looks very big, with cinematography by Doug Milsome who shot “Full Metal Jacket’, and some great camerawork from Ross Clarkson. The film has a very good ‘visual...

To follow up the critical success of Jcvd - one of my personal favorites from the past year - Jean Claude Van Damme has been hard at work on his directorial effort Full Love. We brought you the first stills from the film all the way back in October and with word that the film has completed editing and undergone a name change - it is now known as The Eagle Path - a new block of stills have appeared online.

With J.C.V.D. charming audiences everywhere and making the unlucky of us foam at the mouth to see it, the big question has become: Would this be the start of a great career twist, or a charming, but fleeting, aberration for Jean Claude Van Damme? Rather than taking it step by step, the dude has jumped head first into the deep end -- next up will be Van Damme's labor of love, Full Love, which he wrote, produced, directed, and stars in. It's supposed to be a personal story, but is currently all hush-hush. But now we've at least got a peek inside, courtesy of Twitch. They've posted five images from the film, including the thumbnail to the right. It doesn't show much, but one thing that's definitely not there -- Jcvd splits.

This might be the weekend that Jean Claude Van Damme truly makes a comeback. We ran the official trailer for Jcvd over the weekend, which has garnered an enthusiastic response, and now we've got some photos of Jcvd in yet another film. Full Love is Van Damme's latest project that he wrote, directed, and is starring in along with his two children, Kristopher and Bianca Van Varenberg. Apparently there isn't an official plot available, but it's described as "based on a true story, based in another reality" and "about love, friendship, and dedication." Thanks to Twitch, we've got our first look at Van Damme in the film. There are a few more photos that can be found over on Twitch. I've featured the best of the batch below for your viewing pleasure. Does this look like it could potentially be an interesting feature film? I don't want to start making...

In his quest to reinvent himself can Jean Claude Van Damme go two for two? With the Us theatrical release of the stellar Jcvd drawing near - and while it’s nice to be quoted in the new Us trailer it would’ve been even nicer if they’d gotten our URL correct - we now move our attention to Full Love, the new project Van Damme wrote, produced, directed and stars in.
Very little is known about Full Love at the moment other than that it was shot in Thailand and is a very personal project for the man behind it, so personal that two of his children - Kristopher and Bianca Van Varenberg - both have roles in it. As for Van Damme himself, he describes it as being “based on a true story, based in another reality”, which is as confusing as it is intriguing. Beyond that...
