Comer plays a young woman whose baby arrives just as environmental crisis begins to break the society around her
Here is a post-apocalyptic drama of survival, a fiercely acted and unnerving real-time demonstration of law and order breaking down. It is all the more disturbing, credible and immediate in that, unlike other examples of genre, the narrative isn’t heading for an abyss of unknowable chaos. Rather, it envisions society’s grim normalisation of disaster and loss, an evolutionary leap downwards but one in which a kind of rebirth is not ruled out.
In contrast to the American post-apocalypse of John Hillcoat’s The Road, or the European apocalypse of Michael Haneke’s Time of the Wolf, this film is a very British world-ending – because the populace are unarmed, or mostly. First-time director Mahalia Belo and screenwriter Alice Birch (who has adapted the novel by Megan Hunter) may have taken...

A history of the most underrated British science fiction of the 1970s is, largely, just a history of British science fiction of the 1970s. It gets a bad rap. Think “1970s British Sci-Fi” and your mind will be flooded with associations of dodgy special effects, less-than-perfect gender politics, and so much knitwear. That, and a certain time traveller with a predilection for scarves and jelly babies.
But the truth is the 70s was a golden age for British science fiction stories with ideas and ambition, completely unrestrained by any concept of production values. While even the most pedestrian attempt at modern science fiction telly feels it has to go toe to toe with the MCU’s latest CGI eyeball-blaster, a year after Star Wars was on our screens the Doctor was still routinely facing off against dressed like this, and it was better for it.

Jonna Mannion became the second contestant eliminated from “The Challenge: USA” on Sunday night, following her loss to Tori Deal in the arena. In the game “Drop the Ball,” each woman was tasked with scoring as many goals as possible with balls dropped from a large structure. If necessary, they could tackle, push, shove and do anything necessary to secure a ball for themselves. In the end, Tori pulled off the win, defeating Jonna by a score of 29-15. Watch our exclusive video interview with the eliminated contestant above.
As an “MTV: The Challenge” veteran and two-time champion, Jonna knew walking into the game “the target was big.” She explains, “Not only was the target big because of the back-to-back wins, then they’re like, ‘Hey guys, we’re going to make you guys ride up on jet skis,’ and then the first-round draft pick. Reality TV star Amber Borzotra previously competed on Big Brother, the same franchise as several other competitors who also joined The Challenge. They have teamed up and expanded into the Vacation Alliance but seemingly refuse to work with her. She recently opened up about being excluded from the group, calling it “weird.”
Amber Borzotra hasn’t become a part of the ‘Big Brother’ alliance
Big Brother alums Kaycee Clark, Faysal “Fessy” Shafaat, Josh Martinez, Bayleigh Dayton, and Chris “Swaggy C” Williams joined MTV’s The Challenge in season 35’s Total Madness.
Additionally, all of them, except for Josh, who won season 19, competed in season 20, with Kaycee walking away with the victory. Therefore, they were familiar with each other and instantly teamed up until Kaycee sided with Nany González over Bayleigh, resulting in a massive blowout.
Love Islanders, Survivors, and Big Brother roomies from all over the world ? are joining the fray this season!

It's only been three months since it was officially announced that "Scream" would reach the six movies franchise club, with "Scream 6" getting the green light to both scare us and make us laugh yet again. Though the previous film in the franchise, awkwardly titled just "Scream," didn't really tease any future plans or ideas, this is "Scream," and the franchise that needs no other excuse than just some nutjob deciding to try and become famous by killing people to justify another entry.
And that is exactly what is happening, with the production wheels on "Scream 6" moving along nicely. Paramount just announced some returning cast for the upcoming new film. We also...

Artists and filmmakers Anna Fitch (“Survivors”) and Banker White (“Sierra Leone’s Refugee All-Stars”) are preparing a multidisciplinary documentary project that they’re pitching this week at the Hot Docs Forum, describing it as a testament to the enduring power of friendship and what we learn from each other in life and after death.
“Heaven Through the Back Door” explores the mystery of death through the unconventional friendship of Fitch and Yolanda Shea – affectionately dubbed “Yo” – two kindred spirits born 49 years apart. Directed by Fitch and White, the film is produced by Heidi Fleisher (“Wake Up on Mars”) and Sara Dosa (“Fire of Love”) for Mirabel Pictures.
The film is a deeply personal and emotional tribute to Shea, who was born in Chiasso, Switzerland in 1924 and crisscrossed the globe before settling in California. Fitch described her as “many things to many people: a great-grandmother, career weed dealer, intellectual, psychic, hostess,...

Will Shameless go out with a whimper?
If Shameless Season 11 Episode 9 is any indication, then yes.
While "Survivors" started moving some of the plots along toward a conclusion, there was too much filler that made it difficult to care about any of the events.
Did we really need to follow V's mother to Kentucky? Carol has never been a big part of the series, disappearing shortly after realizing she wanted to keep the kid she was supposed to birth for her daughter.
The series desperately tries to make us believe that V fell out of her mother's life shortly after that, but we need to remember that V is raising two children of her own while simultaneously running a bar.
Carol's comments about no one visiting her were a bit rude when you consider that she could have called V or even went into the bar for a coffee and a catchup.

Set in the very near future where scientists have discovered a method of matching people with their perfect romantic fit using DNA, eight-part Netflix Original The One is technically a sci-fi drama. Really though, it’s a crime thriller revolving around the murky circumstances in which the cash cow company behind the matching service was created. Written by Misfits and Crazyhead creator Howard Overman, The One is based on the 2017 novel of the same name by John Marrs. It’s a cat-and-mouse game between wealthy, driven CEO Rebecca (Hannah Ware) and police detective Kate (Zoë Tapper).

Based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning article by ProPublica and the Marshall project, and an episode of the podcast This American Life, limited series Unbelievable follows the true story of a group of sexual assault survivors and the two detectives (Merrit Wever and Toni Collette) who track down their attacker. Danielle Macdonald’s portrayal of key witness Amber Stevenson expertly conveys the unexpected aspects of trauma response, in that many people dissociate and are apparently fine instead of breaking down. Deciding to play Amber as smiling and ‘pulled-together’ post-assault, Macdonald leaned into a powerful desire to give a realistic voice to those survivors whose stories are so often disbelieved.
Deadline: What made you really want this role?
Danielle MacDonald: When it first came to me through my agents, I hadn’t heard about this case at all. So, the first thing I did was read the ProPublica article and then listened to the podcast.

In the annals of Doctor Who, there are no enemies more recognizable than the almost indestructible Daleks. Their battle cry of “Exterminate!” as they doggedly continue their mission to conquer the universe and obliterate races they perceive as inferior, has echoed throughout the decades of the British institution. Despite their fundamental presence though, prior to the show being revived from its indefinite hiatus in 2005, they very nearly were not featured at all.
The Daleks were dreamed up by Welsh writer Terry Nation, who went on to create the iconic ‘70s series Blake’s 7 and Survivors and died from emphysema in 1997 at the age of 66. They debuted in Doctor Who’s second serial in 1963, less than 20 years after the end of the Second World War whose horrors had yet to fade, with the intent being for them to be analogous to Nazis. On Wednesday, Los Angeles-based talent manager Dan Spilo became the first-ever “Survivor” player to be ejected from the show, following an unspecified “off-camera” incident.
Host Jeff Probst announced Spilo’s exit near the end of Wednesday’s episode, after contestant Elaine Stott was eliminated. “Alright, so, need to share some news,” Probst said. “So I just spoke privately with Dan and I want to update you guys. A decision has been made and Dan will not be returning to the game. He will not be coming back to camp. He won’t be on the jury. He’s gone.”

Czech filmmaker Vojtech Jasny, director of “All My Good Countrymen,” which won the best director prize at Cannes in 1969, has died. He was 93.
According to the Associated Press, Slovacke divadlo, a theatre he frequently visited, said that Jasny died Friday, and a family representative confirmed his death to the Ctk news agency.
Jasny was a prolific part of the Czechoslovakian new wave in the ’50s and ’60s, though he left the country following its invasion by the Ussr in 1968. He directed several films while living in other European countries, and eventually relocated to Brooklyn, New York in the ’80s.
Though it received critical acclaim, “All My Good Countrymen” was banned in Jasny’s home country following the invasion due to its depiction of the brutal effect of Ussr communism on the Czech people.
Jasny was also presented with the Cannes Special Jury Prize in 1963 for “The Cassandra Cat.”

In this week’s International TV Newswire: the logic of an Mediapro Ipo; Tve’s ‘Monteperdido’s’ renewed.
Mediapro Ipo: Don’T Hold Your Breath
The big TV news from Spain this week, at least according to financial newspaper “El Confidencial,” is that Mediapro, the Barcelona based multinational is preparing to seek an initial stock market listing. Potential investors should not hold their breath. It looks very unlikely to happen this year. Given that, the value sought by Mediapro, according to El Confidencial, of €3 billion ($3.3 billion) seems pure speculation. There is a logic, however, to a mid-term stock market float, as one of the ways to finance further growth at Mediapro as it drives ever more into high-end drama series production without abandoning its past core business of sports right brokering and services. Mediapro’s chief executives Jaume Roures and Taxto Benet have never discounted the move, even after Chinese...

Many consider Richard Hatch, the show’s first-ever winner, to be the best of the best even 19 years later. Richard’s way of playing the game in “Borneo” — from creating alliances to being boastful about eliminating people — helped shape the reality TV villain of today.

The Alliance, the new partnership formed by leading European pubcasters to counter the growing power of Netflix and other players, is revving up with two new international dramas, “Around the World in 80 Days” and “Mirage.”
The Alliance was formed last year by France Televisions, Germany’s Zdf and Italy’s Rai. The partners unveiled their two new ambitious shows Wednesday at Series Mania in Lille, France.
For France Televisions in particular, the series are part of a wider move into high-end international drama that also includes French series like “Germinal,” based on Emile Zola’s classic novel, and the adaptation of Guillaume Musso’s bestseller, “La jeune fille et la nuit,” both of which France Televisions is developing outside of the Alliance.

Lin Bolen, the first female VP of programming at a TV network and an influential force in daytime television fare, has died. She passed away on January 19 in a hospital in the San Fernando Valley, according to friend and former game-show host Jim MacKrell. She was 76.
Bolen worked for NBC in the 1970s and was responsible for commissioning the long-running game show Wheel of Fortune. She also is credited with bringing long-form narrative to soap operas, expanding them to hour-long formats.
It was long rumored that the ruthless Faye Dunaway character of Diana Christiansen in the 1976 satirical film Network was based on Bolen, something Bolen denied.
She was appointed VP of daytime programming at NBC in 1972, rising to become the VP of programming in Sept. 1975. NBC thrived under her leadership, becoming the No. 1 network in ratings.

Claire Danes has a new “Homeland” underling — and she’ll probably want to keep an eye on this one. The Showtime drama just locked recurring “Suits” actor Max Beesley for one episode. He’ll play Mike Brown, an ex-Royal Marine turned private military contractor. Brown is described as smart, but he is not entirely comfortable working under Carrie Mathison (Danes). Beesley is best known for a variety of roles on British TV including “Hotel Babylon,” “Mad Dogs,” “Ordinary Lies” and “Survivors.” Film-wise, he was a co-lead with Mariah Carey in “Glitter,” and could also be seen in “The Emperor’s Wife” and “Pawn.

Paterson Joseph chats to us about Good Omens, Peep Show, being cut from Paddington, and why he'd "never say never" to playing the Doctor...
Where do you begin with Paterson Joseph? Be it on stage or the small screen, he’s popped up everywhere from Shakespeare to Survivors, from Casualty to Green Wing. To some, he’s the suave, sharply dressed and, latterly, lapsed alcoholic Alan Johnson in Peep Show. But to others, this writer included, he’ll always be the mysterious, flamboyant swashbuckler, the Marquis de Carabas, from Neil Gaiman’s rich sub-London fantasy Neverwhere.
Now, he’s appearing on BBC Radio 4 in a festive double bill of prestige productions. First, he’s giving voice to fast-food mogul and horseman of the apocalypse Famine in Good Omens, adapted from the novel by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. Then, on New Year’s Day, he’s Pierre, the passionate protagonist...

As Guillermo del Toro’s The Strain comes to the UK, we look back at how TV’s virus thrillers have mutated over the decades…
It was much so simpler when they’d just kill you. Once upon a time, viruses in TV dramas were straightforward slaughterers. The flu of 1975’s Survivors, for instance, cut a swathe through the UK, leaving well-spoken corpses wherever it went. Once infected, you’d cough, start sweating, and then drop dead - unless you numbered amongst the lucky immune, in which case it was time to brush up on your scouting badge survival skills and attempt to make your way in a post-plague world.
Nowadays, TV’s infected aren’t given anything like such an easy time of it. After the coughing, sweating, lurching - and often, dying - stage, more often than not, the virus transforms you. You mutate into something monstrous, one...

Midsomer Murders is back on Acorn DVD with three all-new mysteries that debuted in the UK last year. If you haven’t been keeping up to speed with the long-running drama then you should know that these three stories feature Neil Dudgeon as John Barnaby rather than John Nettles as his cousin Tom. While the identity of the principal investigator has changed fairly recently, it seems like a long, long time since anyone other than Jason Hughes served as the top man’s sidekick. The good news is that Hughes does feature in the these three stories. The bad news is that this is the last you’ll see of him as he left the show in 2013.
Written in the Stars is the first mystery in Midsomer Murders Set 24. As the story begins, the whole community are giddy with excitement about an upcoming solar eclipse.

Inspector George Gently
The latest batch of George Gently episodes come to DVD on 1 April and you’d be a fool to miss out on this boxset. As you will recall, season five ended with Gently and Bacchus, shot and wounded on the floor of Durham Cathedral. Would they recover? Would they ever work again? Well given that there is a season six I don’t think you can accuse me of releasing a “spoiler” if I tell you that the duo made a full recovery. However, it wasn’t an easy road, especially for Bacchus whose wallowing in self-pity eventually led him down an unhealthy path of booze and gambling. Older and wiser, Gently realized that work was the best therapy and he quickly got back to doing what he does best — solving murders.
Even by George Gently‘s own standards, season six features a lot of introspection as...

A second series of new BBC Sunday night drama The Musketeers is on its way...
Good news. The Musketeers' combination of period intrigue, impressive swordplay, handsome troubled heroes and a guest star parade of established UK talent has earned it a second series.
Writer Adrian Hodges (Survivors, Primeval) made it clear from the outset that his take on Alexandre Dumas' seventeenth century characters was not an adaptation of the original novel but in keeping with its spirit. The series' poetic license with the Dumas quartet meant that a second, and why not, a third and fourth series were all possibilities. If the show can maintain the ratings success of its first three episodes, which, between them, averaged over six million viewers in the overnights, it can look ahead to a robust future on BBC One.

The show's well-edited trailers have promised big budget period action and drama imbued with a style and energy that should attract even those who may feel uninspired by yet another adaptation of Dumas’ classic. However, punchy trailers do not a good show make, so the question remains; does the BBC still have a problem?
In some ways, The Musketeers would seem like a safe choice. It’s material that has been endlessly copied, re-imagined and revamped and with such wide popularity there is already a high level of recognition and understanding. People sitting down to watch this show are going to know exactly what they’re going to get.
