- Tara Gregor is a seemingly perfect American suburban mother, married to a loyal and supportive husband, a landscape developer named Max, and two teenage children, the flamboyantly gay Marshall and the rebellious and headstrong Kate. The life-long, mentally unbalanced Tara suffers from Dissociative Personalty Disorder and has three other personalities which emerge at any given time which range from a flirtatious and spunky teenager named named 'T' and a gun-loving male alter-ego named Buck. Despite Tara's husband and kids, as well as Tara's younger sister, Charmaine, aware and supportive of her mental disorder, Tara finds it hard to keep up when she blacks out when her other personalities emerge without any warning, and they have knowledge of her personal problems especially when Buck emerges during Kate's ballet recital at her school and gets into a fight with her punk boyfriend Benjamin.—matt-282
- Tara Gregor is happily married to husband Max and has two great kids in the form of Kate and Marshall. She's a pretty good Mom and worries about what most Mom's do when you have two teenagers. There is one oddity however: Tara suffers from multiple personality disorder and presents several other distinct personalities. 'T' is something of a wild child and acts more like teenager Kate than a mature adult. Another is a male personality, named Buck, a redneck who wears construction boots and likes to go to the shooting range. The personalities are known to to the entire family and her husband of 17 years is accustomed to a different personality emerging at inopportune times. Her sister Charmaine, who had to deal with Tara while growing up, has never quite accommodated herself to her condition. Tara is always concerned when one of her other personalities emerges as she has no recollection of what they do.—garykmcd
- Open with a woman named Tara (Toni Collette) leaving a video message for herself "while I'm still lucid." Not only is Tara under a lot of stress as an interior decorator, but she's recently found her daughter Kate's prescription for morning-after pills. As she begins to break down, Tara turns off the camera and adds the tape to a large collection on a shelf. She strips off her clothes and walks down the hall.
Kate arrives home, hearing loud dance music coming from upstairs. She finds her mother dressed like a younger woman (low-cut jeans, thong, etc.), and ask why "T" is there rather than "Mom." Turns out Tara has Dissociative Identity Disorder and 'T' is one of her alters. 'T' tells Kate that Tara knows about the morning-after pills and the two head downstairs to shop with Tara's credit cards.
They find Kate's younger brother Marshall in the kitchen working on homework. Moments later Tara's husband Max (John Corbett) arrives home from work with a bucket of fried chicken. He immediately recognizes 'T,' who is acting the part of a 15-year-old girl trapped in a 40-year-old's body. Kate tells the family she has the lead in a recital at school just as Tara's sister Charmaine shows up to take her to a Pampered Chef party. Seeming annoyed that her sister "isn't home tonight," Charmaine asks Max to speak with her in the garage.
Through Charmaine's conversation with Max we learn that Charmaine isn't dealing with her sister's condition very well and doesn't believe DID is a real disease. Max has been married to Tara for 17 years and though angry "at the crazy," seems at peace with the situation.
'T' does her best to have sex with Max, who spurns her advances because Tara wouldn't approve. When 'T' keeps at it, Max sends her to the shed out back. Kate leaves, telling Max she's going to study with a friend. Max tells her he thinks the primary reason 'T' showed up is because Tara found the prescription. Marshall walks downstairs and turns on loud music so the neighbors won't be able to hear a potential "shit-fit" from 'T' in the shed.
After some time in the shed, we see Tara join Max in the shower. "Welcome back," he says.
Kate gets picked-up by her boyfriend, a pierced Goth-looking dude. In telling him about her mother's 'T' alter, we learn Kate is happy Tara is now off medication.
Tara goes into Marshall's room and asks how bad 'T' was. The son seems fine with the situation, telling Tara "because of you we get to be interesting." Though Tara's a little miffed Max made-out with 'T,' the couple seems fine and fools around.
Dropping off Kate's costume at school, Tara witnesses Kate's boyfriend pushing Kate outside the school. Tara and the boyfriend shout at one another as Kate grabs her costume and storms off. After briefly breaking down in her car, Tara's face turns strangely serious. Speeding away from the school, she reaches into her glove compartment for large glasses and a pack of Marlboro reds. Arriving home, Tara goes to her room and puts on a sleeveless flannel shirt, boots, dog tags and a trucker-style mesh hat.
With Tara still upstairs, Max arrives home to Marshall making muffins for Kate's recital. Marshall tells Max he thinks the "Buck" alter has arrived, just as Tara/Buck walks into the kitchen. Clearly an Uber-masculine male alter, Buck makes fun of Marshall for baking and grabs a beer out of the fridge. Max and Marshall convince Buck to attend Kate's recital rather than go to the gun range.
Despite the macho personality, it appears some part of Buck enjoys watching Kate's performance. Buck spots Kate's boyfriend in the crowd, giving him a throat-slash gesture. Noticing Buck is missing, we cut to outside the school where Buck is punching Kate's boyfriend in front of a crowd. The boyfriend eventually punches Buck, just as Max, Kate and Marshall arrive. Hearing from Buck that Kate had been roughed up, Marshall tackles the boyfriend and kicks him repeatedly.
The episode ends with the family bowling. Kate thanks Buck for attending the recital and defending her honor. Max tells Kate that "all us guys" have her back. Buck gives Marshall a bowling lesson as the credits roll.
