Since 1979, the TV academy has honored the field of animation by awarding the Best Animated Program Emmy on an annual basis. In its current form, this primetime category allows submissions targeted at audiences aged 13 and above, with series and specials made for younger viewers being relegated to the Children’s and Family Emmys. Since the creation of a separate short form category in 2008, submissions here have also been required to have runtimes in excess of 15 minutes.
The 2022 Best Animated Program ballot list below consists of 42 entries. Per category rules, all are either one-off specials or single episodes of continuing series. Seeking their dozenth victory and first since 2019 is the team behind “The Simpsons,” who just wrapped their 33rd season. Other shows hoping for repeat wins this year include “Archer,” “Bob’s Burgers,” “Rick and Morty,” and “South Park.”

Controversy instantly struck the moment the trailer for Santa Inc. was released. Oddly, the film hasn’t received many critical reviews; however, over 1000 plus audience members on rotten tomatoes have bombarded the site by giving the eight-part mini-series bad reviews; This has resulted in an extremely low 4% score from the audience. So why is Santa Inc. being trashed so harshly? It’s because of the film’s clear feminist political message. There’s no subtlety behind it either, where it’s clear that the animated series is depicting white men as evil for holding onto the Santa position. A quick note: The reason

The Rankin/Bass stop-motion Christmas specials, dating back to 1964’s Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, are sufficiently ingrained in holiday traditions that whole generations have grown up either blindly accepting or joyfully ignoring how messed up and limitedly for-children many of them actually are.
From Jack Frost to Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey to The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus, the specials are loaded with traumatizing deaths, thinly veiled drug trips and whatever the heck Heat Miser and Snow Miser were supposed to be.
So when some more parochial audiences take umbrage at Santa Inc., HBO Max’s adult-targeted homage to those Rankin-Bass specials ...

The War on Christmas* is starting early this year, folks! Giant letters blasting "From the Creators of 'Sausage Party'" cover the screen, as if Santa dropping F-bombs and elves flashing green tiddies wasn't enough of a giveaway that this is not your typical Christmas show. HBO Max recently released the trailer for their raunchy new stop-motion holiday series, "Santa Inc." starring Seth Rogen as the big man himself, and Sarah Silverman as an elf named Candy Smalls with big dreams of becoming the first woman Santa Claus.

When you hear Seth Rogen’s unmistakable laugh, you probably wouldn’t necessarily find the similarities between the actor and Santa Claus. The former has more of a stoner-y giggle, while Santa is known for his more bass-y “ho, ho, ho.” Well, despite this difference, it appears Seth Rogen is getting the chance to embody the Christmas legend in the new HBO Max series, “Santa Inc.”

The trailer features each of the roommates tackling their goals, with the help of family and friends along the way. “I think you are such a beautiful person that you shouldn’t have to hide who you are,” says their aide Mandy (Sosie Bacon) to Jack. “That makes me want to throw up,” he responds.

After a competitive bidding war that received multiple offers, Gabrielle Union’s I’ll Have Another Productions has sold a queer teen comedy feature, with the working title “To Be Real,” to Amazon Studios. Tony winner, current Emmy nominee and recent Emmy winner Billy Porter — who’s been shooting his feature directorial debut “What If?” for Orion Pictures this summer — is attached to direct an original script by Ryan Shiraki, as sold from a pitch. Shiraki, a prolific TV director (“On My Block”) is also an executive producer on the upcoming HBO Max animated series “Santa Inc.,” starring and executive produced by Seth Rogen and Sarah Silverman, and created by Alexandra Rushfield.

In their first public appearance since WarnerMedia merged the two development divisions this past April, execs from HBO Max and Adult Swim previewed their upcoming slates, releasing new footage from adult-skewing offerings “10-Year-Old-Tom” and “Smiling Friends,” while talking up several more.
Created by Michael Cusack (“Yolo: Crystal Fantasy”) and Zack Hadel (of the popular YouTube channel “psychicpebbles”), “Smiling Friends” picks up where the viral 2020 short left off, following the lives of two hapless cheer merchants sent to make their clients smile. Mixing 2D, primitive character designs with candy colors and the winking edge of an online forum, the series is due out later this year.
“[Though they’re both well known independently,] combined, Hadel and Cusack are doing something really special,” said Walter Newman, senior VP comedy development at Adult Swim. “From the character designs to the voice work, it represents a lot of what we’re trying to accomplish here.”

Platonic will star Rogen and Byrne as a pair of former best friends who met in their youth and reconnect as adults, hoping to mend the rift that led to their falling out. But as their friendship becomes more consuming, it destabilizes their lives and causes them to reevaluate their choices.

Netflix is hoping for a slam dunk with “Hoops,” the streaming service’s upcoming animated basketball comedy. Netflix has unveiled a teaser trailer for the show, which will premiere its first season August 21.
Per Netflix, “Hoops” is an animated comedy sitcom that centers on a hot-headed, foul-mouthed high school basketball coach (Jake Johnson) who thinks turning around his god-awful team will take him to the “big leagues” and turn his miserable life around.
Speaking of having a foul-mouth, Netflix’s teaser trailer for the series indicates that “Hoops” is clearly part of the entertainment industry’s newfound fondness for adult animated comedies — “fuck” is the trailer’s most-used word by a considerable margin. And if the one-minute teaser is any indication, “Hoops” is shaping up to be a legitimately funny affair; the video consists entirely of Johnson’s hapless character attempting to land a shot while his incredulous team wordlessly watches from nearby.

It took over three years, but it’s finally happening: Adult animated comedy “Close Enough” is coming to HBO Max, and the streaming service dropped a trailer for the series on Thursday.
“Close Enough” which was originally expected to air on the WarnerMedia-owned TBS in 2017, will be making its way to the company’s new streaming service July 9.
Per HBO Max:
“Close Enough” is a surreal animated comedy about a married couple, their five-year-old daughter, and their two divorced best friends/roommates all living together on the east side of Los Angeles. They’re navigating that transitional time in your 30s when life is about growing up, but not growing old. It’s about juggling work, kids, and pursuing your dreams, while avoiding time-traveling snails, stripper clowns, and murderous mannequins. Their life may not be ideal but for now, it’s close enough.

HBO Max has ordered a new adult animated series titled “10-Year-Old-Tom.”
The series hails from writer and executive producer Steve Dildarian, with Nick Weidenfeld also attached as an executive producer.
“Not only is Steve insanely funny, he is one of the rare talents that can write, draw and do voices. He’s the triple threat that is the foundation of all great animated shows,” said Weidenfeld
In the series, Tom grapples with being corrupted by the grownups around him each day just by leaving his house. Bad influences seem to lurk around every corner — litigious parents, drug dealing bus drivers, and band teachers who want to sleep with his mom. If he sets up a lemonade stand, he gets sued for gross negligence. If he plays baseball, he is encouraged to “dabble with roids.” And if he visits the school nurse, he is introduced to the world of insurance fraud.

It’s the evolution of animation. It can be argued that “The Simpsons” opened the door for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, which in turn kicked down the door to let in shows including “Bojack Horseman,” “Archer” and “Rick & Morty.” U.S animators are serving up not only raunchy comedy but also sophisticated storytelling. Outside the U.S., animated features have a long history of telling difficult stories — most recently “The Swallows of Kabul” and “Funan” are two films that tackled horrific events. Animation aimed at adults is on the rise worldwide.
In his recently released white paper, “Adult Animation Finally Breaking Free of Its Comedy Shackles,” John Evershed, head of High Concentrate, which specializes in the packaging, development and sales of animated TV series and movies for adult audiences, notes that adult animated series have been driving ratings on both linear TV and SVODs for the past few years.
