Alfred Hitchcock is undoubtedly one of the most influential filmmakers that has ever lived and his films have made a mark on filmmakers today. He has an unusual yet affecting way of inducing suspense and intensity in his films and his works like Psycho, Rebecca, To Catch a Thief, Vertigo, North by Northwest, and The Birds are proof of that.
Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo is one of his most acclaimed films
The latter is one of Hitchcock’ most audacious films and actress Tippi Hedren was the lead of the film. The director is known for his rigorous process of bringing his vision to life and this proved to be an excruciating experience for Hedren as she got pecked at by real birds following a last-minute switch-up made by Hitchcock.

Veena Sud is no stranger to the tangled streaming rights game when it comes to distribution.
After her Quibi series folded, the filmmaker is now bringing her breakout horror hit “The Stranger” to Hulu with a new director’s cut. “Longlegs” actress and horror staple Maika Monroe plays a rideshare driver who goes through a twelve-hour fight for survival when she picks up Carl (Dane DeHaan), a passenger who becomes her worst nightmare. Avan Jogia co-stars in the former series which is now a feature film.
“The Stranger” began as a Quibi series, which meant that Sud co-owned the copyright to the work, as part of the Quibi business model. Sud is now able to “self-distribute” the footage, recut as a feature.

Elvis Presley‘s “Suspicious Minds” is the best song ever written about the concept of suspicion. It wasn’t the first time the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll tackled the subject. Elvis recorded a song that later became a hit by an artist whose singing voice was extremely similar to his own. The song in question was allegedly crafted by one of The Beatles’ producers.
Elvis Presley’s ‘Suspicion’ is ‘Suspicious Minds’ on its head
Covers were a huge part of the “All Shook Up” singer‘s catalog from the very beginning. His debut album is nothing but covers! It was only fair that other artists should take shots at recording Elvis originals. Terry Stafford was an Elvis soundalike who had one hit song. It was a cover of Elvis’ “Suspicion.”

There’s nothing IndieWire loves more than directors talking about their favorite movies. So, of course, we took notice when, in late 2023, Turner Classic Movies started looping in directors to share their favorites from TCM’s lineup each month: Steven Spielberg’s TCM picks kicked things off, then Martin Scorsese waxed rhapsodic about “Madonna of the Seven Moons,” and Guillermo del Toro gushed about the greatness of Alfred Hitchcock’s “Suspicion.”
Now Chris Columbus is sharing his own TCM picks, along with some especially insightful anecdotes. Watch the video above.
Columbus starts off sharing his love of “Singin’ in the Rain”: “An amazing, almost flawless movie. You can say that about very few movies. I showed ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ to my 16-month-old granddaughter who was absolutely absorbed in the musical numbers. Moreso than any Disney animated films. I go back to it once or twice a year.

Elvis Presley‘s “Viva Las Vegas” was one one of several songs by the same musical genius that the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll recorded. Bob Dylan had a lot to say about the songwriter in question in his most recent book. Dylan said the songwriter left the world of professional gambling after two of his fellow musicians gave him a wake-up call.
Elvis Presley’s ‘Viva Las Vegas’ was written by an artist who grew sick of songwriting
“Viva Las Vegas” was co-written by Mort Shuman and Doc Pomus. Pomus was known for writing Elvis’ “Kiss Me Quick,” “Little Sister,” “Surrender,” “Suspicion,” “(Marie’s the Name) His Latest Flame,” and “She’s Not You.” Dylan dedicated his 2022 book The Philosophy of Modern Song to Pomus.

When "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" first premiered on CBS in October 1955, the episodic half-hour anthology series immediately gained immense popularity. Hosted by Hitchcock himself, every episode opened with the director's silhouette and Charles Gounod's "Funeral March of a Marionette" playing in the background, which became a cultural landmark in itself. As Hitchcock believed that the show's half-hour format did not do justice to the intricate anthology tales of suspense and terror, the episodic duration was subsequently extended when the show was revamped and retitled to "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour," which ran from 1962 to 1965.
Per John McCarty and Brian Kelleher's "Alfred Hitchcock Presents: An Illustrated Guide to the Ten-year Television Career of the Master of Suspense," NBC (where the show ended up airing alternatively), after witnessing the success of Hitchcock's show, started planning a brand new mystery/suspense anthology that was set to run from 1957 through 1958. R.E.M.’s 11th studio album, Up, informally flagged the start of the third and final phase of the band’s career, following both their early I.R.S. years and their mainstream peak in the 1990s. Drummer Bill Berry departed the band after suffering a brain aneurysm while on tour in 1995, but the remaining members opted not to replace him, instead employing electronic drum programming throughout the majority of the album. And the timing, it seemed, was serendipitous, as the electronica movement was reaching its apotheosis.
Up subsequently marked the end of R.E.M.’s decade-long relationship with rock producer Scott Litt, replaced by Ray of Light knob-twirler Pat McCarthy and mixer Nigel Godrich, who produced Ok Computer. And yet, the album doesn’t immerse itself as vigorously in the genre as those two watershed releases. Sonically, tracks like the Eno-esque opener “Airportman” and the gently percolating “Suspicion...

Guillermo del Toro doesn’t hold back about his love for his favorite movies. If you’ve spent any time on his Twitter feed over the years, you’ve likely seen him praise Stanley Donen’s use of the color red throughout the late director’s body of work, and hail everything from William Wellman’s 1931 film “Other Men’s Women” to David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” from 2022. The man has wide-ranging taste, and a deep awareness of cinematic history that’s informed his own films.
Now he follows Turner Classic Movies advisors Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, and Paul Thomas Anderson in giving his own picks from TCM’s lineup, all titles that will be airing in October. Watch the video, exclusive to IndieWire, above.
First up, he picks one of the most sorely underrated titles from Alfred Hitchcock’s filmography, 1941’s “Suspicion,” airing on TCM at 2:00am...

R.E.M. are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their 11th studio album Up with a new remastered reissue, set for release on November 10th via Craft Recordings. It features a collection of bonus material including, but not limited to, an 11-song performance recorded at…the Party of Five set.
Party of Five was a pretty depressing late-1990s drama series that starred a Scream-era Neve Campbell, a pre-Lost Matthew Fox, and teen-superstar-in-the-making Jennifer Love Hewitt. It also gave R.E.M. their first appearance on a scripted TV show, which they filmed in 1999 at Los Angeles’ Palace Theatre in front of 175 fan club members. Their single at the time, the Up track “At My Most Beautiful,” was the one that made it into the Party of Five episode — but the members figured they’d use the studio to rehearse for their tour while they were at it.

Saltburn, the second film written and directed by Emerald Fennell — three years after Promising Young Woman, for which she won the best original screenplay Oscar — had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival’s Palm Theatre on Thursday evening. And the picture, which Amazon plans to put into limited theatrical release on Nov. 24, and then open wide on Dec. 1, certainly left people talking.
A pitch-black comedy packed with sex, violence and music, like Fennell’s first film, Saltburn, which is set in the first decade of this century, chronicles the efforts of one young Oxford student (Barry Keoghan, an Oscar nominee earlier this year for The Banshees of Inisherin) to ingratiate himself into the life of another (Euphoria’s Jacob Elordi). The latter invites the former to spend time with his extremely wealthy family — including his mother (Rosamund Pike), father (Richard E. Grant) and sister (Alison Oliver) — at their mansion,...

The world’s most valuable tech company saw sales and profit for the three months ended in June beat on the top and bottom line although revenue was sluggish, down 1% at $81.8 billion. Earnings of $1.26 per share beat the $1.19 anticipated.
Revenue from iPhones, which are half of Apple’s total business, was $39.7 billion — below expectations and off 2% from the year ago. June can be a weak iPhone quarter ahead the fall when Apple usually unveils its new model, in this case the iPhone 15. The June quarter is Apple’s fiscal third quarter.
But Services, the fast-growing division that houses Apple TV+ alongside a dozen other businesses — Apple Music, Apple Fitness, Apple Arcade, Apple Podcasts, Apple Books, Apple Cloud and the Apple App Store to name a few – saw sales of $21.2 billion, up more than 8% year-over year.

Four British citizens staying at the hotel swiftly become prime suspects and have their lives turned upside down as they fight to absolve themselves of suspicion.

Keshet International has closed deals with Dpg Media (Belgium), TV 2 (Denmark) and TV4 in Finland and Sweden for the hidden camera investigation “Undercover: Sexual Harassment – The Truth,” which debuted on Channel 4 in December.
Produced by Kalel Productions, the film sees investigative reporter Ellie Flynn revealing the true extent of sexual harassment towards women of all ages in the U.K. Accompanied by hidden crew members, she goes undercover, enduring countless harassment online and in real-life.
“These are stories that women tell one another in their friendship groups or on social media. I wanted to show that feeling,” Flynn tells Variety.
“Sometimes, when you try to explain how sexual harassment feels or the impact it has on you, people – and by people I think often men – just don’t get it. It was trying to highlight that, [saying]: ‘This is why we are scared.’ It can happen anytime you go out.

The Big Bang Theory is one of the most famous and iconic modern-day sitcoms.
Sprawling Twelve Seasons, the series followed a group of brainiac friends and their exploits in love, life, and the search for knowledge.
The show garnered ten Emmy awards, four of which went to lead actor Jim Parsons, yet the show never nabbed the Best Comedy award.
The series has also spawned a spinoff series, Young Sheldon. Another spinoff series is in the works at Max, but the plot is unknown at this time.
While the series creator, Chuck Lorre, has continuous success with sitcoms on CBS, what has the main cast done? Find out below!
John Ross Bowie - Barry Kripke
Barry Kripke, a rival of Sheldon's and an overall annoying character, was played brilliantly by John Ross Bowie.
During his extended guest stint on The Big Bang Theory, he starred in the sitcom Speechless, starring Minni Driver.

The film world premiered at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight and then played a raft of other festivals including Toronto and London. The Fespaco jury head, producer Dora Bouchoucha, praised the film’s pairing of a strong aesthetic with a politically tuned-in storyline. Tom Sizemore, the talented, but troubled, actor who brought a tough guy bravado to films like Heat, Natural Born Killers and Saving Private Ryan, has died at the age of 61, Rolling Stone confirmed.
The actor died Friday after his family made the decision to remove him from life support at a Los Angeles-based hospital.
“It is with great sadness and sorrow I have to announce that actor Thomas Edward Sizemore (‘Tom Sizemore’) aged 61 passed away peacefully in his sleep today at St Joseph’s Hospital Burbank,” his manager Charles Lago...

If you read our Gold Derby combined odds for Oscar Best Picture, you see that the race is over and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is about to be crowned at the Academy Awards on March 12. But the favorite doesn’t always win the horserace. Upsets happen. The longshot comes in. Jaws drop. Calculations go awry. Something that no one could see coming winds up coming in. Chaos reigns.
And we love it.
If there is anything we’ve learned, it’s that there are no guarantees. Films that the majority think should have won, don’t. That’s particularly true in hindsight. “Citizen Kane,” widely regarded as the finest film of the 20th century, lost. So did the film many consider to be Martin Scorsese’s best, “Raging Bull.” “Moonlight” beat “La La Land.” “Crash” upset “Brokeback Mountain.” “Shakespeare in Love” upended “Saving Private Ryan.” “Chariots of Fire” snared the trophy over “Reds.

It's the end of the line for the Foxes.
Apple TV+ has canceled The Mosquito Coast after two seasons, Deadline reports.
The series starred Justin Theroux (as Allie Fox), Melissa Georga (Margot), Logan Paul Polish (Dina), and Gabriel Bateman (Charlie).
The series got off the ground running in 2021 with a seven-episode order, but it was quickly renewed for a 10-episode second season.
It featured high-octane action as the family tried to escape the law at every turn.
Thankfully, the end of the second season gave some closure to fans who will not now see what happens next.
The plan was for the potential third season to "segue into the book itself, and the movie's search for a utopian community."
As a result, the first two seasons would have been a prologue.
Apple TV+ doesn't give viewership statistics, which isn't much of a surprise, so it's hard to tell how the...

Robert Zemeckis' 2000 film "What Lies Beneath" might be the most underrated in the celebrated filmmaker's oeuvre. Written by Clark Gregg, "What Lies Beneath" came after a series of hits from Zemeckis -- following 1994's awards darling "Forrest Gump" and 1997's "Contact" -- and was a massive change of pace for him. Eschewing flashy sci-fi stories and effects-based splashiness, "Beneath" was a Hitchcockian thriller about suspicion, atmosphere, and a potential haunting. It was the most adult film of Zemeckis' career to date.
In the film, Michelle Pfeiffer plays Claire, a cellist who lives in an idyllic lakeside home with her professor husband Norman (Harrison Ford). Claire has overheard her immediate neighbors, another married couple, arguing violently and has even witnessed the fear on the wife's face. When she goes missing, it seems that murder might be afoot ... and that she may be haunting Claire and Norman. Indeed, Claire holds a séance,...
