A comedy centered on two very different sisters, featuring a solid cast including Lizzy Caplan, Alison Brie, Martin Starr, Mark Webber, Melonie Diaz, Geoffrey Arend and Timothy Busfield, the Sundance rom-com "Save the Date" has been rather quiet since it premiered in Utah earlier this year. But IFC Films, releasing the picture later this fall, is finally bringing their campaign to life. Directed by Michael Mohan ("One Too Many Mornings") the first trailer for the film has arrived and it quotes our review from Sundance where we described it as an "endearing" picture that "other rom-coms should aspire to be." And indeed, it does look charming while still containing some emotional depth and smarts. Here's the long-form synopsis: After an ill-timed and very public marriage proposal, fiercely independent Sarah (Caplan) breaks up with her overeager boyfriend Kevin (Arend). Sarah turns to her sister Beth (Brie) for support, but...

With a cast that boasts buzzed about comedic actors.like Community's Alison Brie and Party Down's Lizzy Caplan and Martin Starr.as well as a unique perspective on the romantic comedy, Save the Date drew plenty of attention at this year's Sundance Film Festival, including a nod for the Grand Jury Prize in the drama category. Yet somehow the sophomore effort from writer-director Michael Mohan (One Too Many Mornings) did not score a distribution deal.until now. Variety reports that at long last IFC has purchased all North American rights to the unconventional romantic comedy that stars Brie and Caplan as two sisters whose misadventures in romance involve wedding planning, rock stars, and a mild-mannered marine biologist, making it the last major purchase out of Sundance. However the trade reveals it wasn't cold feet that kept IFC from closing the deal on Save the Date, it was the...

If there's one thing most romantic comedies can't seem to lock down it's real romance and substantial comedy. However, when it comes to the film festival circuit, plenty of films hit it right on the money. Whether it's (500) Days of Summer or even Garden State, Sundance is the place to find a real love story with heart and comedy. Save the Date easily fits into that category but with an even more grounded, even practical approach to love as a twenty-something. From the pressure of being engaged to the lead-up to a serious relationship, a lot can go wrong when it comes to romance. But thankfully, it can also go right. Director Michael Mohan (who previously came to Sundance with One Too Many Mornings and the short Ex-Sex) returns to the festival with this genuine, honest story that I wouldn't simply lump into the romantic comedy subgenre. To give it...

With so much going on, so much to see and hear and ogle, so many Paris Hilton sightings and free vodka sodas, it can be easy to forget the real purpose of the Sundance Film Festival: to showcase, and in many cases sell, quality independent films from young and ambitious filmmakers, many of whom are making the trek to the mountains for the first time.
But to earn a slot in competition, to really make an impression, filmmakers often need to secure some festival-friendly talent -- even before they secure funding -- and hope their film can break out of the pack. To do so, they often have to straddle a line between the personal and commercial, ensuring their films have a life beyond the the festival.
Luckily, many of these filmmakers have amassed networks and contacts that enable them to tell the story they want, while utilizing well-known performers...

Anyone familiar with great television comedies of the last decade should be familiar with the main cast of Save The Date. The film stars Lizzy Caplan (Party Down), Martin Starr (Party Down, Freaks and Geeks), Alison Brie (Community), Geoffrey Arend (Super Troopers), and Mark Webber (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World), and is one of two Lizzy Caplan films at this year's Sundance to feature a wedding theme - the other being Bachelorette. Despite the fantastic cast, I'm sad to say that this film didn't resonate with me.
The biggest problem with Save The Date is that I didn't feel like it added anything new to this type of story. We've seen it hashed and rehashed tons of times before - a young woman rejects her current life in favor of a spontaneous new relationship - and even this week, I've seen two variations on it with Hello I Must Be Going and The First Time.

"One Too Many Mornings" (Sundance 2010) director Michael Mohan is back to the festival in the Us Dramatic competition with his new film "Save the Date." What's it about? Modern love. Director Michael Mohan says: "The film looks at relationships in a very modern way. One thing our generation is dealing with is the fact that we know full well that 50% of our parents' marriages have ended in divorce. And as we enter into our own long term relationships, as wonderful as they may seem at the outset, there's this strange gray cloud hovering over us, reminding us that we might not make it. One of the reasons our generation is so independent is because of this - and that's great - but not if it comes at the expense of closing ourselves off. There's nothing that makes us more vulnerable than intimacy, but that's beautiful. And we can't be scared...

Michael Mohan (Sundance 2010, "One Too Many Mornings") and his wife have a very peculiar--one might even say psychic--connection with graphic novelist Jeffrey Brown ("Clumsy"). "So I wrote to our favorite graphic novelist, Jeffrey Brown, to see if he would draw something of my wife and I. ...

In the sea of sugary sweet rom-coms, how do you make your film stand out? A good place to start is by lining up a stellar cast from the young Hollywood set.
And that's exactly what Mike Mohan (who helmed the 2010 Sundance flick "One Too Many Mornings") is doing for his next project.
The up-and-coming writer/ director has just signed "Mad Men" starlet Alison Brie, as well as the brunette beauty Lizzy Caplan (whom you'll remember from her breakout role as the sassy Janis Ian in "Mean Girls") to star in his independent romantic comedy "Save the Date."
Brie and Caplan will play two sisters, the former one at peace with her life choices, the latter… well… not. Hilarity ensuies.
The duo joins an already sparkling list of names that includes seasoned thesp Geoffrey Arend—who will be a love interest for Caplan's character—and "Party Down" alum Martin Starr...

According to Variety Party Down alums Lizzy Caplan and Martin Starr have signed on to star in the film, along with Community's Alison Brie, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World's Mark Webber, and 500 Days of Summer's Geoffrey Arend. Best of all for nerdy TV fans, Caplan and Brie are actually the stars, playing two sisters with very different approaches to lifelong relationships with their significant others. The movie starts shooting in Los Angeles in July, from a script that Mohan wrote along with Jeffrey Brown and Egan Reich; the characters come from graphic novels created by Brown, whose work...

2010 was a big year for Michael Mohan. His first feature, One Too Many Mornings, premiered at Sundance (and can now be watched – in its entirety – on Hulu). He directed a music video for Fitz and the Tantrums that was blogged about by Justin Timberlake (no, really). And one year later he returns to Park City with a short film, Ex-Sex.
Mohan’s short about ex’s hooking up is gorgeous to look at, totally relatable, and so pitch-perfect in its bitter-sweetness that the only logical question would be: Couldn’t you make it as a feature? Please?
Characters as fleshed out and likable as the duo in Ex-Sex deserve an opportunity to get back together, make even more mistakes, break up again, and live on – fumbling their way through a longer film or TV series. The ex-couple of Mohan’s film clearly doesn’t want to say goodbye. Neither will the viewer.

This is the jury that I served on along with Lou Harry A&E editor of the Indianapolis Business Journal and actor Brian O’Halloran who you’ll remember from Clerks. It's interesting to watch so many debut features back to back because patterns do emerge in regards to strengths and weaknesses within first efforts. The jury discussions were yet another reminder – as if I needed one covering the Oscars so closely each year – that one man’s treasure is another man’s… anyway, the discussions were lively and fun but so much disagreement! We ended up not spreading the wealth much because we were very divided about our slate of films and even the individual achievements within the films. Our...

I also made popcorn up at the Directors and Screenwriters Labs. This was probably the best job any aspiring filmmaker could have - it was like auditing the most progressive and exclusive grad school. I was able to sit in on every advisor meeting, I was right there observing the development of some incredible filmmakers. - In One Too Many Mornings, director Michael Mohan intelligently explores the nuances of friendship and responsibility and keeps it charming. The hilarious film perfectly illustrates the complex problem of wanting to be loved while refusing to make yourself attractive. Yesterday we got the list for the films playing in competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and today we get the rest of the films that will be featured and there are quite a few that make 2010 look much stronger based on pedigree alone than I have seen in quite some time. Variety has a big write-up detailing the categories and more on the festival right here, but I am just going to offer up the titles and let you sort it all out.
The titles already in the RopeofSilicon database are linked.

All films are from the United States unless otherwise noted Abel (Mexico-u.S.), the directorial debut of actor Diego Luna, written by Luna and Agusto Mendoza, about a peculiar young boy who, as he blurs reality and fantasy, takes over the responsibilities of a family man in his father's absence. With Jose Maria Yazpik, Karina Gidi,...

In addition to the competition titles which were announced yesterday, Sundance has announced the remainder of their line-up and it includes some titles we’re already familiar with along with a huge number of premieres.
Also on the docket are two new series: Next which showcases low/no budget films and Spotlight which highlights films which festival programmers deem worthy of extra love including Enter the Void (review) and Lourdes (the trailer for which I really liked).
I’m particularly excited to see some of the titles in the New Frontier program but overall, the line-up is an impressive one but the Kristen Stewart fan in me is excited to see her turn as Joan Jett in The Runaways and I think it’s fair to say we’re all dying to see Vincenzo Natali’s hotly anticipated Splice (trailer).
In the Midnight section, Adam Green's Frozen is sounding mighty find,...

Sundance released their slate for 2010. It includes:43 documentaries on the Middle East12 films about friends who 'discover' something33 movies about people you've never heard about1 comedyHopefully the lineup this year is strong but it doesn't look that way compared to last year. Last year we had Push (Precious), that Lil Wayne documentary that never went anywhere, Mystery Team which might make my top ten, Moon, Mike Tyson documentary, Cold Souls. Just so much last January that was excellent. I hope I don't go out therer and freeze my tail off just to see...I don't know, a documentary about a former Pakistani prime minister or something silly like that. Here's the lineup so far: Premieres To showcase the diversity to contemporary independent cinema, the Sundance Film Festival Premieres section offers the latest work from American and international directors as well as world premieres of highly anticipated films. The Sundance Film Festival's competition lineup for 2010, announced Wednesday, might demand that audiences wear their serious caps. But the out-of-competition selections allow programmers and viewers to cut loose a little.
The 53 films that populate this year's Premieres, Next, Spotlight, Park City at Midnight and New Frontier sections run the gamut from the cosmically experimental to the star-studded and silly. There is indeed something for everyone at this year's event, which runs Jan. 21-31 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah.
As usual, Premieres collects work involving the industry's higher-profile talent, none more so than John Wells' feature directorial debut, "The Company Men," which stars Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Tommy Lee Jones and Chris Cooper. Mexican actor Diego Luna's directorial debut, "Abel," will screen, as will Philip Seymour Hoffman's "Jack Goes Boating."
