The question of who will continue the legacy of the 4Ks and particularly their successes on the international movie scene is one of the most dominant in the discussions among critics and scholars of Japanese cinema. Following the 2016 Un Certain Regard Jury Prize for “Harmonium”, one of the names that provides an answer to the aforementioned question is that of Koji Fukada. In the following text, we will take a closer and more thorough look at all the elements that make the 1980 born filmmaker a worthy successor of the aforementioned masters, starting from the very beginning of his life.
Born in Tokyo in Tokyo on January 5, 1980, Koji Fukada had a father who was a film buff, which resulted in him growing up in an environment surrounded with hundreds of VHS tapes, and subsequently, to become a cineaste, just like his old man. He watched the movies that inspired him to...

This post contains spoilers for the first season of Netflix's "3 Body Problem."
It's been nearly five years since "Game of Thrones" viewers said goodbye to the ambitious fantasy epic that headlined HBO's lineup for the better part of the 2010s. In that time, series co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss started developing a deeply controversial (now nixed) series called "Confederate," executive produced "The Chair" (a short-lived Netflix show about academia), directed a Leslie Jones standup special, and came under scrutiny for their lack of preparedness while making "Thrones."
Now, after five years of work on varyingly successful stray projects, Benioff and Weiss are back with co-creator credits on another ambitious genre story based on multiple beloved books. This time around, they're putting their spin on Liu Cixin's "3 Body Problem" alongside co-creator Alexander Woo. While the two shows actually couldn't be more different, it's impossible not to...

Please consider this edition of Fiscal Spotlight a public service announcement warning you that there are a mere eight days remaining before Valentine’s Day. Cutting it close for any truly bigass plans, but still plenty of time to pick up chalky Russell Stovers and mass-manufactured fluffy teddy bear squishies from Cvs. And yes, you’ll need to buy a card and figure out yet another way to poeticize and artfully obfuscate the same basic premise: “Thank you for not valuing your autonomous personhood enough to leave me, which would thus double the cost of many of my critical domestic financial obligations.”

Jennifer Nettles, lead vocalist of the country duo Sugarland and a successful solo artist, got into acting by playing Dolly Parton’s mother in the 2015 TV movie Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors. Since then she has appeared in the sequel to that movie, Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love, performed in Chicago and Waitress on Broadway, had roles in the film Harriet and the TV series Underground, and appeared on multiple episodes of the HBO show The Righteous Gemstones… which happens to be executive produced by David Gordon Green, so that paved the way for her to have a role in Green’s most recent film, The Exorcist: Believer. We know Sandra Oh can do pretty much anything, from her dramatic work as determined Dr. Cristina Yang on Grey’s Anatomy and passionate MI6 agent Eve Polastri on Killing Eve to her comedic turn as wound-up professor Ji-Yoon Kim on The Chair. In the movie Quiz Lady, she brings the funny as chaotic Jenny, a wayward soul with big dreams who’s stuck in a messy reality. Part of that mess is being estranged from her introverted, quiz show–obsessed sister, Anne (Crazy Rich Asians’ Awkwafina). “For Anne, Jenny is this disruptive, embarrassing element that she would like to keep out of her life,” director Jessica Yu says, “and then Jenny sees Anne as a charity project.” (Credit: © 20th Century Studios /Courtesy Everett Collection) Once the siblings reconnect, they quickly have more than personality clashes to worry about when they discover that they’re on the hook for gambling debts...

“3 Body Problem,” a new Netflix sci-fi series from “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, finally has a first teaser as Netflix announced on Saturday that the show will premiere in January 2024.
“As children, we fear the dark. Anything might be out there. The unknown troubles us,” an unseen man says in a voiceover. “There are those who say we should not inquire too closely, and, to who else might be living in that darkness, better not to know. But we continue to search. Life looks for life.”
As he speaks, the teaser flashes between scenes of people rioting, flashlights taking in a mysterious code that appears to be written in blood, a gnarled hand moving in water and a woman walking over lava. The clip then ends with dozens of what appear to be Roman soldiers being sucked into the sky.

The 24-minute horror short is a total psychological mind fuck, with the mysterious chair altering everyone who steps foot inside Reese’s home. Full of jarring shifts into nightmare territory, The Chair effectively serves as...

The series adaptation of Adrian Lyne’s Fatal Attraction is on the way from Paramount+, and the official trailer has arrived ahead of the series premiere on April 30, 2023.
Lizzy Caplan (“Castle Rock”) is starring as female lead Alex Forrest in the upcoming Paramount+ reboot series, with Joshua Jackson (“Dr. Death”) playing Dan Gallagher.
“In the film, Alex is the villain of the story, and Dan is the hero and there is no gray area,” Caplan told Entertainment Weekly in a recent preview piece. “Now, audiences have changed so much, we are no longer primed to believe in this villainous woman story. She’s clearly mentally ill and that’s not something that is really touched upon at all in the movie.”
Amanda Peet (“The Chair”) and Dee Wallace (Cujo, The Lords of Salem) will also star.

Some of the best television shows are about whip-smart operators and the political nuances of their professional worlds. So why then is it so challenging to make a satisfying series about academia? It’s not only difficult to think of a television show that has succeeded in lifting the veil of a university, it’s tough to think of shows that have even tried. The most recent swipe at it was Netflix’s “The Chair,” a thin but charming dramedy starring Sandra Oh that ended after a single season. Even as college campuses remain a go-to battleground for American culture wars, the inner lives of the professors caught in the crossfire are usually reserved for novels.
The latest such attempt to animate the tenured life is AMC’s “Lucky Hank,” which is built from just such a novel. It’s an adaptation of “Straight Man,” the Richard Russo novel that...

Tár, the third film from writer and director Todd Field, is a fictional biopic structured like a Greek tragedy: here we have a character of prestigious rank and fortune, brought down by something within themselves. Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett), the first female chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic with an almost impossibly illustrious career behind her, has knowingly committed harmful acts—she is a sexual predator and has abused her position of influence—and her downfall, painful to watch, is precipitated by a growing recklessness, a refusal to heed the warnings the audience can clearly interpret as signs of a coming storm. When the extent of her misconduct is revealed, Tár’s punishment is swift: she can’t see her wife or child, she loses her job, she loses her luxurious home(s), and she loses her status. The film has, for obvious if frustrating reasons, been primarily received as...

Slippin’ Jimmy slipped his way back onto AMC. Less than a year after closing out the saga of Saul Goodman on “Breaking Bad” prequel “Better Call Saul,” Bob Odenkirk is back on the channel for new series “Lucky Hank,” and the first full-length trailer for the college-set show dropped this Wednesday.
Alongside the trailer, AMC Networks also revealed that the series’ debut episode will also air on BBC America, IFC, and SundanceTV, in addition to AMC and its streamer AMC+.
Based on the 1997 novel “Straight Man” by Richard Russo, best known for the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “Empire Falls,” “Lucky Hank” has a similar premise to 2021’s Netflix series “The Chair,” which starred Sandra Oh as the stressed-out chair of a college’s English department. Odenkirk takes on the role of William Henry Devereaux Jr., the English department chair at Railton College, a poorly funded university in the Pennsylvania rust belt.

Scream queen and horror's current "It-girl," Jenna Ortega, has signed on to star and produce in a coming-of-age romantic drama that's being described as Richard Linklater's "Before Sunrise" meets "The Perks of Being a Wallflower." The film, "Winter Spring Summer Or Fall," is the feature directorial debut of Tiffany Paulsen, who folks may know for writing the films "Holidate" and "About Fate." The script comes from Dan Schoffer, who wrote the script that was used in the Starz filmmaking competition show, "The Chair," which became Shane Dawson's "Not Cool" and A.M. Lukas' "Hollidaysburg."
In an interesting bit of casting news, Ortega will be starring opposite her "Wednesday" co-star, Percy Hynes White, who played Xavier Thorpe on the Netflix series. The duo will play a pair of teens who "meet and fall in love over four significant days of the year," according to a report from Deadline.

'90s kids remember the flashy fashion and hilarious hijinks of Will Smith on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," but the modern remake of the series, "Bel-Air," is not just a massive hit for Peacock, it's also a completely new take on the story of young Will Smith (Jabari Banks) as he adjusts from the streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of the Bel-Air neighborhood in Los Angeles. The series' humble beginnings are rooted in Morgan Cooper's fan-made fake trailer for a dramatic envisioning of "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," but has since evolved into a legitimate hit for Peacock, with Cooper serving as co-writer, director, and executive producer.
The hit series has also breathed new life into the original show for a new generation. As one of /Film's resident writers who spends an embarrassing amount of time on TikTok, the existence of "Bel-Air" has definitely inspired...

Oh will play Ms. Sofia Mori, a liberated feminist who in the midst of a love triangle begins to awaken to the complexity of her own Asian American identity.
