Ahead of the Emmy nomination voting on Thursday, the Television Academy has revised its Emmy rules regarding submissions and nominee numbers. This update will significantly impact the scripted variety category, which includes “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” and “Saturday Night Live.”
The new Rules and Procedures document on the Emmys website, updated on May 22, details changes under the Nominations Procedures section. Previously, categories with fewer than 20 submissions required contenders to be screened by a peer group, with nominees needing at least 90% approval. If no submissions met this threshold, the highest vote-getter would be declared the winner.
The updated rules have lowered the nomination threshold from 90% to 70%, as well as capped the number of potential nominees at two.
In 2023, the scripted variety category had 12 submissions, resulting in three nominees. This year, Variety has been tracking only four expected submissions: last year’s winner John Oliver, “SNL,” CBS’s “After Midnight...

Reality TV may be entering a new era of legal jeopardy.
New York Times reporter Julia Jacobs today cited a 2022 federal law that gives employees who have complaints of sexual assault or harassment the right to resolve disputes through the courts. That’s even if their contract calls for arbitration.
The 2022 law is loosening the grip of contracts laden with nondisclosure agreements and the use of closed-door arbitration proceedings to settle any disputes.
The Times cited several reality TV lawsuits in its report:
*** The makers of the Netflix dating series Love Is Blind were sued by contestant Tran Dang for “false imprisonment” for confining the cast to hotel rooms without their phones. She also claimed a fellow cast member groped her and exposed himself.
*** Bravo’s Real Housewives star Caroline Manzo accused a co-star of forcibly groping and kissing her, and said producers “regularly ply the Real Housewives cast with alcohol,...

Love Is Blind is merely a TV show about TV relationships. Showtime’s Couples Therapy, however, is one big psychoanalysis session bursting with real vulnerability that’ll make you want to ditch your golden goblets forever.
Netflix’s social experiment sets up singles in adjoined rooms — called pods — in hopes that they might fall in love without the distraction of physical appearance, and ultimately forces couples to walk down the aisle where they’ll either say “I do,” or walk away from each other forever. But the series gets bogged down by pretend people and exchanges completely devoid of flirtation,...

Reality television series have an incredibly hit-or-miss track record when it comes to producing viable music acts, especially bands made up of people who have only ever wanted to be solo artists. Here in the USA, we tend to cling to certain stereotypes about our Canadian neighbors. That they’re exceptionally polite. That they’re obsessed with ice hockey. That they say the word “eh” a lot. The numbers are in and Beckham and Squid Game: The Challenge have topped the charts in terms of Netflix viewership when it comes to non-scripted titles.
The two series, a docuseries and reality competition, were the seventh and 15th most-watched non-scripted shows to debut in the second half of 2023, respectively.
But as Netflix continues to delve into the docuseries genre and ramp up its reality offerings, how do these shows compare to top shows from its previous data dump, in particular Love Is Blind.
Firstly, it’s complicated.
Beckham, which told the story of the former Manchester United legend’s career, debuted in October and scored 43.9M views. This was as a result of only being four parts.
Squid Game: The Challenge, the reality series based on the dystopian scripted series, secured 271M views across the period after its launch at the end of November. But that series, which was...

Many know Brett Brown as the charming contestant from Netflix’s Love is Blind. The multi-talented personality is presently the director of Immersive Design at Nike and a conversationalist who strikes a balance between stoic wisdom and emotional competency.

Reality TV stars Lauren Hamilton-Speed and Joey Sasso shared details from their experience on the TV series The Goat in their new uInterview.
The Goat is a new reality competition show that features 14 popular reality TV personalities who compete in a series of mental, physical and social challenges to claim the title of “Greatest Of All Time.” Each contestant has joined the competition with a $200,000 prize and has to satirize the very tropes and archetypes that propelled them to fame.
Hamilton-Speed, a former contestant on Love Is Blind, pinpointed the challenge in the show she found most difficult. “The hardest challenge was the talent show, which is weird because I am a very talented individual — but what I don’t do is make balloon animals,”she told uInterview founder Erik Meers. “I could’ve picked any other thing, but I got balloon animals? And I had to dress as a clown…...

Sparks flew between Brett Layton and Ryan Ignasiak when they met as strangers at the altar and tied the knot, or so we thought seeing the smiles on their faces.
Little did we know that Ryan was not impressed with his bride. but we would find that out soon enough and so would Brett.
The experts matched the raven-haired beauty with Ryan because he was a serial dater in Houston and was ready to settle down and find a woman of depth.
Meanwhile, the warm and humorous Brett hadn’t been in a relationship for years before finally deciding that she was ready to settle down and find a husband.
Dr Pepper and Pastor Cal hoped these opposites would attract, but sadly that did not happen.
Brett tried her best to make the marriage work, but Ryan showed no interest in his wife and refused to confess that he was not attracted to her.

For the 12th and final day of Netflix is a Joke Fest on Sunday, the streamer turned to one of its biggest reality TV hits to bring the laughs, with a guys vs. girls battle of previous Love is Blind cast members.
Hosted by Nick and Vanessa Lachey, the event — dubbed “Clash of the Casts” — saw alums of the dating show compete against each other Family Feud style, with the guys’ side comprised of Marshall Glaze (season four), Brett Brown (season four), Milton Johnson (season five) and Jimmy Presnell (season six), and the women’s side featuring Ad Smith (season six), Jessica Vestel (season six), Lydia Velez Gonzalez (season five) and Tiffany Pennywell (season four).
The two married couples on the stage — Brown and Pennywell, and Johnson and Gonzalez — opted not to go face-to-face directly, but talked some trash across from each other as the game began. Nick Lachey also...

Undoubtedly, all of Nick and Vanessa Lachey‘s plans are coming together. While they received backlash for their insistence on the Love Is Blind couple’s need for babies, seemingly, it was only a matter of time. After several other individual cast members have given birth to babies recently, now Bliss Poureetezadi Goytowski and Zack Goytowski have added to the precious bundles of joy.
Love Is Blind Baby Boom
While Love is Blind‘s Jessica Batten left the show without a man, she found her true love during the pandemic. After that, she and her husband, Benjamin McGrath, gave birth to a little baby boy, Dax in June 2023. Furthermore, Giannina Gibelli and Bachelor Nation‘s Blake Horstmann have also added a sweet little boy, Heath, to the Lib circle as of March 2024. While the babies are starting to boom for Lib, there is still room for more lovable little people.

Kim Kardashian was met with resounding boos at Netflix’s roast of Tom Brady — but you’d never know it unless you watched it live.
The streamer has edited out the portion of the roast where Kardashian was booed, TVLine has confirmed. (The Hollywood Reporter first noted the change.) In Sunday’s original live broadcast, Kardashian was booed loudly as she took the stage at the roast, stopping midway through her first joke to glare at the crowd as several of her fellow roasters came to her defense. But in the version currently streaming on Netflix, the booing is nowhere to be found.

Reality shows on Netflix are bizarre. They come in different forms and shapes, with a winner in the end based on who was able to endure the rules of the game. Squid Game: The Challenge, Physical 100, Surviving Paradise, Selling Sunset, Love is Blind, and Indian Matchmaking are some examples of reality shows that have appeared on Netflix for the world to watch. Despite its mediocre content, a percentage of the audience from around the world consumes these shows, which encourages Netflix to come up with newer forms of entertainment.

Tom Brady may be the greatest of all time, but his roast wasn’t. The thing is, it maybe could have been.
Netflix is all about eventizing these days, and probably the easiest way to do that — outside of sports rights — is live programming. Sunday’s “The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady,” had plenty of sports and too much live-ness for its own good.
The roast began at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt, and proceeded to run, non-stop, for more than three hours. Never have commercials on Netflix been more needed. Or a video editor.
What was the point of doing this live? The danger, sure, but roasts are dangerous by their very nature. Live makes it an even thinner tightrope, we get that, but at what expense? The answer: enjoyment.

CBS is taking a page out of Netflix’s playbook by announcing its programming success in the billions of minutes watched.
If you were wondering what that might mean to a broadcast network, it measures out to 456 billion minutes of CBS programming watched in the first four months of 2024.
With two new hits on its hands — Tracker and Elsbeth — this doesn’t surprise us in the least.
Here’s the real measure of their success, though.
Viewers delivered over 30% more time spent in front of CBS programming than Netflix and over 231% more than all other streamers combined.
No wonder they’re patting themselves on the back.
Those are incredible numbers that often go unnoticed when you use traditional ratings tools to deliver the news.
Even crazier, the time spent watching CBS programming has increased by 5.8% over the same period in 2023.
People often wonder how shows can be considered a success...
