Sent away by his masters for his own good Warning: Spoilers
"My Hero Academia: All Might Rising" is an anime short film from 2019, so this one is only slightly over a year old and you can see in the title the first three words to which franchise this belongs. It was made by Kôhei Horikoshi, so it of course a Japanese production and it says four minutes here on imdb, which is really short, but the version I watched ran for under three minutes even and that already included closing titles and I believe it was complete. At least judging from the fact that all the screenshots here were included. The one that shows him with his forced smile is from the very end and reminded me a bit of the Joker. Not sure if this was intentional. Obviously, this epic clown charcater is not included in this film and has not (yet?) made it to Japanese animated movies. There is a lot happening here for such a short film for sure. The beginning is really spectacular as we have a master with very strong powers make sure his apprentice has to leave him. Then there is a jump forward in time. Several years. And we see the guy who had to leave back then train with another master, one that is less spectacular though and seems to have no superpowers. And still the latter wins the fight relatively easy vs. the one who is the protagonist in here as we see him in both sequences. Also the film ends with him leaving/fleeing because he is in danger to be attacked by a superior force and while boarding the plane, he says that he will be back when he is strong enough to fight or protect those dear to him. It is all a bit pretentious here with how meaningful it is supposed to be, but for me it really makes no big impact. Maybe it is necessary to be a big fan of the franchise already before watching this one here, but I'd say that it won't really turn you into a fan. By no means, it's a failure and it was a close call for me between giving this one a positive or a negative recommendation, but overall, I have to go for the latter now. Thumbs down. Not recommended.
