On a calm Sunday morning, it’s a pleasure to look at the streaming channels to see what’s there and what movies have come out that might not be that well-known. Motherly is one of those that are kind of predictable but still offers up enough of a thrill that makes it worth watching. Still, there are those times when predictability can be comfortable since it gives the audience a chance to simply turn off their

Lora Burke in Motherly
In a big, rambling house in the middle of nowhere, a mother, Kate (Lora Burke), and daughter, Beth (Tessa Kozma), have been sequestered away from the world, hidden because of a horror in their past. Beth is bored, stomping around the place, resentful because she’s been taken away from her friends and she can’t have a proper birthday party. Kate is trying to hold it together for both their sakes, but when she begins to suspect that someone is prowling around the house, she realises that their situation could be about to get a lot worse. With Motherly just released in US cinemas, I met up with Lora and director/co-writer Craig David Wallace to discuss it.

Over the years, we’ve seen a very odd trend at the Grammys: albums missing their respective genre categories, yet still getting into Album of the Year. This seemed to be a case mostly for critically acclaimed albums that might not have been the biggest sellers — see Lana Del Rey’s “Norman F*cking Rockwell,” Haim’s “Women In Music Pt. III,” Janelle Monáe’s “Dirty Computer,” and Lorde’s “Melodrama.” Still, this trend wasn’t only reserved to critical darlings, as Post Malone’s “Hollywood’s Bleeding,” Jacob Collier’s “Djesse Vol. 3,” Sara Barellies’s “The Blessed Unrest,” and H.E.R.‘s “I Used to Know Her” all followed the trend. But those anomalies occurred when nomination review committees could pick and choose the final contenders from among the top 20 vote-getters regardless of how the genre categories shook out. Now without the committees, the question is whether all...

Ej Dimera is returning to Salem. Former Spartacus: Blood and Sand star Dan Feuerriegel has been cast as the new Ej, last played by James Scott in 2014. Feurriegel’s casting has been rumored and is now confirmed.
In Scott’s final episodes as the character, Ej was presumably shot to death by his disloyal henchman, but it was eventually revealed that he was actually alive. He was later left severely injured in an explosion and since then had been recuperating in Europe.

On August 26th, 1973, Joni Mitchell arrived at Studio Instrument Rentals in Los Angeles, where Neil Young and his band the Santa Monica Flyers were recording the boozy Tonight’s the Night. Joined by guitarists Ben Keith and Nils Lofgren, drummer Ralph Molina, and bassist Billy Talbot, Mitchell and Young tore through “Raised on Robbery,” soon to be released on her album Court and Spark.
