Sterling performances by Conleth Hill and Stephen Graham as an author and his stalker lend ballast to Michael Lennox’s debut feature
Michael Lennox is the Northern Irish director whose 2014 short Boogaloo and Graham was nominated for the short film Oscar, and won Bafta’s equivalent award for the same film. (Lennox also directed Awaydays, the Stephen Fingleton-scripted short that Fingleton himself expanded into the widely admired post-apocalyptic thriller The Survivalist.) Now Lennox is making his own feature film debut with this Belfast-set thriller, which treads a well-worn path as it investigates the symbiotic relationship between a celebrated author and TV personality, and his security-guard stalker.

Having it's world premier at Rotterdam is Pat Holden's (Awaydays) poltergeist thriller which is supposedly based on a true story. Described as having some incredible 1970's art direction, the story revolves around a family who moves into their dream home only to find an unwelcome 'presence' who soon makes friends with their 12 year old daughter. The film is produced by Bil Bungay who worked on Duncan Jones Moon and I have it on good authority from one critic that it's a great film, but that doesn't mean anything until we at Quiet Earth get to judge for ourselves. We've been eagerly awaiting a trailer and have been in touch with the folks behind the film, so as soon as we get it, you'll see it!

From the makers of Awaydays comes Powder, a new rock ‘n’ roll film that will be released in cinemas to celebrate the close of the festival season. The story of Liverpool four piece The Grams, Powder captures all the energy and excitement of a band breaking through, complete with all the trappings of sex, drugs and band rivalries. Filmed on location at V Festival and Ibiza and adapted from the best-selling novel by Kevin Sampson, the former manager of The Farm, Powder has all the ingredients to commit the machinations of the music industry to screen.
Alongside the cast of young British acting talent including Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones) and Liam Boyle (Awaydays) and The Rascals’ members Greg Mighall and Joe Edwards. Together they make up The Grams, a fictional band that is given an authentic identity thanks to an original soundtrack of new songs written and performed by Starsailor’s James Walsh.

Why is it so hard to capture the energy of rock'n'roll on film? That's what Powder writer Kevin Sampson asked himself as he watched the Grams take to the stage
A crowd of some 50,000 edged forward with mild irritation as the Grams took to the stage. The lad next to me nudged his pal, their faces set in that certain way that has become ritual at music festivals over the years.
"Here come the whipping boys," said those faces. "Get the bottles of wee-wee ready."
It was quite some journey that had taken the Grams to this top-end-of-the-bill slot at the V Festival. Paolo Nutini had just finished, the Enemy were on next, with Oasis due to play what turned out to be their last-ever show later that night. So what were a band that doesn't actually exist doing up there on stage?

Screenterrier posted the casting call for indie pyschological film Truth Or Dare, back in November 2010. With the film now in post-production, a full synopsis and first image have now emerged.
Five teenage friends are taken hostage by a vengeful psychopath and forced to play a party game with life-or-death consequences.
An end-of-year party for an 'alpha' group of first year university students turns nasty when a game of 'truth or dare' ends in humiliation for ultra-rich social misfit Felix. For five students at the gathering, this unpleasant but seemingly minor incident will have unexpectedly devastating repercussions.
Some months later, the friends meet again en route to a surprise party for Felix, who has been away traveling. Arriving at the venue - an old hunting lodge - they are met by Justin, Felix's charismatic older brother, who explains that Felix will be late for the party. He persuades the gang to...

Who’s going to be joining Johnny Depp in Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides next summer? More casting news has been forthcoming…
Production is set to begin in the next couple of months on what's effectively a reboot for the Pirates Of The Caribbean cinematic franchise. The fourth film, entitled On Stranger Tides, definitely has Johnny Depp returning as Captain Jack Sparrow, and Geoffrey Rush will also step aboard once more as Barbossa. We also know that Penelope Cruz has signed up, and that Ian McShane is on villain duties.
Speculation, however, has now been rife over who's going to slip into the ‘Orlando Bloom role'. Bloom's character won't be returning, but Disney is looking for a not dissimilar part for a young male actor. And apparently, the two names in the running are Max Irons (son of Jeremy), and Sam Claflin. We might be going out on a limb here,...

Good morning Boxwishers and welcome to your weekend. For those of us in the UK, it’s Spring Bank Holiday meaning a day off, while for our American cousins this weekend brings possibly the biggest cinematic showdown of the year so far. In one corner we have Ben Stiller and his animated museum in Night at the Museum 2 and in the other John Connor (Christian Bale) and the other resistance fighters battling the machines in Terminator Salvation. Who’s going to come out on top? You tell us! And here in the UK, although we have to wait for Terminator Salvation (ggrr!), we can also catch the family comedy or opt instead for one of two Brit offerings – teenage horror in Tormented or retro drama Awaydays. Find out more after the jump…
If you see… Ben Stiller’s museum night guard Larry return to action, this time at Washington D.

Finally, a trailer for a film I've been keeping an eye on since right before it premiered at the London Film Festival. Set in the post-punk world of 1979, the story is based on the novel by Kevin Sampson who also adapted the script. It's a coming of age tale for bored teenagers and involves lots of fighting and looks incredibly well shot. It opens on May 22nd in the UK and I hope we're not far behind.
On the Wirral in the grim early years of Margaret Thatcher’s premiership, the opportunities for thrill-seeking young men looking to escape 9 to 5 drudgery are what they’ve always been: sex, drugs, rock n’ roll, fashion, football and fighting. Paul Carty (Nicky Bell) goes to the game, chases skirt, pores over records in the racks at Probe, and gets to see Echo and the Bunnymen, but his fraught family life and dull job leave him feeling bereft.

SXSW is one of my favorite festivals of the year as it showcases some of the best and most innovative real independent films, and with this host of world premiers, it's also playing alot of Sundance material as well as genre fare from all over the world, many of which we've covered heavily in these pages.
From the Sundance lineup, we have films like Moon, The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, You Won't Miss Me, Grace, and Humpday, among others.
For the world genre material we've covered, there's Lake Mungo, The Square, Zift, and Awaydays.
I think you get the point that lots of great looking film will be playing. I'll leave a bit of the exploration to you..
Lineup after the break.

I've been clocking this for a while now as it's premiering at the London Film Fest, but unfortunately our London correspondent won't be able to attend the premier due to a conflicting schedule so we'll have to settle for what's publicly available, and right now that's a full synopsis and 3 clips! For those familiar with Green Street Hooligans and how good that was, this is a more British version sans any American actors.
