Amy Schumer was in the zone. This was in March, when she was filming on the street in Brooklyn for her upcoming movie “Kinda Pregnant,” a comedy about a woman who pretends to be knocked up for attention. In one take, Schumer emerged from a subway station while answering a phone call — and was interrupted by a stranger shouting at her from the sidewalk: “Fuck you, Amy Schumer! You’re a Zionist! You love genocide!”
Disruptions of the four-letter variety aren’t unusual in a raucous place like New York, though they’re usually less pointed. Schumer didn’t break character, refusing to stop working as the woman carried on. The actress finished the scene finally, packed up her stuff and went home to her husband and their 4-year-old son.
“It didn’t even raise my heart rate,” Schumer says over brunch at a cozy Brooklyn Heights tavern a couple days later.

Goodbye HBO Max, hello Max. Warner Bros. Discovery announced several weeks back that the company was dropping the "HBO" from the name of its flagship streaming service, and that day has come. What does that mean for you, the subscriber? For one, it means a lot more movies and TV shows will be streaming in 4K, and the list of initial titles is pretty impressive. There are, however, a few caveats.
Those who wish to watch movies like "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Argo" in Ultra HD will need to be subscribed to the new tier offered by Max called "Ultimate Ad-Free." This goes for $19.99 per month and includes access to the service's library of 4K movies and TV shows. There is also a plan with ads for $9.99 per month and a regular ad-free plan for $15.99 per month. Sudheer Sirivara, Global Technology Platform for Warner Bros. Discovery, had this to...

“Life & Beth,” Amy Schumer’s new show for Hulu, unfolds in three distinct acts. The first sees Beth (Schumer) as a wine salesperson in Manhattan who’s quietly miserable with her job and in her relationship to Matt (Kevin Kane), a “New York 8” who treats her like an inconvenient afterthought. The second act sends her to her hometown on Long Island, where she meets and falls for John (Michael Cera), a vineyard farmer whose lifestyle and blunt charm shows her the possibility of a different kind of life. The final act, unfolding over the season’s last two episodes, has Beth confront her own mortality and dive deeper into the childhood that made her want to get so far away from Long Island in the first place.

HBO Max is continuing a steady roll-out in Europe with its second wave of countries.
The WarnerMedia-owned streaming service is launching in an additional 15 nations on March 8, this time targeting Central and Eastern Europe. This covers Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia.
Christina Sulebakk, general manager for HBO Max Emea, says it has been a “cautious choice” to get the markets launched in Europe, where the HBO Max roll-out began in earnest in October with launches in the Nordics as well as Spain and Andorra.
Those countries were obvious choices as the company had solid streaming customer bases that were already familiar with HBO Nordic and HBO España VOD services. “[We had to] make sure we could migrate over that customer base and get them on HBO Max first,” says Sulebakk.

HBO Max announced the order of a new unscripted series from comedian Amy Schumer called “Amy Learns To…”.
Spanning eight half-hour episodes, “Amy Learns To…” watches Schumer step out of her comfort zone and into someone’s by learning a new skill, craft or trade from a local expert in her husband’s hometown on Martha’s Vineyard. From diving for clams to selling real estate or repairing a roof, she will meet each challenge with wit, vulnerability and the willingness to try anything.
“We are pumped for this,” Schumer said.
“Amy Learns To…” marks the comedian’s second project with HBO Max. It follows up the 2020 docuseries “Expecting Amy,” which chronicled Schumer’s struggles throughout her pregnancy journey. All while getting ready for the birth of her first-born son, she continued touring in preparation for her Netflix stand-up special, “Amy Schumer: Growing.” The series captured her suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum,...

HBO Max has given an eight-episode series order to the unscripted series “Amy Learns To…” starring Amy Schumer, the streamer announced Thursday.
The project will see Schumer step “out of her comfort zone and into someone else’s,” according to HBO Max’s description. “In each episode, Amy learns a new skill, craft, or trade from a local expert in her husband’s hometown on Martha’s Vineyard.”
New skills Schumer will tackle on the show include “learning to dive for clams, sell real estate, perform a magic trick, or (sort of) repair a roof.”
The Intellectual Property Corporation, which also produces Selena Gomez’s “Selena + Chef” for HBO Max and the drag queen makeover series “We’re Here” for HBO, will produce. Schumer will serve as executive produer alongside Ipc’s Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman.

When Amy Schumer first discovered she was pregnant, she could never have predicted the tough road the pregnancy would take her on, much less that it would be the subject of a three-part documentary miniseries for HBO Max.
The comedian was in the throes of preparing a comedy special when she was struck with hyperemesis gravidarum, a hugely debilitating condition that affects around 1% of pregnant women, meaning they experience prolonged and severe nausea and vomiting beyond the first trimester. From hospitalizations, to performing in front of crowds of thousands, to moments at home with her husband Chris Fischer, Schumer shares it all in Expecting Amy.
“Once I started getting really sick, I think [filming] was a defense mechanism that made me feel like I was in some sort of control since I had no control over my body,” Schumer said, speaking during a virtual panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted awards-season event.

A slew of popular and acclaimed comedies are coming to HBO Max November 1.
WarnerMedia announced on Friday that all seasons of Comedy Central’s “Chappelle’s Show,” “Nathan For You,” “Key & Peele,” “Inside Amy Schumer,” and “Reno 911!” will be available on HBO Max at the start of the month.
The impending availability of the shows marks a further bulking up of HBO Max’s comedy library; the streaming service already offers streaming for the complete libraries of popular shows such as “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “Rick and Morty,” and “Friends.”
Acclaimed comedies are considered one of the most lucrative gets for streaming services. Netflix reportedly paid over $500 million to acquire the streaming rights to “Seinfeld” — the acclaimed show about nothing is headed to Netflix in 2021 — while HBO Max’s streaming pact for the wildly popular “The Big Bang Theory” was estimated to be worth as much as $1 billion,...

As expected, Friends appears to be delivering the goods for HBO Max, with WarnerMedia revealing that it is the top show on the platform since its launch on May 27.
The disclosure follows AT&T’s earnings call last week, when CEO John Stankey said the service has attracted 4.1 new signups, including through direct outreach and AT&T wireless offers. While that number is lower than the blockbuster tally for Disney+ in its early days, it puts HBO Max on track to reach its goal of 50 million U.S. subscribers by 2025, Stankey said. The CEO called the launch of HBO Max “flawless.”
Love Life, interestingly, is ranked as the No. 2 series on HBO Max. The Lionsgate-produced anthology series, whose first season starred Anna Kendrick, is “right behind” Friends, according to a press release. In third place is The Big Bang Theory. Two months after launching, HBO Max has released, if not viewership numbers, at least a ranking of its three most popular offerings thus far.
Topping the streaming service’s self-reported ranking is, not surprisingly, its library of Friends episodes. (Remember, Netflix in 2018 spent a hefty $80 million to hold onto the Must-See TV staple for just one more year, given how it draws in and holds onto subscribers.)

HBO Max is following in the footsteps of its streaming rivals in making bold viewership claims, while withholding actual data.
The streamer has announced that, in a shock to no one, “Friends” is the “No. 1 performing show” on the platform to date. What that means exactly is unclear, as HBO Max doesn’t provide any concrete viewership numbers to back up that claim.
HBO Max was of course supposed to launch with its much-heralded “Friends” reunion special, however, filming on the special has been delayed due to the coronavirus.
In perhaps more surprising news, the streamer says its “No. 2 performing show” is Anna Kendrick original “Love Life.” “Friends” is supposedly “closely followed” by the comedy, which was picked up for a second season last month, despite mixed reviews.

HBO Max giveth, HBO Max taketh away: The streaming service surprised early adopters when it announced that all eight “Harry Potter” films would be available at launch, but the films will be leaving the platform as quickly as they came.

A handful of other popular films, including “Full Metal Jacket,” “Magic Mike,” and both volumes of “Kill Bill” will also be leaving the platform at the end of August.
IndieWire has confirmed with sources that the impending “Harry Potter” removals were due to licensing windows. It is unclear if or when the films will return to the platform.

HBO Max has unveiled a glitzy advertisement that showcases a variety of new and returning titles, including the first footage from Ridley Scott’s “Raised by Wolves” and Steven Soderbergh’s “Let Them All Talk,” which stars Meryl Streep.
Scott’s “Raised by Wolves” has been hotly anticipated for months. The series centers on two androids who must raise human children on a mysterious planet and while the brief footage in the new HBO Max video doesn’t provide much in the way of additional plot details, the snippets tease plenty of visually impressive landscapes and a fairly creepy shot of a bloody android walking into a hail of bullets.
As for the Streep-led “Let Them All Talk,” will center on an acclaimed author who undergoes a journey of self-discovery with old friends. The film will also star Dianne Wiest, Candice Bergen, Gemma Chan, and Lucas Hedges.

In the world of stand-up comedy Amy Schumer is an acquired taste. Bursting onto television screens in 2013 with her groundbreaking comedy series “Inside Amy Schumer,” the actress/writer/comedienne has used her platform to discuss everything from her vagina, to rape culture, to double standards when it comes to beauty. Her work is especially feminine and where stand-up remains a boys club, it’s easy to see why people who don’t like Schumer really don’t like her.
Regardless of the misogyny in the industry, Schumer has carried on, documenting her life most recently in the 2017 Netflix special “Amy Schumer Growing.” Similar to that, “Expecting Amy” blends documentary footage of Schumer going on tour, filming the aforementioned stand-up for Netflix, struggling with a difficult pregnancy, as well as her husband’s autism diagnosis. “Expecting Amy,” a new docu-series on HBO Max, opens with its subject, the comedian Amy Schumer, weeping happy tears in a self-shot video. She’s trying to distract herself from the massive personal upheaval soon to be wrought by her pregnancy — or trying to compound her sudden joy — by doing something touristy and cute; she’s at the zoo. As the series runs on, it becomes clear that for Schumer, a trip to the zoo is nothing new, but she’s just usually the attraction, not the guest. Framed as a document of Schumer’s growing family, “Expecting Amy” is most intriguing as a “Truth or Dare”-style examination of fame, a look at the act and life of a comedian coming into conflict.

HBO Max is set to enter into its second month of existence. And you know what that means: it’s Christmas in July!
HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2020 is highlighted by one prominent Christmas movie: last year’s Emilia Clarke-starring Last Christmas. But the real cause for Christmas in July is all the exciting animated DC content coming our way on the first of the month. July 1 sees the arrival of just about every animated Batman project ever created. July 1 also features the arrival of just about every Justice League animated series ever created as well.
If that weren’t enough, July 1 is also when every live-action Superman movie (save for Man of Steel) makes it streaming debut. July is starting to look like a month where HBO Max establishes its real potential and geek culture bonafides…despite an at-times difficult rollout.

On the day after the 2016 election, the “Trainwreck” actor and comedian took to her Instagram account to express her rage at the millions of Americans who had supported Donald Trump. “People who voted for him, you are weak. You’re not just misinformed, you didn’t attempt information,” Schumer wrote online. “Well, you’ve gotten what you asked for. And now you can watch the sky open up, literally.”
“Wow, who said that?” Clinton asked, when presented with the quote.
“That’s me,” Schumer responded.
For nearly an hour, Schumer and Clinton spoke in a far-ranging conversation over Zoom which airs on Tuesday afternoon for Variety’s first virtual TV festival. What brought them together was an unexpected common experience. Both Clinton and Schumer are the subjects of recent documentaries about their careers and lives as trailblazing feminists — in both politics (for...
