Warner Bros. Discovery’s fourth-quarter success largely depends on strong performance at Food Network, as the cable channel draws its highest number of eyeballs — and ad dollars — when the holidays roll around. But in 2023, the network had additional tasks to check off for the company, including driving viewers to Max and pushing them to the theater for titles including Warner Bros. With a “huge” turnout of 34 million viewers across 52.5 hours of holiday-themed programming, Food Network chief Betsy Ayala told Variety‘s “Strictly Business” podcast she’s proud of the results, which were driven by seasonal favorites including “Holiday Baking Championship,” “Holiday Wars” and “Beat Bobby Flay: Holiday Throwdown,” as well as new competition series “Elf on the Shelf: Sweet Showdown.”

After tackling a contemporary sequel last week with Insidious: Chapter Two, Trace and I figured we should do it again. This week we’re dissecting the sequel to queer director Adam Robitel‘s immensely popular Escape Room, which was released in 2021 as Escape Room: Tournament of Champions.
In the film, survivors Zoey (Taylor Russell) and Ben (Logan Miller) return to New York in an attempt to discover the secrets behind the mysterious Minos Corporation. Instead, they’re lured back into the game with a fresh batch of survivors, including “pain freak” Rachel (Holland Roden), influencer Brianna (Indya Moore), and alcoholic priest Nathan (Thomas Cocquerel).

A lot of TV companies are judged by how quickly they can introduce new shows. Warner Bros. Discovery thinks it may find some gains by developing new ways to introduce audiences to series and content that already exists.
The strategy has been playing out in open view on some of the company’s biggest cable networks. Audiences watching NBA basketball games have been pushed to sample series such as Food Network’s “Tournament of Champions,” HGTV’s “Rock The Block” and Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch.” And some portion decided to follow the programs back to their original homes for more. According to company research, 12% of TNT sports viewers who sampled “Tournament” went on to watch it on Food Network. Likewise, 10% of basketball fans that tried “Rock The Block” followed it to HGTV while 7% of viewers who tested “Deadliest Catch” watched more of it on Discovery.

Flavortown is back — and it’s better than ever.
Guy Fieri returns to the Food Network this week with a new cooking game show, “Guy’s Ultimate Game Night.” The series, which is the beloved host’s fourth show with the network, is stacked with celebrity guests such as Alyssa Milano, Penn and Teller and Natasha Leggero, who will compete in food-related games and trivia for a chance to win a prize for their favorite charity. A trailer that came out earlier this month sees contestants playing classics like charades and hot potato, garnishing a pizza to resemble Guy Fieri and blind-decorating a cake.
Supporting Fieri in his hosting duties is chef Antonia Lofaso, a fan-favorite fixture on Bravo’s “Top Chef,” “Chopped” and “Cutthroat Kitchen.”
“If you put a game show, late night talk show and a food competition show in a blender, you get ‘Guy’s Ultimate Game Night,’” Fieri said in a statement.

HGTV veteran Jane Latman will be taking the helm of Food Network, expanding her responsibilities as President, HGTV and Streaming Home Content. The company behind the so-called “escape rooms” of the Escape Room movies is called Minos. King Minos, the Cretan of myth, fed children to his minotaur as a matter of rite. So it’s no wonder that a company taking his name would be heavy on sacrifice, low on ethics, and altogether suspicious; it’s no wonder these games aren’t much fun.

As a huge fan of the first Escape Room, I had a really great time with the sequel, Tournament of Champions, which reunites survivors Zoey (Taylor Russell) and Ben (Logan Miller) directly after they survived the deadly games of the mysterious Minos organization. Instead of running, the duo decides to head to New York in search of answers and in hopes of bringing those at Minos to justice. But before they get too far in their investigative efforts, Ben and Zoey find themselves unexpectedly trapped in a new game, but this time not only are the rules different, but they’re also playing alongside other survivors of Minos’ previous escape rooms, too. And the clock is ticking, as they’re forced to decode new clues, avoid perilous traps, and withstand Minos’ tortuous games in this “Tournament of Champions.”

If you ever wondered what would happen if Walt Disney was also the Jigsaw Killer, then a) you are a very interesting person, and b) these “Escape Room” movies were made for you.
“Escape Room: Tournament of Champions,” the second film in Adam Robitel’s PG-13 horror franchise, solidifies the series’ mission statement to show off a deadly and insidiously complicated amusement park, where the theming is heavy-handed and all the attractions will kill you if you don’t interact with them exactly the way the designers intended.
These aren’t movies about protagonists undergoing a meaningful transformation. They are extended YouTube walkthroughs of the coolest places you’d never, ever want to go.
The original “Escape Room” saw a group of people drawn into a game constructed by the Minos Corporation. Each room they encountered had a different visual theme, and only by solving tricky clues could the heroes escape with their lives.

Back in January 2019, Escape Room became a breakout success at the box office, taking in more than $150 million worldwide. And now, fans won’t have to wait much longer for the follow-up effort from Adam Robitel - Tournament of Champions - as it is finally set to be unleashed in theaters beginning this Friday, July 16th, courtesy of Columbia Pictures. Picking up right where the original film left off, the sequel finds survivors Zoey (Taylor Russell) and Ben (Logan Miller) heading off to New York in search of answers as to just who was behind their terrifying experiences inside the series of escape rooms previously, and just why they were hellbent on leaving no survivors of the game in the first place. Of course, based on the usage of Tournament of Champions in the title, it should come as no surprise that Zoey and Ben find themselves in the midst...

"It's happening again..." Sony Pictures has unveiled the first trailer for Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, the sequel to the horror Escape Room from 2019. And this isn't even the only "escape room" horror either! Tournament of Champions is the new sequel to the box office hit psychological thriller that terrified audiences. In this one, six people unwittingly find themselves locked in another series of escape rooms, slowly uncovering what they have in common to survive... and discovering that they’ve all played the game before. Of course. Starring Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, Thomas Cocquerel, Holland Roden, Indya Moore, Carlito Olivero, and Jay Erving. Uh, this actually looks pretty damn good! This might be better than the first one. I dig the concept of realistic locations turning into game rooms, and there's some cool references in this. Is that lighthouse a nod to Annihilation? Are the lasers a nod to Cube?...

Before Guy Fieri ever wrapped his mouth around the smoked-wing nachos or Nashville hot fried chicken he regularly nibbles on TV, he had to navigate the twists of the pretzel business.
When he was around ten years old, Fieri’s parents took him on a ski trip, and would essentially let him wander as he saw fit for most of the day. He would eat a big pretzel for lunch. “Have you ever had them?” he recalls asking his parents. “They are steamed. They’ve got salt on them.” He had never been to New York and “I never knew what a pretzel was. I thought a pretzel was crunchy,” he says in a recent interview outside a cluster of very busy Food Network kitchens in New York. “My dad says, ‘If you’re such a fan of these pretzels, why don’t you own a pretzel business when we get back home?...
