Of all the unofficial holidays derived from an apocryphal bit police code, 4/20 is by far the most enduring. And just as “420” has gradually become entrenched as stoner shorthand for marijuana, the date April 20 has become an opportunity not just for college kids looking to indulge in a little extralegal fun, but also for drug law reformers and other advocacy groups to stump for a more reasonable national attitude toward America’s big green weed of choice.
And as marijuana laws have shifted over the years—from outright prohibition, to limited medicinal usage, to tightly regulated recreational use within certain states—marijuana themed movies have likewise evolved. Once upon a time, the only movies that even touched the subject of pot were hysterical propaganda pieces like Reefer Madness. Then, from the 1960s onward, weed became a popular (and hip) subject of broad comedy—in everything from Animal House to Annie Hall to Friday.

Don’t bogart that joint agreement, my friend. Weed-friendly comedian Doug Benson is suing his partners on the documentary “Super High Me,” claiming that they harshed his mellow by attempting to make a follow-up to the film against his will. In his suit, filed in federal court in California, the former host of Comedy Central’s “The Benson Interruption” claims that he formed Four Twenty Partners with DJ Paul, Alex Campbell and another partner to produce the documentary “Super High Me,” which “sought to document the effects of cannabis on Benson by following him through 30 straight days of cannabis-free living,...

Doug Benson's rambling pot-fueled documentaries are all basically just an excuse for the comic to get very high in different locations, but in the process of putting the latest one together, he and director Ryan Polito have put together something that captures Comic-Con in a very accurate and not romanticized way. This was a pretty solid year for me and Comic-Con, and so was last year. I enjoyed myself both times, so I guess technically I can't say I hate Comic-Con anymore, although that's been my mantra for a while. I think the accurate way of saying it is that I often hate elements of the experience of Comic-Con. There is a certain amount of hassle that goes with attendance that can just wear on you when you're trying to work, things that might never bother someone who is just attending for pleasure. It's easy to forget when you're...

Sure, original series like House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black get all the digital ink, but Netflix's strongest original programming lies in the incredible string of stand-up specials the service has premiered. Like HBO or Comedy Central before them, Netflix has become an outlet for long-form comedy for both established names (Aziz Ansari, Chelsea Handler, Marc Maron) and up-and-comers (Moshe Kasher, Jim Jeffries). Add comic and compulsive podcaster Doug Benson to that list of talent. His new special, Doug Dynasty, will be premiering on Netflix on Nov. 6. If you know Benson, it's either because you listen to...

Depending on your perspective, comedian Doug Benson is either best known as a movie aficionado (he hosts the hit podcast Doug Loves Movies) or as a comedic hero to weed smokers everywhere (he directed the hilarious documentary Super High Me and recently launched a video podcast called Getting Doug With High that features him getting stoned with comic friends).

Doug Benson, who starred in the ridiculous 2007 documentary Super High Me, has decided to make another movie, The Greatest Movie Ever Rolled. The premise? It's a film about raising money for the film itself, making it the Ouroboros of comedy documentaries. With such a wacky concept, it's natural for Benson's doc to find its home on the wacky world of the Internet. Sure enough, he is releasing it through the Chill Direct pay-to-view platform, where fans can access it for $7.99. Maria Bamford previous inaugurated Chill Direct with a comedy special of her own, and Benson now adds a more laid-back, smoky perspective to the platform's offerings. After all, this is the guy who starred in Super High Me, a marijuana-fueled take on Morgan Spurlock's Super Size Me, in which Benson smoked weed every day for 30 days and recorded the results. If Greatest Movie Ever Rolled's title and trailer are to be believed,...

Doug Benson is very funny. Whether or not you agree with the above statement is a good barometer of how you’ll feel about the perpetually inebriated comedian’s latest film, The Greatest Movie Ever Rolled. Unlike his previous effort, Super High Me, this one is akin to a Morgan Spurlock documentary in name only. This one follows Benson on tour with comedy partner Graham Elwood as they traverse through the American midwest. It’s not about smoking marijuana for 30 consecutive days, although that probably happens within the film. This movie is simply a road movie. Two comedians and the open road. Which is where it begins to rely heavily on how much you are entertained by these two men. From a technical standpoint, it’s a capably made documentary. Director Ryan Polito, whose major credits include a number of Taylor Swift concert films, has knack for keeping things naturalistic and cutting out a lot of the...

The past couple of years have seen an explosion of comedy podcasts, and in this week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly (on stands June 24), we profile the man behind one of the best and most-buzzed-about ones out there: stand-up comedian Marc Maron, whose twice-weekly podcast, Wtf, features fascinating and often astonishingly raw and intimate conversations with some of the biggest names in comedy (including Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Fallon, and Amy Poehler, among many others) — nearly all of them done in Maron’s cluttered garage in Los Angeles.

After months of promotion (it felt like years), "The Voice" finally premiered last night to huge numbers. During the show, the twitter-verse exploded, and tweet-shrapnel came from every which way, including Hollywood.
Meanwhile, the opening of "Thor" mightily approaches, and actress/singer Miley Cyrus wants in. While she's not billed for the film, Miley posted her own addition to the superhero epic. It's Monday, which means the internet is basking in the glow of yesterday's brand new episode of "Game of Thrones." If you went anywhere near a computer in the past 24 hours, you'd know that everybody had something to say about the HBO epic, but we found some celebrity commentary that was a wee-bit outside of the mainstream perspective.
Meanwhile, "Water For Elephants" opened in a strong third place at this weekend's box office, but has garnered mixed reviews. While Hollywood's fickle critics are split, the celebrity consensus is overwhelmingly positive, at least with a sample size of two.
And you know how we told you that a "Bill and Ted 3" script was just weeks away from completion? Turns out that it's already done, and it's in co-star Alex Winter's hands. Station!

With a new documentary about the life of Bill Hicks opening in New York City this weekend, it seemed like a good time to dig deeper into the world of documentaries about stand-up comedians. And, pending an thorough examination, this is what we found: there aren't a lot of good ones. Obviously there are plenty of concert films of stand-ups, just not a ton of docs about stand-ups, and most of the ones that do exist aren't very good. "American," which is smartly edited and constructed, is a fine exception. Here are five more:

Directed by: Adam Ross
Cast: Sefton
Running Time: 1 hr 25 mins
Rating: Unrated
Release Date: October 15, 2010 (limited)
Plot: Documents cannabis growers up and down the Emerald Triangle, an area in California famous for marijuana production.
Who’S It For? Teenagers and adults interested in the topic of marijuana legalization. While they’re sober.
Expectations: Most of what I know about the pot growers comes from the news and blog posts. I kind of expected it to be along the lines of Food, Inc or The Cove. I also thought it would be pro-marijuana legalization.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Sefton as himself: Most of the people who appear in the film are only identified by a title, such as “Business Owner” or “Cannabis Farmer.” Sefton is one of the only people identified by name, and it’s only his first name at that. But I also list him because he’s...

The big-news topics of discussion today were of course Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston's break-up redux and A-Rod's new home run benchmark, though, and those reactions have not been left out. Find out who you agree with and why Patton Oswalt wants to see "The Expendables" after the jump.
I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is Twitter-Wood for August 4, 2010.

I've got a great idea for a documentary. I will attempt to go a full year without wearing pants, as a film crew follows me and my goal and presents just how difficult such a wardrobe restriction makes my everyday life. Not interested? Is it because you know my blogging profession would not make it so hard to go 365 days without bottoms or because the task is not tied to some greater protest or cause? Probably a little of both, plus the fact that you'd have no interest in seeing a feature film of just me walking around pantsless.
But what other sort of restrictions or obstructions are there worth centering a documentary around? Something that's not just a stunt but also a form of activism, be it focused on Americans' health, the legality of drugs, being more environmentally conscious or some other such effort that could make a difference...

Have you been having Facebook problems lately? Lindsay Lohan has, judging from her recently tweeted frustrations. She says she's lost her original account and name, all due to some shenanigans pulled by a hacker.
The biggest shenanigan in the Gulf of Mexico is still on tweeters minds elsewhere in Twitter-Wood. Rainn Wilson was inspired by President Barack Obama's "kick ass" comments today, and Stephen Colbert has been pontificating as usual. You can decide which of them knows what he's talking about below alongside Wil Wheaton's kick-ass Tardis cake and a look at Gary Sinise playing guitar at Uso show.

Last week, Jon Favreau addressed "The Wilhelm Scream" in "Iron Man 2," and this week he's been getting inquiries about the color of Sam Rockwell's hands in the film. After reading Twitter today, I think I'm going to have to go back and decide how orange they are for myself.
In other tweets, much of Twitter-Wood is getting set for the Cannes Film Festival this week. Brett Ratner and Paris Hilton both had some prep work to do today, and I'm sure we'll be seeing plenty of other related posts over the next couple of weeks. You can find out what they've got planned after the jump. There, you'll find Gary Sinise, Jim Carrey and Frankie Muniz's thoughts on Lady Gaga, as they all appear in Twitter-Wood for May 11, 2010.

After two months of heated inter-office debate over the merits of different entries into our “SXSW Don’t Talk Celebrity Challenge,” we have finally determined a winner. With the prize set at Two Year-Long Free Admission Passes to the Alamo Ritz, South Lamar & Village, we wanted to be damn sure everyone would be satisfied with the winning video.
First, we want to say thanks to everyone who entered. There were really some great submissions (and potential Class A misdemeanors), and we appreciate the effort everyone made in the name of this good cause.
And the winner is…Filmmaker Gavin Dahl!
His Austin-Convention-Center-set Don’t Talk spot features comedians Doug Benson (Super High Me) and Nick Thune delivering the all-important public service announcement, but the bit the tipped the scales is a surprise cameo by none other than Brian Posehn (Comedians Of Comedy, Mr. Show, Sarah Silverman Program) which cracks our shit up every time.

'Last Airbender' Re-Shoots, 'Lost' Vs. 'Glee' And Chloe Moretz In 'Kick-Ass' In Today's Twitter-Wood
"The Last Airbender" gained at least one new actor in its final days of re-shoots, according to the tweets of Aasif Mandvi. He didn't indicate whether or not the last-minute casting was for a major part, but it sounds like everyone had a good time.
Many more Twitter-Wood citizens had a grand time at the "Kick-Ass" premiere last night, and several big-name attendees were particularly impressed with Hit-Girl actress Chloe Moretz. Eli Roth and Nathan Fillion were two of them. In other posts, Damon Lindelof did his best to sell "Glee" watchers on "Lost," Randy Newman's "Toy Story 3" scoring wrapped and David Wain went to the dentist. You can check out photographic evidence after the jump in Twitter-Wood for April 14th, 2010.

Words of war and peace were had between Ice-t and Aimee Mann over the last 24 hours. In an exchange unlike any other I've seen since I started writing Twitter-Wood, the singer/songwriter (and "Big Lebowski" actress) questioned Ice's acting abilities in a tweet she probably would have preferred to leave private. Ice-t caught wind, though, because as most Tw followers know, he as a small army in the Twitterverse.

Twitter-Wood had heaps of knowledge to impart today, and movie trivia collectors will want to take note of the "Clash of the Titans"/"Hot Fuzz" connection cited by Edgar Wright, as well as Emmy Rossum's real name. That's right, Emmy is short for something else, and I never would have had the spelling right in a million years were it not for her Twitter account.

Anyone who has ever made a trip to Sea World to see Shamu was undoubtedly shocked by news that one of the killer whales there attacked its trainer, resulting in her death. Some animal rights supporters think the whale shouldn't have be kept in captivity to begin with, and "Toxic Avenger" director Lloyd Kaufman appears to be one of them.

"Twilight" watchers now have their pitch for which contestant to support in the "American Idol" finals. Apparently Didi Benami and actress Rachelle LeFevre go way back. LeFevre had a lot of vocal support when Bryce Dallas Howard replaced her as Victoria for "Eclipse," so it may be interesting to see if her followers are also impressionable "Idol" voters.

Nothing stirs up emotions, name-dropping and unbridled snark in Hollywood quite like the Academy Awards nominations, and each of these behaviors was alive and well this morning as the official Oscar contenders for 2010 went public.
In the first few hours after the nominees were announced Twitter-Wood saw all of these reactions, and I've retweeted a collection below filled with Anna Kendrick's shock after seeing her Best Supporting Actress nomination for "Up in the Air," Lee Unkrich's wishes to the "Up" crew, Samm Levine's assessment of the eight nominations received by "Inglourious Basterds" and more. Comedy Central Records has announced the release of Doug Benson's comedy album. "Unbalanced Load" will hit stores on Tuesday, August 4.
The new album was recorded at the Punchline in San Francisco on April 20, 2009 - also known as 4/20 in the stoner community. Benson is hailed as one of the biggest pot comics around and co-wrote the off Broadway show "The Marijuana-Logues."
The comic is also known for his regular appearances on WH1's "Best Week Ever" and was a finalist on NBC's "Last Comic Standing." He also starred in the documentary "Super High Me" which saw Benson smoking pot continuously for 30 days.

"Twilight" and Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" successfully rocked Comic-Con today, as well as the Twitter-Wood feed. Burton brought special guest and Mad Hatter portrayer Johnny Depp on-stage as a surprise guest for his panel, which almost instantly turned him into a trending topic.

You may recall a little over a week ago when the Twitter-Wood feed and Emmy Rossum were left in suspense about the costume theme for Jessica Simpson’s birthday party. Maybe you're a raving pothead who runs around going "Dude, it's 4/20 today! Let's totally bake oooout!" Or maybe you're a non-partaker who still enjoys watching stoned people act silly. Doug Benson had an idea. For a man who smokes pot, that’s nothing new. But he did something unique for a marijuana smoker… he followed through on that idea. “Super High Me” is a documentary/comedy inspired by Morgan Spurlock’s “Super Size Me” with one very big twist. Benson smokes pot for 30 days straight to see what will happen. Morning, noon and night, Benson smokes. But first he goes completely sober (alcohol and pot) for a month and takes lung capacity tests, a physical and the SATs, which he then repeats during his pot month. I first interviewed Benson at SXSW where his film made its premiere. But then everything was stolen (notes, recorder, computer). Benson was cool enough to do the whole thing all over again...

UPDATED 5:06 p.m. PT March 10
AUSTIN -- Audiences eager to light up the joint with a viewing of the upcoming marijuana-themed documentary "Super High Me" will be able to do so in the privacy of their own living rooms.
Screen Media Films, which will distribute the film theatrically, made the announcement during a Studio SX interview panel at South by Southwest here.
Fans can register at the film's Web site to "roll" their own screenings by requesting a free DVD copy of the film, which will be sent out on the film's theatrical start date of April 20. Once in receipt of the disc, the requester is expected to hold a private screening in a location of their choosing. The only requirement is that they not charge for the screening.
"It can be difficult to get stoners off the couch," said Suzanne Blech, senior vp sales and acquisitions at Screen Media Films. "The number of people who get stoned in America is quite a large percentage, and all we want for them is to tell their friends that they have to see this funny, funny movie."
Blech said that the idea came about after she spoke with marketers at B-Side Entertainment, who had done a similar promotion with 2006's "Before the Music Dies".
"When they told me that they'd had 300 screenings in 270 markets with an average of 120 people at each, all done at a very low cost, I was intrigued about getting word-of-mouth screenings to such a large amount of people," she said.
