Rinty is off the base and Rusty's concerned. Boone and Rip believe Rinty may be in "love." He can't be opines Rusty, Rinty is a soldier. Rinty may be calling on a neighboring sheepdog. Rusty and Rip leave the fort to find out.
What they find at Mr. MacDonald's is a litter of puppies and they all look like Rinty. Mr. MacDonald is shooting at an eagle that is menacing his flock of sheep. All of the sheepherders have asked for a puppy, but Mr. Mac is holding one back for Rusty for his birthday. No one knows when Rusty has a birthday. Rip decides the troop should hold a party for Rusty, and they can use the date of Rip's birthday.
Boone is put in charge of organizing the party. Taken into town, Rusty picks gifts for Rip but they are really for Rusty. The one Rusty picks for Rip costs $5 and Rusty doesn't have that kind of money. Maybe he can work for Mr. Mac helping with the sheep. Obviously, Mr. Mac is in on the idea as he agrees to pay Rusty $7 for about four days' work.
On the first day, Rusty fights off an eagle to save a lamb; and he even pulls a feather off the eagle. Rusty considers giving the feather to Rip, but Mr. Mac says to be a gift, you had to be the one who got the feather. He tells Rusty about Rob Roy who went to a mountain top to get an eagle feather for his bonnet (cap), This feather told people that Rob Roy was a man.
Maybe Rusty thinks he might get a feather from the eagle harassing the sheep; but Mr. Mac objects to the idea of Rusty trying to get one. One of Rinty's pups is taken by the eagle and Rinty goes in search of the bird. After a treacherous cliff-side climb, Rusty gets to the nest first. He gets his feather and fights off the eagle with a branch. Rinty appears and jumps on the eagle killing it.
Rusty gives Rip the feather and Rip is proud to accept it. Then Rip gives Rusty a present and announces they are sharing the date from now on. Boone leads the troop and Major Swanson into Rip's quarters where Rusty gets additional presents.
