It is only through Plantagenet's efforts that he returns to public life. When reunited with Marie, he professes his gratitude and loves and proposes marriage. Madame Goesler also generously agrees to Glencora's suggestion that she anonymously give the penniless Adelaide and Maule the bequest of the Duke's jewelry to her to allow the young couple to get married. He has 24 hours decide whether or not to accept a cabinet post in Gresham's government, a government that is in imminent danger of falling, and he must break the news of his engagement to Laura.—duke1029@aol.com
- Finn's trial continues and Phineas' barrister, Mr. Chaffanbrass, presents the defense's arguments. The entire case seems to be going against Finn and he despairs at what the future may hold for him. Mrs. Max's efforts on his behalf pay off when she manages to produce a key witness in his defense. A free man once again, he knows where his feelings lie and asks Marie Goesler to marry him. Now engaged, he has the difficult task of informing Laura Kennedy, who is still very much in love with him. Now rehabilitated, Finn is offered his government old post of Under Secretary for the Colonies, but the government soon falls and the Liberals find themselves in opposition. Glencora meanwhile frets over the impending nuptials of cousin Adelaide Palliser. Gerard Maule's father has refused them permission to live at Maule Abbey and they are penniless.
