For the release of Richard Donner's "Superman: The Movie" in 1978, an ingenious ad campaign was launched that centered around promising audiences something no movie could hope to deliver. "You'll Believe A Man Can Fly," read the tagline on the one-sheets, supplemented by a beautifully evocative painting of clouds and the "S" shield logo. As audacious as this campaign was, it nonetheless was part of the ethos surrounding the film and the depiction of the titular character. While it's true that certain visual effects techniques were developed to make the flying sequences in "Superman" try and live up to such a promise, Donner knew that the element he really had to focus on was casting the part. If audiences believed in the man, they'd believe he was flying.

Nonfiction filmmaking duo Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui turned heads with their dazzling 2018 fashion doc McQueen, which gracefully walked the line between celebration and sorrow, between the public highs of a brilliant creator of wearable art and the private lows of a man plagued by insurmountable demons. They achieve a comparable balance in their moving new film, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, between the iconic movie star and the man whose life was stalled by a tragic accident. The big difference is that unlike Alexander McQueen, Reeve did manage to overcome long days of darkness and despair, living a productive life for his remaining years.
Late in the film, footage shows President Barack Obama in 2009 signing the Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Act, the bipartisan-supported first legislation specific to the millions of under-represented Americans living with spinal cord injuries and paralysis, named for the actor and his fellow activist wife.

There’s an iconic scene in 1978’s “Superman” of Clark Kent, played by Christopher Reeve, spying Lois Lane dangling from a helicopter. He locates a revolving door, emerges as the Man of Steel, and soars upward and catches a falling Lane.
“Easy, miss, I’ve got you,” says Superman. Lane is still panicking. “You’ve got me? Who’s got you?”
Superman smiles, offers a casual goodbye and flies off into the night, his forelock perfect. It’s the image the world held of Reeve until 1995. And that’s where Ian Bonhote and Peter Ettedgui’s new documentary, “Super/Man,” picks up a very different version of the hero’s journey.
Reeve is now paralyzed from the neck down after a fall from his horse. He cannot move, he cannot soar. His wife, Dana, tends to him and then talks of seeking out towels fresh from the dryer so she...

How does one prepare to play a pop icon? According to Evan Rachel Wood, it’s all about the facts.
Wood plays Madonna in the Roku Channel’s “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” opposite Daniel Radcliffe as the parody singer himself. The film premiered at 2022 TIFF, where Wood exclusively told IndieWire that meeting Madonna over the years helped prepare her for the role.
“I love Madonna,” the “Rising Phoenix” activist said. “I’ve met her before. We’ve been very friendly. So I think we’re cool. I’m hoping we’re cool.”
She added, “The good news is nothing in this movie actually happened, so I’m a little safe there.”
Plus, Wood is doubtful that Madonna will address her portrayal of her short-lived romance with Weird Al, who co-wrote and produced the film. “I don’t think she’s going to respond at all,” Wood said. “She has...

This is what pretty much every survivor that tries to expose someone in a position of power goes though, and this is part of the retaliation that keeps survivors quiet. This is why people don’t want to come forward. This was expected.”

Rising Phoenix, a new film about the Paralympics, features disabled rappers on its soundtrack. It’s just a dope song, they say, for the human spirit

Beginning not least with the cancellation of the Olympic Games in Japan, 2020 has been a year unprecedentedly devoid of sporting events. Though there’s been a slow return to normal there’s still no live audience, stadiums are mostly empty, and many athletes were left to hang up hopes after endless training. Enter “Rising Phoenix,” “McQueen” team Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui’s . While it doesn’t capture the same excitement of a live competition, the filmmakers damn well try, intercutting intelligently art-designed interviews with flashy visual symbolism, ethereal reenactments, and frequently nail-shredding archival footage from Paralympic Games of the past.
Narrated by Paralympics advocate Prince Harry, “Rising Phoenix” will probably introduce you to some of the Paralympics’ most famous figures, and the disabilities that have become a tremendous asset in their respective fields, from skiing while blind and fencing in a wheelchair. You may recognize Tatyana McFadden, a Russian-American Paralympic celebrity who,...

Netflix has added a decent haul of new content today. Wednesday, August 26th has brought four new movies and two new TV series to the streaming service. These include an acclaimed independent film, an inspiring documentary, two Netflix original series and a making-of feature on one of the site’s most popular shows.
For starters, today sees Making The Witcher go up on Netflix, a half-hour documentary that goes behind the scenes of the recent first season of the hit fantasy drama starring Henry Cavill. Season 2, if you’re wondering, is due sometime in 2021, though it’s been delayed – as has everything – by the pandemic.
The other two Netflix Originals that went live today are Colombian crime drama Her Mother’s Killer and reality show Million Dollar Beach House.
Here’s the full list:

A celebration of the Paralympics movement and its heroes, Netflix’s “Rising Phoenix,” which debuts Aug. 26, gives sports fans a jolt of greatness, inspiration, history and drop-dead gorgeous photography.
Directors Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui (“McQueen”) zero in on what makes athletes special: Their work ethic and determination. Some of the featured athletes include Matt Stutzman, an archery champion who was born without arms and uses his feet to shoot; Tatyana McFadden, a wheelchair racer who was told she couldn’t compete in high school; or Ellie Cole, a swimmer with one leg who continues to break records.
Besides McFadden, Cole and Stutzman, the film also features fencer Bebe Vio, sprinter Jonnie Peacock, runner Jean-Baptiste Alaize, powerlifter Cui Zhe, wheelchair rugby player Ryley Batt and South African track athlete Ntando Mahlangu.
The tenets of determination, positivity and motivation are threaded through the doc.
