Netflix’s Squid Game rose to immense popularity at the height of the pandemic when people were just staying at home and enjoying television shows. The thrill of the story and the compelling cast certainly contributed to the success of the franchise.

In the final episode of Squid Game: The Challenge, the three finalists swapped their green tracksuits for button-downs and devoured a steak dinner on a triangular-shaped table, much like the dining hall featured in Netflix’s scripted drama Squid Game. Instead of a deadly knife fight, the two final contestants, Player 451 Phill Cain and Player 287 Mai Whelan, played the child’s game Rock, Paper, Scissors to determine the winner of the $4.56 million prize. Whelan, who bragged that the hand game was a personal favorite, was ultimately crowned.

This article contains spoilers for Squid Game: The Challenge through episode 10.
Squid Game became a global hit for many reasons: its bloody violence, its scathing criticism of late-stage capitalism, its Jung Ho-yeon, and so on. But perhaps the most underrated reason is the most obvious: its games.
Never before has the survival horror genre depicted lovingly-crafted high stakes versions of children’s games quite like Squid Game. When it came time for Netflix to adapt the show into reality competition Squid Game: The Challenge, it obviously couldn’t include murder, capitalistic critique, or Jung Ho-yeon. It could, however, include those games. So it did.
Squid Game: The Challenge is full of contests that should be familiar to dedicated Squid Game fans. It also tosses in a few new curveballs to keep the players on their toes. Here you can find every game that Netflix’s Squid Game reality series has staged so far,...

We shouldn’t be allowed to call “Squid Game” dystopian now that Netflix has built the torment nexus, but the sheer scale of the streamer’s new reality series, “Squid Game: The Challenge,” is impressive. Big reality elimination challenge shows like “Survivor,” “Big Brother,” and “The Amazing Race” feature contestants in the double, not triple, digits. While “Squid Game: The Challenge” settles on squibs instead of actual bullets, the logistical hurdles involved in blowing up narrative sequences and making them practical as games — for hundreds of players — are legion.
Filmed over 16 days at a series of six interconnected studios in London, “Squid Game: The Challenge” features representations of the unnervingly cheerful “Squid Game” work of production designer Chae Kyoung-sun and the iconic costumes created by designer Jo Sang-gyeong, as well as inclusion of composer Jung Jae-il’s score and a penchant for recreating the deliciously painful slo-mo editing of games perfected by editor Nam Na-young.

The hottest show of the fall is gearing up for its exciting finale, but will Player 016 (Sam), Player 287 (Mai) or Player 451 (Phill) be named the ultimate winner of “Squid Game: The Challenge”? The Netflix reality TV show concludes on Wednesday, December 6, with one person about to become $4.56 million richer. Gold Derby asked the show’s fans to tell us who they are rooting for to prevail, and we can now reveal the poll results:
49% — Player 287 (Mai)
32% — Player 451 (Phill)
19% — Player 016 (Sam)
See‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ spoilers: Winners, losers and fan-favorites
By far, Mai has been featured more on the show than the other two finalists, thanks in part to her initial mistrust (and later apology) to Player 182 (Tj). And of course, who could forget Mai going after Player 278 (Ashley) in the “Die Test” because she saw her as disloyal for the way she acted toward Player 301 (Trey) in the “Glass Bridge” challenge?...

With a whopping 456 contestants to keep track of, “Squid Game: The Challenge” is officially the biggest reality TV competition show of all time. One by one, and often in groups, that enormous number will be whittled down to only a single person, and they’ll walk away with exactly $4.56 million, the largest cash prize in television history. If you’re having trouble keeping your 287s separate from your 278s, you’ve come to the right place. Note that the Top 9 players are placed in their finishing order, while the others are listed according to their three-digit numbers.

“Squid Game: The Challenge” has to literalize, at human scale, the games the original Hwang Dong-hyuk series takes an (understandably) limited, narrative perspective through. It’s both a production design and game design problem to solve: How much space do 456 people need to play a game of red light/green light? How can you build a glass bridge that’s safe enough to jump on but high enough to hurl into an abyss the players who fail?
Even the smallest details — like creating a Dalgona cookie recipe that was of a uniform thickness and consistency — took almost 20 tries to get right. But the way that “Squid Game: The Challenge” realizes its games is also illustrative of how all reality game shows organize their challenges and the qualities that make them so appealing to watch.
Some of the “Squid Game” challenges weren’t possible to pull off in real life or needed to be structurally rethought.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read unless you’ve seen the first five episodes of Squid Game: The Challenge on Netflix.
Anyone who’s tuned into Netflix’s exhilarating reality show version of Squid Game was no doubt moved by the plight of Spencer Hawkins, aka Player 299 — the poor dude whose team got stuck with having to extricate umbrellas in the Dalgona cookie challenge.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hawkins said his decision to join Squid Game: The Challenge was actually based on how he was a cancer survivor, not that he was obsessed with the South Korean thriller that dropped on Netflix in 2021.
“I wasn’t a diehard fan,” he admitted. “The biggest reason I signed up for the show was a few years ago I recovered from cancer, and with that I became much more intentional about the things I wanted in my life, meaning deep human connections and unique experiences.

A British solicitors is threatening to sue Netflix over alleged injuries sustained by contestants during filming of Squid Game: The Challenge.
Leaving aside the question of whether Squid Game: The Challenge entirely misses the darkly satirical point of the show on which it’s based, it sounds as though Netflix may one day come to regret commissioning the show in the first place.
A story at The Hollywood Reporter reveals that a British firm of solicitors – which specialises in injury claims – is on the cusp of filing a lawsuit against the streaming giant. Express Solicitors claims that several contestants on the game show have sustained injuries during filming, and that its producers “pushed the boundaries of safety in the name of entertainment.”
Those injuries are said to include “hypothermia and nerve damage” which, the lawyers say, arose as a “result of poor health and safety standards on set.”

At least a couple of the 456 contestants in Squid Game: The Challenge have taken a first step toward filing a lawsuit against the Netflix reality competition, alleging that they “suffered injuries such as hypothermia and nerve damage as a result of poor health and safety standards on set.”
Daniel Slade, Chief Executive Officer (Legal) at Express Solicitors (a personal injury firm based out of the UK), said in a statement that Squid Game: The Challenge players — two so far, by one account — have asked for help seeking compensation for injuries they allegedly suffered during the show’s filming in January of this year.

‘Squid Game: The Challenge’: Contestants Called Filming Conditions ‘Ridiculous’ and Like a ‘Warzone’
The real-life Squid Game might not be as deadly as its fictional counterpart, but filming wasn’t exactly a pleasant experience, according to some participants. Squid Game: The Challenge — Netflix’s reality show version of the mega-popular Korean scripted series – debuted on Nov. 22. The show features hundreds of participants competing for a $4.56 million prize, the largest in reality show history. While there are no grisly eliminations, some contestants say their experience on the show was far more intense than they expected.

From the very moment Squid Game: The Challenge was announced, there’s been a recurring criticism of the show’s very existence. The reality competition is based on Netflix’s hit drama series and has 456 players competing in dystopian kids games for a record-breaking $4.56 million prize. The show is arguably the most cinematic reality series ever shot (trailer below), and hugely ambitious — it looks and plays just like the original drama series that captivated viewers around the globe in 2021. The competition’s 10 episodes drop on the streamer today.
As stated in The Hollywood Reporter’s recent review: “The original Squid Game, the competition stood as an extreme example of the dehumanization of capitalism … The Challenge builds on the most superficial aspects of Squid Game while ditching — or, really, undermining — the most profound.”
But in a new interview with THR, Studio Lambert executive producers Stephen Lambert, Tim Harcourt and John Hay respond to that claim.

Studio Lambert has introduced the world to Gogglebox, Race Across the World and The Circle but the indie has faced its greatest test in Netflix’s Squid Game: The Challenge, and the road has been a bit of a bumpy one.
Stephen Lambert’s 15-year-old British production house, which its founder says is having its busiest year following a strategic shift to “go big” on premium unscripted, took on its grandest undertaking when Netflix gave it the weighty reins to the Squid Game competition series.

Actor Ted Raimi loves horror so much that he’s dedicated much of his career to it, providing fans with an endless array of memorable characters from Evil Dead II’s Henrietta to last year’s morally complex Travis Hackett in video game The Quarry.
Up next for the horror stalwart is Failure!, an ambitious, violent thriller premiering this Sunday under the Fantastic Pavilion at this year’s Cannes’ Marché du Film.
In Failure!, Ted Raimi produces and stars as a man forced to choose between financial ruin and murder with little time to process, resulting in a crime thriller that delivers on violence. That’s burying the lede, however, as Raimi’s latest takes on the daunting task of capturing this moral conundrum through one single take.
Ted Raimi exclusively spoke with Bloody Disgusting about Failure!, detailing the challenges of making a single-take feature-length thriller.

In news that can be filed under "disappointing but not surprising," Variety is reporting that filming for Netflix's "Squid Game" reality show has taken a dark turn. The outlet spoke to several contestants whose names were kept anonymous about their experiences filming the show's first challenge in late January. While "Squid Game: The Challenge" isn't a real-life bloodbath like its fictional counterpart, accounts shared from the set paint a picture of a nonetheless dangerous production.
The challenge in question was filmed on January 23, 2023 in Bedford, England, amidst a cold snap that left temperatures hovering around 32 F. In an attempt to mimic the massive thriller hit "Squid Game," the production reportedly asked contestants to play a game of "Red Light, Green Light," the kids' party game that requires freezing in place before dashing towards a finish line. Netflix has defended freezing cold conditions on an outdoor U.K. set where its real-life Squid Game unscripted series saw contestants sustain injuries while competing as winter temperatures plunged below zero.
On Wednesday, the streamer and its co-producers pushed back on claims in The Sun tabloid newspaper that players had been severely injured during production on a former air force base near Bedford, in England’s eastern region, during a rare cold snap.
“We care deeply about the health and safety of our cast and crew, and invested in all the appropriate safety procedures. While it was very cold on set — and participants were prepared for that — any claims of serious injury are untrue,” Netflix and Studio Lambert, which is co-producing Squid Game: The Challenge along with The Garden, said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

Contestants on Netflix’s real-life version of Squid Game have spoken out about conditions on the set, with several reportedly leaving in tears and one taken out on a stretcher.
The platform is currently filming a game show in the UK based on the smash hit Korean drama, about desperate members of the public taking part in a deadly competition.
Participants in this real-life, non-fatal version are competing for £3.7m, the largest lumpsum jackpot in the history of reality TV.
According to The Sun, contestants spent several hours in freezing temperatures of -3C, with the rules of one game, “Red Light, Green Light”, demanding that players stand completely still.
One player told the publication: “Even if hypothermia kicked in, then people were willing to stay for as long as possible because a lot of money was on the line. Too many were determined not to move so they stood there for far too long.

Netflix’s televised revolution began in earnest in February 2013, when the machiavellian political schemer Frank Underwood looked straight into the camera and casually snapped a dog’s neck. It was the first episode of House of Cards – a 100m TV series that would only be available on the Internet.
The show represented a huge risk for the streaming service as it sought to make the leap from tech start-up to entertainment industry goliath.
Nine years on and the gamble has paid off. Netflix was a major winner at the Emmys, its haul of 23 awards attesting to its power-player status. And while House of Cards quickly descended into potboiler nonsense (with leading star Kevin Spacey being fired from the series after sexual assault allegations), Netflix has rumbled on. Here are 65 of its most essential shows.

No need to send out a search party for the “Searchin’ My Soul” singer. It’s true that Vonda Shepard has kept a low profile of late, not just during the pandemic but for a few years before it, not having released an album of new material since 2015’s “Rookie.” But she’s back with her 13th studio album, “Red Light, Green Light,” titled in part for the stop-and-go feelings a lot of us might have experienced during the past two and a half years. For Shepard at least, who has touring dates now lined up on the east coast and in Europe to follow the new release, all systems are go, again.

We talked to Chae as part of our “Meet the Experts” panel of Emmy nominated production designers. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
