January sees the launch of Blumhouse’s ‘haunted swimming pool’ movie, Night Swim. Catch a look here.
In the midst of the prestigious awards contenders that we get at the turn of the year, one of the more fun aspects to the annual movie merry-go-round is Blumhouse’s first horror flick of the year. Over the last four years, the horror house’s early-in-the-year release has given us such delights as M3GAN, The Invisible Woman and The Vigil, an underrated horror thriller, if you haven’t yet seen it.
Early 2024 is set to bring us Night Swim, a Blumhouse production that looks to be in the campier style of M3GAN as opposed to the other two films we’ve just mentioned. The project is one of the first collaborations between James Wan’s production company Atomic Monster and Blumhouse Productions at Universal Pictures.

Nearly every culture in the world has contributed to the horror genre at one point or another, but it’s pretty clear that Hollywood is still the de facto capital of genre filmmaking. That’s why it makes sense that most popular horror tropes and monsters are based on traditional western mythology and religions, as these films are usually made by – and meant to appeal to – a certain demographic.
However, dealing with the same old ghouls and possessions can get old after a hundred and thirty years of cinema, and that’s why we’re lucky that some filmmakers decide to incorporate elements from lesser-known cultures into their scary stories. Whether it’s a foreign film daring to apply the “Hollywood” treatment to a local monster or a north American production taking inspiration from international legends (like Bishal Dutta’s recent It Lives Inside), some of the best horror experiences...

It was only a matter of time before “Black Mirror” came for the streaming industry, and Season 6 takes a couple of swings directly at Netflix right out of the gate. First with the star-studded, hyper-meta episode “Joan Is Awful,” which introduces the Netflix clone Streamberry (and an arsenal of Easter eggs and references therein). But Episode 2, “Loch Henry,” quiets things down to tackle a much more specific streaming ill — the soulless, exploitative true crime industrial complex and the constant stream of true crime docs digging up traumas from the past.
“Loch Henry” follows an aspiring filmmaker back to his Scottish hometown, where he intends to make a documentary about eggs, only to get sucked into making a film about the horrific crime case that transformed his hometown from a former tourist destination into a desolate ghost town. In “Black Mirror” tradition, the ensemble is a healthy mix of familiar faces,...

Like most hardcore horror fans, Guillermo del Toro loves a good anthology series. From "The Twilight Zone" to "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," which del Toro produced, the notion of getting a completely different tale of terror each week is too tantalizing to resist. So genre fans should be giddily anticipating the October 25, 2022, Netflix premiere of "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities," which boasts eight episodes of spine-tingling fright from some of the most talented horror directors working today.
In the newly released teaser, del Toro promises, "Each of the episodes has a whole world." Though he is presenting the series, he has given all eight directors free rein to tell their stories on their own creative terms. Perhaps the most exciting element of the series is its focus on the construction of "beautiful, practical creatures." In an industry where CG dominates, it's an absolute joy to hear...

Hollywood has gone through so many Stephen King films that it's circling back to remake King movies that have already been adapted for the silver screen (see "It" and also "Pet Sematary"), but can you blame them? The man knows how to craft a terrifying story. The most recent King remake to hit theaters is "Firestarter," which is helmed this time around by director Keith Thomas ("The Vigil") and comes from the folks at Universal and Blumhouse. And it's that magical Blumhouse connection that made the score for the new film a little extra special.

A family on the run, a little girl with immense powers she doesn’t understand and can barely control, and an evil covert organization desperate to harness the girl’s power for their own good. This is Firestarter, a new adaptation of the Stephen King classic from the director of The Vigil, Keith Thomas. This version trades some of the more explosive – pun intended – elements of the 1984 film for pathos, which saps a lot of the energy out of the story, and left this viewer wondering why he just wasn’t feeling anything by the end. Thomas’s new take on Firestarter is something of a frustrating experience. Obviously a lower budget affair than it’s 1984 predecessor, this version seems to have all of the elements...

"Firestarter" is one of Stephen King's more medium-sized epics. Still, turning the +500 pages family horror drama into 90-minute thriller is a herculean task. To do so, director Keith Thomas and screenwriter Scott Teems focus largely on the central chase, with Charlie (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) and Andy McGee (Zac Efron) on the run from shadowy government figures. There's a lot of material from the book hinted at and suggested, but for Thomas, he felt the best way to adapt King was simply to get the characters right.
The author himself signed off on the director after seeing Thomas' previous movie, "The Vigil." Now, Thomas...

Firestarter doesn’t exactly have a legacy to uphold. Stephen King’s 1980 novel is not considered one of his signature works. Derivative of Carrie (1974), but without its emotional depth and horror, the novel is a pulpy and fitfully entertaining mess. But its pyrokinetic heroine and the suspenseful chase structure could lend themselves to a gripping film adaptation. And maybe one day, they will.
The latest adaptation of Firestarter, however, isn’t it. Both an adaptation of the novel and a remake of the largely derided 1984 film, the movie is a disappointing endeavor hampered by a weak script, lifeless acting, and unconvincing special effects. A few atmospheric and technical flourishes keep it from being a total dumpster fire, but the spark just isn’t there.
The film starts with an intriguing credits sequence, observing young Andy McGee (Zac Efron) and his wife, Vicky (Sydney Lemmon), as they volunteer for a medical...

When he's not chilling at home playing video games and watching NBA basketball, cherished cult director John Carpenter has kept busy of late composing horror film scores with his son Cody Carpenter. The duo teamed up with Daniel A. Davies to create the invigorating synth music for "Halloween" (2018) and its sequel, 2021's "Halloween Kills," and look to reunite once again for the final entry in David Gordon Green's slasher trilogy, 2022's "Halloween Ends."
Ahead of that, the three have re-teamed to craft the score for "Firestarter." Directed by Keith Thomas ("The Vigil") from a script by Scott Teems ("Halloween Kills"), the film adapts Stephen King's 1980 novel about...

Of all the Stephen King adaptations, Mark L. Lester’s “Firestarter” is hardly the most celebrated. The 1984 original, starring a young Drew Barrymore as a pyrokinetic child, has some impressive visual effects, but it’s narratively thin, thematically clunky, and marred by the offensive casting of George C. Scott as Rainbird, a Cherokee assassin.
Needless to say, remaking “Firestarter” is not, in itself, such a bad idea. There was certainly room for improvement.
One can only applaud the new filmmakers for casting indigenous actor Michael Greyeyes in the Rainbird role, but somehow the improvements stop there. The new “Firestarter” is a lot like the old “Firestarter,” if the old “Firestarter” was duller, cheaper, and devoid of almost all meaning.
Ryan Kiera Armstrong (“Black Widow”) stars as Charlie McGee, a young girl with a big secret: She can make fire with her mind. Her parents Andy (Zac Efron) and Vicky also...

Bloody Disgusting’s Firestarter review is spoiler-free. The Stephen King renaissance continues with a modern adaptation of his 1980 novel, Firestarter. Considering the lackluster response to the 1984 adaptation, it’s likely long overdue. But the real question is whether there’s any thematic depth or storytelling to mine amidst superhero cinema’s current oversaturation and popularity. While The Vigil director Keith Thomas does […]

After dominating the box office last weekend with 84 of the entire weekend’s gross, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will remain the major story in its second frame. The Marvel Cinematic Universe film, which opened to 187 million, crossed 200 million on Monday (not to mention 500 million worldwide on Tuesday), and it is on the verge of besting the first Doctor Strange’s 233 million domestic cume. By the end of the weekend it should be past or very close to 300 million, with its next milestone being the 369 million gross of The Batman, the biggest thus far this year and the second biggest since the start of the pandemic.
Where it goes from there is the question. Doctor Strange 2 opened within spitting distance of Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War, and we may not know for another week or two whether its final gross will end up closer...

This upcoming weekend, Marvel Studios’ latest superhero epic, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” will continue to run rampant at the box office, and it’s likely to be the #1 movie for quite some time, or at least until “Top Gun: Maverick” opens over Memorial Day weekend.
On Friday, Universal Pictures is releasing Blumhouse Pictures’ take on Stephen King’s best-selling thriller “Firestarter,” but it’s not just opening in roughly 3,300 theaters – it will also get a day-and-date release on its Peacock streaming service. The new movie stars Ryan Kiera Armstrong from “American Horror Story” as young Charlie McGee, the titular girl with pyrokinetic powers, while Zac Efron plays her father. It’s directed by Keith Thomas, who helmed the previous Blumhouse movie, “The Vigil.”
The decision for Universal to do day-and-date streaming is an odd one, just because there isn’t much direct competition other than “Doctor Strange.

Here's the trailer for the updated interpretation of Stephen King's 1980 novel Firestarter. Firestarter is coming to cinemas and will stream simultaneously on Peacock on May 13th. First, Zac Efron is now old enough to be playing dad roles, specifically one that asks of him to have sired a child ten years ago. Second, we like the nod to the 1984 film in the poster layout. Third, it looks good. Pretty much on point with the emotions and the fire and the screaming. Directed by Keith Thomas (The Vigil) and written by Scott Teems this new film was produced by horror powerhouse Blumhouse along with Weed Road Pictures. Also in this mix our friend, cinematographer Karim Hussain...

Stephen King is haunting us with an explosive new nightmare, "Firestarter," a Blumhouse and Universal film from director Keith Thomas ("The Vigil"). The story follows a young girl with pyrokinetic powers, desperately evading capture from a government agency that wants to use her gift as a weapon. If this sounds a little familiar and your mind is resurfacing memories of other stories with shady government agencies and little girls on the run, then you're certainly on the right track. "Firestarter" was a source of inspiration for the Duffer Brothers when they began developing "Stranger Things," and even gets a couple of...

Universal already had May 13 this year reserved for a Blumhouse movie, and it turns out that’s Firestarter. The movie will go day-and-date on Peacock too as the streamer needs to up its paid subscriber count. Firestarter is the only wide theatrical release on May 13, and follows the weekend after Disney/Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
This is the fourth Universal theatrical release to go day-and-date on Peacock after The Boss Baby: Family Business, Blumhouse/Miramax’s Halloween Kills and this weekend’s romantic comedy Marry Me starring Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson. It’s technically five NBCUniversal movies going theatrical day-and-date on Peacock this year, if you count the upcoming release of Focus Features’ Sundance acquisition Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul, which has yet to set a date.
As of this minute, it’s questionable whether a Peacock availability of a movie shaves off...

Blumhouse Productions’ adaptation of the Stephen King novel “Firestarter” has gotten a release date and a first trailer. The film will hit theaters and Peacock on May 13.
Starring Zac Efron and Sydney Lemmon as parents Andy and Vicky, the story follows them on the run as they attempt to hide their daughter Charlie (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) from the government. Charlie has pyrokinetic abilities and, naturally, a sketchy agency wants to use her and her powers as a weapon.
Charlie’s powers tend to burst out in moments of anger or pain, but her father has taught her how to defuse it, at least temporarily. But as Charlie turns 11, her fire becomes harder and harder to control.
When Charlie accidentally gives up her family’s hiding place, a mysterious operative (Michael Greyeyes) is sent out to hunt down the family and take Charlie.
You can watch the first trailer for “Firestarter” in the video above.

Though Marvel has decided to consolidate all of its cinematic universe offerings onto Disney+, some outliers still live on for other streaming services. In May 2021, Hulu is set to premiere the latest non-canon Marvel series.
The animated comedy Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere on May 21 and stars Patton Oswalt as the titular Marvel villain.
