- Clarksdale, MS in 1936, Ike and his mother witness the brutal abduction of his father by a white mob, who falsely accuse him of assaulting a white woman. Izear Luster Turner is later left for dead in his front yard after being beaten to a pulp and denied medical treatment due to his race. Years later, a married woman hires Ike to do yard work, but soon reveals that she desires more than just his labor. For several months, she seduces the underage musician, leaving a lasting impact on his psyche. Despite these traumatic experiences, Ike's musical talent continues to flourish, and he and his high school friends form a band inspired by the sounds of Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller. During his time as a teenage disc jockey at a local radio station, Ike has the opportunity to meet the legendary blues musician B.B. King. Ike and several members of the band form King Of Rhythm, dominating the city with their electrifying performances. A young Elvis is left in awe as he feels the pulsating rhythm of the group.
Record promoter Sam Phillips and the band celebrate their first recording, "Rocket 88". However, Ike feels betrayed by Sam as the album is released under The Delta Cats, featuring Jackie Brenston instead of The Kings Of Rhythm, featuring Jackie Brenston. Furious, Ike leaves the group and moves to Memphis, where he works as a scouting agent for Sam Phillips. It is there that he discovers legendary musicians such as Muddy Waters, Little Walter, and Bobby Blue Bland.
Ike's girlfriend complains about living with Momma B and demands to move to a more exciting city. Ike explodes with anger when she reveals that she has no interest in caring for his sick mother.
After Momma B's passing, several musicians attend her funeral. Ike goes through multiple relationships before finally meeting Ann Mae Bullock (Tina), with whom he begins working. The group's name is changed to The Ike and Tina Turner Revue, which becomes highly successful. Eventually, the two marry.
Ike's descent into drug addiction causes him to lose sight of his talent and music, leading to his arrest for armed robbery and subsequent imprisonment. Yet, this turns out to be a turning point for him as he finds spiritual fulfillment during his incarceration. Upon his release, Ike forms a new group and works hard to revive his career. However, his relapse into drug use results in his untimely death.
