Good idea for a film completely wasted
szymon-526-33789010 May 2024
I just watched Parallax encouraged by reviews, both here and elsewhere, and I'm terribly dissappointed. Is this somekind of a guerilla marketing campaign with all those 9/10 reviews? The movie is based on an interesting collage of, let's say, a bunch of fuzzy reality ideas. None of them are actually original, I'll skip details to avoid spoilers but suffice to say we know them already from other films. However, if delivered properly this could have been a good experience nonetheless. Unfortunately this did not happen and the only good things I find in this film are the lead actress performance and music. Cinematography could also deserved praising if only they have not decided on reusing just a handful of identical shots almost in a repeating pattern. All actors' performance is bad (except for the lead one) and dialogs are unrealistic. The storyline is very slow, maybe even boring but that's not the problem, there are lots of movies that are probably too slow but overall turn out very good. The bad part here is that for the 3/4 of a movie it keeps the same slow pace and is generally consistent in it, only to suddenly change into some lower-then-B-grade student's action movie in the end. Did the screenwriter's dog ete their only copy of a script book a night before shooting and they had to improvise or something? Seriously, the director and the screewriter should consider career change - I believe it is the same person so that explains why we've got so many issues related to acting, dialogs and plot at once in this film.

I guess everyone who worked on the movie reviewed it !
davesykes8 May 2024
That's the only logical explanation for the exaggerated rating of this "movie''. The movie tries to be all metaphysical and mysterious but it ends up being long and boring.

I had a hard time finishing it.

The acting is mediocre. The 2 main actors are like High school level actors. The dialogue is laughable and so poorly delivered that it made me uncomfortable. Seriously, don't waste your time watching this one, may as well re-watch one of your favourite movies than this snooze fest. Clearly one of the hardest movie I've suffered through. I know all I've written is the opposite of the other 14 reviews but, Hey...I didn't work on this movie.

Thought Provoking and Unique
dtminasian2 February 2023
This film had me thinking for days after. Really incredible and interesting cinematography and plot. You can tell there is so much passion, care, and detail devoted so every aspect of the movie.

There's a lot more than meets the eye behind this film. Upon taking a closer look you will see the efforts they went to in working with limited variates in sets. The main apartment itself was utilized in interesting ways to prevent it from feeling visually stale.

Also, the scene of Naomi drowning in water in her reoccurring dreams seemed like it could have easily been taken out of a multi million dollar feature.

Overall, this film is worth your time and attention.

Not an Indie film person but WOW!
poonamsheevam1 May 2023
I'm just your average movie going person so I can't say much about the lighting or camera work but I can confidently say I did enjoy this film.

The content: I was a little lost at the beginning but the initial confusion ends up being a part of the film's build up so give the film a little time!

The acting: The leading and supporting actresses, in my opinion, were the most developed in their characters and their acting.

Overall: Not sure how to properly rank but since I enjoyed myself and have zero complaints I'm giving it a 10. I also loved that the film covered mental health in a more sci-fi way. Combined two topics I love!

A tantalizing plot with a stellar performance by the lead actress!
zachtwberg22 January 2023
At first, I wasn't really sure where the story was going. Shots and scenes felt jarring an disconnected. But it quickly becomes obvious that was by design. As the narrative picked up steam, I became fully immersed in the cinematic language the director and cinematographer had developed.

Naomi Prentice delivers an enthralling performance as our lead. It is an incredibly difficult challenge for an actor to keep an audience engaged with a seemingly emotionless character. And yet, there is an element to this performance that is deeply emotional.

If you want to watch something that will surprise you, definitely check this one out.

A Cerebral Indie Sci-Fi
themichaelthomas1 March 2023
Parallax is a strong first outing by writer/director Michael Bachochin. This micro-budget indie sci-fi slowly unfolds into a paced psychological mystery that does not tread a path you would expect. This is a paced film, philosophic and articulate, with surprising moments that will leave thinking about theme and meaning.

Fine performances here from Naomi Prentice and Nelson Ritthaler who carry the narrative throughout. Some of the elements are at once arthouse and philosophical, and as it all started coming together I found it quite engaging. I look forward to the next production from Bachochin.

A Visually Stunning Film with Offers Insight on Mental Health
tianacbarajas-0589426 January 2023
Parallax has all the elements that makes a film captivating. It has action, plot twists, science fictional happenings, great cinematography, a stunning performance by an ensemble cast! What's not to like?

It doesn't fail to bring on the chaos throughout Naomi Price's character's journey and every scene with her in it makes me wish we could have more of her mystery in my daily life. We are left in a state of wonder to decipher for ourselves what the director intended. When I see an actor in this industry that can transport me into the story and their rollercoaster of a ride, I see it as a success in storytelling.

As for the overview of what the story is like, think inception meets Mr. Robot meets a mental health crisis. Insane, intricate, eye capturing, we love it all 💕

A work of art and an amazing film to be watched!

Highly recommend if you want a thriller that keeps you on your toes!

Great Post-2020 Psych-Thriller
kmbrasher-1994626 January 2023
I'm not a film critic, so I may not be able to fully articulate why I enjoyed this film and believe it does a good job of putting you in a mind-space of disarray.

The acting from the lead is wonderful, and she does a great job of conveying a confused painter who finds special solace in her work.

The story is a bit chopped up and everywhere, but I believe that's purposefully done, to put the viewer in a similar state as Naomi, the main character.

The Cinematography is also used in aiding the story's sense of confusion and unease. Shots are framed in unfamiliar ways creating a dissonance for viewers. Visual cues for when and where shots take place are subtly laid into the background giving the viewer something to ground against once the story has set the stage and gets rolling.

If you enjoy Indie Thrillers, I would recommend this film for sure. The psychological aspects hit strongly after experiencing COVID lockdown.

Striking Visuals and Strong Performances
chase34811 May 2023
Parallax is a beautifully shot sci-fi thriller that contains many thought-provoking concepts on mental health. The opening scenes, in which we come to understand the depressive state of the main character, Naomi, are both chilling and heart-wrenching.

For such a low budget film, the cinematography really stands out. The imagery in the water scenes were especially captivating.

But by far, the highlight of film was the performances by the lead actress, Naomi Prentice, and supporting actress, Hattie Smith. Their chemistry was palpable and made the emotional beats of the film all the more poignant.

prepare to watch it multiple times!
moirakg28 January 2023
Alright look, I'm not a movie person by any means, but i actually I really enjoyed this film. It offers real and raw perspectives on mental health and human connection that you don't really get to see too often. I was fully prepared for the camerawork, coloring, sound, acting, etc to be messy since it's an indie film but WOW? It felt so immersive and professionally well-done for such a small project!

Im not gonna lie, it took a minute to get me hooked as the first act felt a bit slow to me, but I found myself coming up with so many questions as the film went on and to be completely honest, I probably need to watch it a few more times to get some/any of them answered, there's def a mystery to be solved here.

Slow burn for an exciting payback!
taylormondak28 March 2023
Story was a slow progression into madness, plenty of tension and feelings of frustration shared with the main character. Following her through multiple worlds, it's the first movie in a long time I truly didn't know where it was leading!

The ending was a huge payoff! I think I'm going to have to watch this a couple more times to catch all the subtle details the director and DP sprinkled throughout in order to clue you in. There's definitely a really well curated visual story here, and I loved it!

The lead actor's were really great at creating the atmosphere of familiarity and at the same time distance. It's one of those movies you can't just watch once to really appreciate it. Nice work to everyone involved, a beautiful piece of art!

Suspenseful
adrientrevino11 April 2023
The movie is shot beautifully and the story had me trying to figure out what was going to happen next right alongside the main characters. The opening scene really drew me in and got me excited for the rest of the film!

Parallax scratches this niche itch for a movie that can drum up a feeling that you can't quite explain. It's a combination of eeriness, fear, concern, and confusion. Such a unique experience of emotions and very well done.

The best part of the whole experience is that it sticks to one main story line and by doing so is really able to create the mood necessary to tell the story!

I was very excited to see Michael Bachochin's sophomore film, Parallax, which did not disappoint. The film captivated audiences from beginning to end with its stunning visual effects, gripping storyline, and talented cast.

The film's attention to detail was evident in every aspect, from the special effects to the music, which added to the overall immersive experience. The fast-paced and engaging plot kept viewers on the edge of their seats, with unexpected twists and turns that kept the audience guessing until the very end.

In addition to its thrilling elements, "Parallax" tackled important themes in a thought-provoking and meaningful way. The film's powerful performances, masterful storytelling, and breathtaking visuals make it a must-see for anyone who appreciates the magic of cinema.

Riveting!
jpk-8729526 March 2023
Parallax breaks away from the typical formulas used today by Hollywood and delivers a truly thought provoking film. It is gripping from its opening scene until its powerful final act. Strong performances by the entire cast and a unique visual style will ensure audiences walk away with a positive experience. The story is complex and Bachochin tells it masterfully.

I came into the film knowing nothing about the film's plot or genre. I was thoroughly surprised by how intriguing the story is from the start. The film establishes a great pace and never slows down.

I highly recommend Parallax to anyone! The film tackles serious topics and will have your mind engaged even after the film ends.

A Thrilling Sci-Fi Experience, Beautifully Crafted
benreingold29 January 2023
A powerful and visually-pleasing film, Parallax captivates audience members throughout the entire sci-fi-thrilling experience.

With amazing performances by Naomi Prentice and Nelson Ritthaler, you won't want to miss a second of their raw chemistry and character development throughout the film.

This is feature you cannot look away from once you've begun watching; I had questions the whole time, and each one would be answered through small visual hints, leading to the next clue as to why Naomi's character was struggling. We experience twists and turns like no other; you really couldn't have guessed how things would end up in the long-run, and I loved that!

Connor Heck's work at Director of Photography is nothing short of an exquisite masterpiece. The use of underwater shots, as they pertained to the storyline, shows the audience a powerful, yet calming side to the chaos Naomi experiences.

Overall, I can say that I really enjoyed this film. Though at times I felt some scenes seemed to carry on a bit longer than expected, the watch experience was riveting and I was surprised to have found tears streaming down my cheeks during multiple scenes:)

Great work to all involved! I am looking forward to seeing further success from this franchise through their theatrical release's in the near future.
