In April 2020, “The Stranger,” the story of a driver who picks up the rideshare passenger from hell, debuted on Quibi with the world in lockdown. Like most of the bite-sized pieces of entertainment that premiered on the service it came and went without much fanfare, a fate that ultimately was shared by Quibi itself. Launched by Jeffrey Katzenberg with the idea of making short pieces of content that could be consumed on smartphones by people in transit, Quibi had the misfortune of launching as Covid-19 was leading the world into an extended period of couch potato-dom.
“Obviously, the timing was unfortunate,” says Veena Sud, the writer, director and show-runner of “The Stranger.” “But Jeffrey was very generous in supporting all of us filmmakers over the course of making our shows. It just didn’t succeed.”
But “The Stranger” has a fresh chance to connect with audiences who may have missed it the first time around.

Hearing Catherine Hardwicke's name may make you think of the 2000s. Back when only one woman had ever won an Academy Award for Best Director and only two or three had ever been nominated, Hardwicke's output of independent, idiosyncratic films put her in a rare category: female directors with household names. The Texas-born writer/director rose to notoriety in 2003 with "Thirteen," a ferocious, verite account of life on the bleeding edge of Los Angeles co-written by a then unknown Nikki Reed, who herself was only thirteen. After 2005's excellent follow-up "Lords of Dogtown," a slinky portrait of the surf and skateboarding culture in 1970s Venice, Hardwicke rocketed to superstardom with the first installment in the "Twilight" franchise.
Hardwicke has spoken about how painful it was that so little changed for her after "Twilight," a film virtually every producer warned her would go down in flames at the box office,...

Exclusive: Kate Beckinsale will star in the Catherine Hardwicke-helmed family drama Prisoner’s Daughter, penned by Mark Bacci.
“Mark Bacci’s script is a raw, personal look at a deeply fractured family, similar to my first film Thirteen (with Evan Rachel Wood and Holly Hunter.) With Prisoner’s Daughter, I want to fully immerse the viewer in Kate’s character’s intense world as she, her father, and her young son try to heal generational family trauma and find a new way forward,” said Hardwicke.
The film tells the story of a tough but proud ex-con who’s struggling to find a way to reconnect with his only daughter and grandson; once he begins an attempt at reconciliation, his violent past once again catches up to him.

This contains spoilers for the season finale of Quibi’s Don’t Look Deeper. Content warning for discussion of violence against Black bodies.
As director Catherine Hardwicke told Den of Geek in a recent interview, Quibi’s science fiction thriller series Don’t Look Deeper is a coming-of-age story “on steroids”—that is, it takes the existential questions about identity and power seen in other teenage stories and filters those questions through the metaphor of protagonist Aisha (Helena Howard) discovering that she is a robot. Over the course of the feature-length season (released in 7-to-10-minute episodes), Aisha asserts her autonomy to her human creators, challenges her peers who see robots as nothing more than property, and—most importantly—tries to save her robot brother Calian (Tyler Ghyzel) from a similar fate.
However, while Aisha’s identity as a robot provides the most action-packed stakes for the series, it is not the...

Ahead of the premiere of Don’t Look Deeper on Monday, Catherine Hardwicke discusses directing the Quibi series in the latest episode of Rolling Stone’s “The Breakdown.”
“It is a very provocative tale about technology and self-discovery,” Hardwicke says in the opening of the clip. “What makes you human? How deep does that go? Is it skin-deep, emotional intelligence? So it’s quite provocative I think, to explore these seams of technology and humanity.”
The series is set fifteen minutes into the future, as Merced, California teenager Aisha (Helena Howard) discovers she’s not human.

For a series called Don’t Look Deeper, Quibi’s sci-fi offering challenges its own title in the opening scene, in which teenager Aisha (Madeline’s Madeline’s Helena Howard) digs into her arm to find the truth beneath her skin. It’s a grisly sequence that mirrors a scene in Alex Garland’s 2014 film Ex Machina, except that Aisha is a biracial young woman, doubting her own personhood, not a white man; and her story takes place in 7-to-10-minute chunks totaling the length of a feature film. This short-form serialized storytelling is a hallmark of the new streaming service, originally intended for commuters and other on-the-go viewers, which had the awkward timing of debuting in the middle of a pandemic.
However, that change of plans hasn’t discouraged director Catherine Hardwicke; she calls it “beautiful” that Don’t Look Deeper can be watched in bits and pieces or binged all at once.

The dojo is re-opening this summer: Cobra Kai Seasons 1 and 2, which previously streamed on YouTube, will be available via Netflix starting Friday, Aug. 28. As previously reported, the Karate Kid sequel series is moving to Netflix for its all-new third season, which will launch on a to-be-determined date.
Debuting May 2018, Cobra Kai was a breakout hit for YouTube, notching a Season 2 renewal just days after its premiere. YouTube initially intended to launch Season 3 — which has already been shot — last fall; its decision to ditch original scripted fare in favor of unscripted programming prompted the shift to Netflix.

This year’s virtual Comic-Con@Home has announced its schedule for Friday, July 24. The highlights are below.
The virtual event replaces the annual San Diego Comic-Con, the largest fan convention in North America, which was to be held July 22–26 at the San Diego Convention Center, until the Covid-19 pandemic forced its cancellation.
In June, Comic-Con International — the non-profit organization that oversees Sdcc and its sister event, WonderCon in Anaheim, Calif. — announced it was moving forward with the virtual event on the same dates. This time, however, the event is free and open to all.
Friday’s events include panels for all three of AMC’s “Walking Dead” series, Hulu’s new Marvel series “Helstrom,” and creatives like Charlize Theron, Joss Whedon, and Robert Kirkman.
The Comic-Con@Home schedule — including Wednesday, July 22 and Thursday, July 23 — is being announced daily through Sunday.
All times are Pacific Daylight.

Quibi founder Jeffrey Katzenberg and CEO Meg Whitman took the stage Wednesday morning at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas at the Park MGM theater to give a look at the much-buzzed-about mobile streaming short-form platform. This was the first time that Quibi has shown their innovative platform to an audience — and the audience at CES was into it.
The panel started with a video that showed the evolution of entertainment consumption before including glimpses of some of the platform’s A-list creators including Guillermo del Toro, Steven Spielberg, Antoine Fuqua, Peter Farrelly, Catherine Hardwicke and Reese Witherspoon. The video was really selling us on the innovation of Quibi and how “the future is in our hands” — literally.
Katzenberg took the stage to talk about how Quibi is essentially a platform for Hollywood-caliber “stories optimized for viewing on the go.” He said he was inspired by Dan Brown...

Exclusive: Ema Horvath has been cast as a series regular in Amazon Studios’ high-profile Lord of the Rings TV series, I have learned. Reps for Amazon and the actress declined comment.
Set in Middle Earth, the Lotr TV series will explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. In the show’s core cast, which is yet to be confirmed by Amazon, Horvath is joining Will Poulter, Markella Kavenagh and Joseph Mawle.
As pre-production on the Lord Of the Rings TV series is gearing up in New Zealand, the streamer recently moved ahead with an early Season 2 renewal for the sprawling adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy novels. As part of that, Amazon commissioned the reassembling of the writers room to break the second season.
