It was only a matter of time before “Black Mirror” came for the streaming industry, and Season 6 takes a couple of swings directly at Netflix right out of the gate. First with the star-studded, hyper-meta episode “Joan Is Awful,” which introduces the Netflix clone Streamberry (and an arsenal of Easter eggs and references therein). But Episode 2, “Loch Henry,” quiets things down to tackle a much more specific streaming ill — the soulless, exploitative true crime industrial complex and the constant stream of true crime docs digging up traumas from the past.
“Loch Henry” follows an aspiring filmmaker back to his Scottish hometown, where he intends to make a documentary about eggs, only to get sucked into making a film about the horrific crime case that transformed his hometown from a former tourist destination into a desolate ghost town. In “Black Mirror” tradition, the ensemble is a healthy mix of familiar faces,...

Vox Cinemas, the highest-grossing exhibitor in West Asia, where it operates more than 600 screens, will focus on diversification next, while also continuing its geographical expansion plan, says Ignace Lahoud, CEO of Majid Al Futtaim Leisure (Maf), Entertainment and Cinemas, which operates Vox.
“In the last two or three years, most of our growth has been focused on building and opening cinemas in Saudi Arabia. We intend to continue expanding there, although probably not at the same pace.”
Several analysts, including PwC, see Saudi as becoming a billion-dollar movie market.
Variety is honoring Vox with its Achievement in Intl. Exhibition Award. The company, operating in eight countries, is optimistic about its future in such markets as Kuwait and Egypt, with plans to bring cinema to rural areas and provide an affordable experience.
However, looking for new ways to diversify cinema-going experience continues to be an integral part of Vox’s business strategy.

The Intl. Emerging Film Talent Assn. (Iefta) returns to El Gouna, Egypt, with two ongoing partnerships at the fifth film festival, running Oct. 14-22.
For the fifth year, Iefta and its Global Film Expression Mentorship program will participate in the CineGouna Platform, which enables Arab film directors and producers with projects in development or films in post-production to find creative and financial support.
And for the third year in El Gouna (after two years in Cannes), Iefta and the U.N. High Commission for Refugees are presenting Refugee Voices in Film. This year’s program explores how filmmakers use different film formats, including narrative, documentary and animation, to depict stories of refugees around the globe.
The fest at the Egyptian resort town of El Gouna, on the Red Sea, has a longtime mandate of “cinema for humanity,” and the programs and films selected reflect this.

The world is in the midst of a seismic shift, and the human race is experiencing and learning about life, society and culture anew. In this time of history, we have discovered greater divides among people from different backgrounds much more than we were aware of. How to deal with differences and changes? How can we come to terms with challenges? How do we place ourselves in the world?
“Here We Are. Here We Go.: Swiss Documentaries on Adolescence” celebrates the human spirit for survival and hope by looking into how adolescents and their families from different backgrounds feel, contemplate and tackle difficulties – how they develop their mental stamina and coping mechanism and find their place in the world. People from all walks of life form a universal tension that drives where the world is marching towards. Youngsters are our future, and how adults enlighten them to love and resolve discrepancies is their future.

Oscilloscope Laboratories is teaming with Mailchimp once again for #SupportTheShorts, a free streaming event featuring a selection of short films from the SXSW Film Festival on the global streaming platform Mailchimp Presents.
#SupportTheShorts launched last year when SXSW was canceled due to Covid-19 and hundreds of short filmmakers lost the opportunity for their work to be seen. To remedy this, Mailchimp partnered with Oscilloscope to give these short films and their creators a digital home where their work could be enjoyed from anywhere.
This year’s online edition of SXSW brings back the platform for filmmakers to showcase their art at the festival and to a broader audience. In addition to the film licensing, Mailchimp and Oscilloscope supplied hundreds of SXSW festival badges to 18 organizations committed to boosting opportunities for underrepresented communities in the film industry.
