Photograph by Courtesy of HBO Get ready to watch the wildest movie industry saga since The Disaster Artist! HBO’s new documentary, MoviePass, MovieCrash, premiering May 29th, dives deep into the spectacular rise and fall of MoviePass – that beloved (and then not-so-beloved) movie subscription service. Recall those wonderful times when cinema tickets were inexpensive and available in excess. Yeah, unfortunately, the dream suddenly became a nightmare. This documentary provides us with an inside look at how MoviePass went from being a hero to a zero in a matter of years as a result of a poisonous combination of corporate avarice, dubious business dealings, and wasteful spending. This documentary is a must-see, regardless of interest level. It offers an insightful look at the darker sides of the film industry in addition to telling a gripping story of ambition gone wrong.
Put May 29th on your calendars and get ready for another exhilarating MoviePass journey.

Company co-founder Stacy Spikes was interviewed by John Fink for The Film Stage on the subject of the company’s relaunch after their business model proved unsustainable, the state of the movie industry today, and his memoir Black Founder. In his review of MoviePass, MovieCrash, Fink recommends Spikes’ book as an alternative to the film, which he calls “a detailed overview that is at times a little too dry to find the irony and injustice at the core of this story.”

True Brit Entertainment has revealed a first look image of Pierce Brosnan in the boxing biopic ‘Giant.’
The movie is based on the compelling true-life story of British-Yemeni pugilist Prince Naseem ‘Naz’ Hamed and his rags-to-riches ascent to a World Championship under the tutelage of his Irish-born boxing trainer Brendan Ingle.
The story of Hamed’s humble beginnings on the tough working-class streets of Sheffield and his discovery by Ingle, himself a steel industry worker turned boxing trainer. Their unlikely partnership along with Naz’ unorthodox style, cocky persona, and sheer dominance in the ring, propelled them to the top of boxing’s elite and unprecedented levels of global superstardom, all in the face of the rampant Islamophobia and racism of 80’s and 90’s Britain.
Also in news – Paul Giamatti, Joely Richardson & more join cast of ‘Downton Abbey 3’
Amir El-Masry will play Naz, and Brosnan takes on the role of Ingle.

Black. It is the color that absorbs all colors, the shade that holds the sun's warmth as it moves east to west. It is the color of a people, not just African but Caribbean, Middle Eastern, American, and more. But it is also music: the color at the center of the trumpet's brass ring, the shadow that fills the club when the lights get low and the party begins. Over the decades, Latin music has built a reputation for being wildly popular, no doubt in part due to its danceable nature. But what often gets lost in the conversation is the contribution that Black Latines had in cultivating the sound that, today, many of us regard as uniquely "Latin."
As a kid, I was guilty of just that. It wasn't until years later that I came to understand the importance of claiming my Afro-Puerto Rican heritage and how it shaped...

Padmé Amidala died moments after giving birth to Luke and Leia in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. 2023 was supposed to be an excellent year for movies. Now that people were no longer reluctant to return to the theatres due to Covid, the year was expected to be peppered with blockbusters, making this one of the highest-grossing years in memory. After all, there were Marvel movies, DC movies, new stars, and a pipeline of film that didn’t seem like it would dry up soon.
Of course, things ended up a little different, with Hollywood brought to a standstill by strikes. At the same time, once influential franchises started to wane when pitted against an incredibly weary public hungry for something new. Indeed, it was a pretty dramatic year overall, so here at JoBlo, we’re counting down some of the biggest pop culture stories of the year.

Looking at the first half of the year, January to June 2023, one would believe that the film industry has yet to come out of the Covid-19 lockdown effect. The films just don’t seem to work. Nor do the top-billing stars. Were it for the Covid-19 hangover, how does one explain the blockbuster success of ‘The Kashmir Files’ and ‘The Kerala Story’? How does one account for the success of ‘Pathaan’, ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar’,’Zara Hatkke Zara Bachke’, and the last year’s release ‘Drishyam 2’?
As against these successes, what explains the failure of such massively budgeted vehicles such as ‘Adipurush’, to cite the very recent example? Looks like the Hindi audience is not lured by films that are mainly made on computers with VFX!

In college, H Woo saw a documentary about an illicit restaurant being run out of a campus apartment at the University of Southern California.
His first thought was, I can do this.
He was also a student at USC, and the dining options then (with “then” being 2017) were “horrendous,” he says. So he’d started teaching himself to cook, and after seeing what was going on with Paladar, he wanted to give it a shot. He found out pretty quickly that making food for a large group of people was not as easy as it seemed. But that didn’t discourage him.

It has been 50 years since the island of Okinawa was placed back under Japanese administration. And it is almost 70 years since Central Park Avenue in the city of Koza was bestowed its famous name. Koza's story is closely intertwined with the US military, which shapes the life of the islanders. Here the cultures, American nonchalance and cosmopolitanism intersect with the Japanese way of life and ancient Okinawan customs. A unique blend of East and West in the world. The Rise and Fall of Park Avenue and the 10 Rooms focuses on this cultural melting point. Four perspectives on the mysterious city of Koza, four very different stories, shaped by the people who go about their daily lives on this street, with their small and large worries. Irish producer and film industry activist Mike Downey has received the inaugural lifetime achievement award of the Stockfish Film Festival in Iceland for his contributions to the international film industry.
The award, presented at a private ceremony Wednesday night, recognizes achievement from professionals in the “academe, production, distribution, film festival and market scenes.”
Downey, founder of Film and Music Entertainment (F&me), has production credits on more than 100 feature films, including Dome Karukoski’s Tom of Finland, Volker Schlöndorff’s Return to Montauk, Agnieszka Holland’s Charlatan and Adrian Sibley’s documentary The Ghost of Richard Harris. He is currently working on Holland’s highly-anticipated upcoming Franz Kafka biopic Kafka. He’s a member of the BAFTA Council, the Asia Pacific Screen Academy and the U.S. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
But Downey is arguably better known within the film industry for his tireless activism on behalf of filmmakers in crisis.

Let’s take a trip back in time to the early 1980s at the height of David Bowie’s popularity.
MTV launched in 1981 with the words, “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll.” The first video played was The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star.” Quite appropriate.
MTV stands for music television because that’s what it was. MTV played music videos all day, every day — 24 hours of videos.
The network brought artists into our homes for the first time. We no longer just listened to the music; we watched it. This helped launch some of the biggest names in music of the time. It turned artists such as Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Boy George, and Duran Duran into stars.
David Bowie had some of his biggest commercial successes during this time, partially because of MTV.
