It’s by no means an exaggeration to call Horizon: An American Saga the ultimate passion project for Kevin Costner. It’s a concept he’s been working on bringing to the big screen since 1988 — even before he directed, starred in, and won Oscars for Dances with Wolves. Horizon covers similar territory, focusing on settlers’ expansion into the American West during the time of the Civil War. Originally envisioned as a single film, Horizon has expanded into a four-film epic, with the first two parts being released this summer and the final two films likely getting 2025 release dates (they haven’t been scheduled yet). Costner premiered Chapter 1 at the Cannes Film Festival last month; speaking at a press conference there, Costner explained why he’s always been so drawn to the idea of making Westerns.

Over the years, Kevin Costner's name has become synonymous with the Western genre for many viewers. The actor has consistently landed the lead roles in movies and TV shows set in the Wild West, as well as directing and producing some of them. So it wasn't at all surprising that he came up with his own movie saga in the genre.
What was surprising, however, was to find out that even the most popular and widely recognized artists can't get studio support just because of their name. With the genre still considered unprofitable by many, Costner had to fight for Horizon to survive and finally get made.

Kevin Costner spent $38 million of his own money to finance his new Western film Horizon: An American Saga. Well, the early tracking numbers are in, and the news is not good: the first part of Horizon is currently projected to make $12 million in its opening weekend of release on June 28th (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Horizon has been Costner’s passion project for decades, having first begun working on it in 1988. Now, decades later, he’s finally set to unveil the first part of what he ultimately hopes to be a four-installment film franchise that he will write, direct, and star in himself. The total budget for the first two films sits around $100 million, with Costner himself having personally contributed $38 million to the overall budget (apparently by mortgaging his house). The remaining chunk was reportedly financed through foreign sales.

Paramount’s A Quiet Place: Day One could make some noise at the box office this weekend with a $40M+ debut. The three-day launch total aligns with previous chapters of the Quiet Place saga, with A Quiet Place Part II opening on Memorial Day weekend during the pandemic with $47.5M. The Quiet Place series attracts 13-34-year-old audience members, with Black, Latino, Hispanic, and Caucasian viewers making up most of the crowd.

The box office prospects for one of the summer’s biggest swings have appeared on the horizon.
Kevin Costner’s big-budget Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter One hit tracking on Tuesday, with one major service putting its domestic opening at $12 million, give or take. That’s not great news for Costner and those backing the independently financed Western, considering it cost $100 million to make before marketing and is being followed quickly by Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2 on Aug 6.
Warner Bros. is only handling the film domestically, and has three weeks left to make a major marketing push, including helping Costner rally Yellowstone fans. Insiders say Costner believes that tracking isn’t capturing his fan base, which largely resides in the middle of the country.
Paramount’s prequel A Quiet Place: Day One also came on tracking Thursday, and looks to easily scare off Horizon and top the chart with a decent $40 million.

While Summer Game Fest hasn’t been able to replace the E3-sized hole in our hearts quite yet, it has certainly become the biggest gaming event of the season. That also means that it is subject to the same series of leaks, rumors, and popular predictions that precede such events.
Truth be told, those going into this even expecting a monumental showcase of the biggest upcoming games will likely walk away from Sgf at least slightly disappointed. Still, here are some of the more notable rumblings about the event you should know about.
Don’t Expect Many Major New Game Announcements
To get the bad news out of the way, Summer Game Fest organizer Geoff Keighley has already made it clear that you shouldn’t expect too many major new announcements at Sgf. There will be some reveals, but the show will largely focus on “existing games that have new updates for fans.

If you ask Kevin Costner about the similarities existing between ‘Horizon’ and the ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff ‘1883,’ he’ll tell you it’s possible Taylor Sheridan may have “borrowed” ideas from the upcoming movie ‘Horizon’ when penning the script for ‘1883.’ The problem is that Costner doesn’t believe the scriptwriter will ever admit to doing it.
See What Kevin Costner Has To Say About the “Duplications” Between ‘Horizon’ And ‘Yellowstone’
Before the great Kevin Costner and Taylor Sheridan fallout, the duo were once on very good terms.
Even though neither Costner nor Jon Baird – Costner’s ‘Horizon’ co-writer – were credited as writers on the epic Western drama ‘1883,’ Costner still believes Sheridan could have been inspired by ideas from ‘Horizon.’
I know what you’re thinking; if ‘1883’ premiered in 2021, a good three years before ‘Horizon: An American Saga,’ which is still to premiere on June 28, how can the former have influenced the latter?...

Kevin Costner is so heavily associated with the Western genre that he not only departed the most epic Western saga of recent years, but did so in order to make his own epic Western saga. The Dances With Wolves and Open Range legend had, in recent years, been the face of TV smash Yellowstone – the Taylor Sheridan series that became a ratings juggernaut, and spawned an entire universe of spin-off shows set in different eras of American history. But before the show's end, Costner departed the role of John Dutton III, partly in order to direct and star in his multi-part movie Western series Horizon: An American Saga. With the largely self-funded Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 hitting cinemas soon, Yellowstone fans will get their Costner Western fix – but as it stands, the star won’t appear in the upcoming final run of the TV smash.

Yellowstone, the wildly popular Western drama series is the product of Taylor Sheridan and Kevin Costner’s collaboration. It is safe to say that Costner’s mesmerizing portrayal of John Dutton is the reason that the show is so popular. The actor’s portrayal of the wealthy rancher was so outstanding that garnered a massive fan following for the show, allowing Sheridan to revive the forgotten Western genre.

Get this, Kevin Costner is reportedly looking forward to returning to Taylor Sheridan’s epic western show, ‘Yellowstone.’
This bit of news is coming after critics ripped open Costner’s passion project ‘Horizon: An American Saga,’ which, if you can believe it, was the Western drama that inspired Costner to leave his lead role in ‘Yellowstone,’ mortgage his home to raise $30 million to sponsor it, and blow off Taylor Sheridan in the process.
Some say the decision to step away from ‘Yellowstone’ looks ready to blow up in his face. Here’s what we know about Costner’s hopes to return.
Kevin Costner – Reportedly ‘Begging’ To Return As John Dutton In ‘Yellowstone’ Following ‘Horizon’s’ Negative Reception
Cannes critics were not particularly nice when describing Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon.’ The Hollywood Reporter called it a “clumsy slog” with “messy plot threads.” IndieWire declared it to be the “dullest cinematic vanity project of the century.

Kevin Costner is one of the most successful and well-known actors in Hollywood. Although he is better known for his acting roles, he has started to actively establish himself for his work behind the camera. His directorial debut was through the 1990 film, Dances with Wolves. Since then, he has only assumed this role on two other projects. That was until now.

However, there was one person who gave him quite an interesting piece of advice on how and where he should release the story. Something Costner refused to listen to.

It is safe to say that Kevin Costner’s John Dutton is the reason Yellowstone exists. As far as these TV drama characters go, he is one of the last true men, which is why we like him. For decades, Kevin Costner was an icon of the big screen – leading seismic cinematic feats like The Untouchables, Dances With Wolves, JFK, and Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves. More recently, though, he became a leading force in the 21st century small-screen landscape as the figurehead of the Yellowstone empire. But make no mistake: his allegiance is to cinema. And he’s quite literally putting his money where his mouth is, conjuring up a multi-part Western epic on the big screen. Get ready for Horizon: An American Saga, whose first two three-hour chapters hit the big screen this summer, soon to be followed by more instalments, and for which Costner contributed roughly $58 million of his own cash.
It is an absolutely gigantic gambit. But for Costner, going all-in on the power of cinema was part of the point – hence why he turned down the idea to make Horizon a streaming series.

Kevin Costner has been a very committed actor who continues to give his all with every film he does. His breakout role in The Untouchables led him to many acclaimed performances in films like Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, and A Perfect World among others. Kevin Costner’s hugely ambitious western movie series Horizon – An American Saga still needs more money to get the last two films shot.
We’re just over three weeks away from the release of Kevin Costner’s passionate project – or at least the first part of it – Horizon: An American Saga – Part 1. For his fourth outing as a director Kevin Costner gets back in the saddle for another exploration of America’s roots, already visited in Dances With Wolves and Open Range.
Clearly this is a passion project which at more than three hours’ running time may just test the patience of some of the audience. It has all the hallmarks of a production destined for a television mini-series with apparently three other chapters promised by Costner.
Set in 1859 the narrative covers the territories that extend from Wyoming to Kansas, focusing on the violence that flares between the settlers and the indigenous tribes.
For anyone starved of what used to be a Hollywood staple genre Costner delivers many of the traditional ingredients with stunning landscapes, colourful characters including the man himself as a grumpy horse trader although he doesn’t appear until about an hour in.
Horizon is a settlement which only is beginning to take faltering.

Young and the Restless (Y&r) spoilers suggest it’s been a hot minute since Summance has been seen in Genoa City, as Summer Newman (Allison Lanier) has been more preoccupied with her stepson Harrison Abbott’s (Redding Munsell) safety as of late, then her romance.
Rightfully so, however, fans can’t help but feel as if she might be re-catching feelings for her ex-hubby, Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor), especially after Friday’s episode.
The Young And The Restless Spoilers – Skyle Are On The Same Page

May ended up being more than a bit of a letdown at the box office, yet the summer movie season continues on with three more major franchise sequels (or prequels) and a few other attempts at variety. Read on for Gold Derby’s June 2024 box office preview.
“Inside Out 2” (Disney/Pixar – June 14)
Disney and Pixar Animation are hoping to make a comeback with this sequel to Pete Docter‘s 2015 Oscar-winning animated blockbuster, which grossed $850.6 million worldwide after opening with $90.4 million domestically. Directed by Kelsey Mann, the sequel introduces a number of new emotions including Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke, Envy voiced by Emmy winner Ayo Edebiri, Paul Walter Hauser voicing Embarassment, and Adèle Exarchopoulos as Ennui (because it’s a French emotion). Mindy Kaling‘s Disgust has also been recast with Liza Lapira from “The Equalizer.” In the “before times,” there was little reason for this not to open with more than $100 million,...

Kevin Costner risked everything to get his Horizon movies done: his lead role in Yellowstone, his ridiculously expensive property, and an ungodly amount of personal money. Horizon has been a huge gamble since Day One but Costner went through with his dream project anyway, having spent many years planning and writing it.
The first movie, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is set for a June 28, 2024 theatrical premiere, but the first critic reviews are in… And they’re not looking good.
Horizon: Part 1 Destroyed on Rotten Tomatoes
Knowing just how much the making of Horizon cost Kevin Costner literally and figuratively, it’s imperative for him that the movie succeeds. However, things are not looking good for the first installment on Rotten Tomatoes: its Critic Score is currently sitting at an embarrassing 35% from 23 reviews that have been submitted so far.

When it was announced that Yellowstone would conclude with its fifth season, many reports emerged stressing this was a result of an alleged feud between Kevin Costner and Taylor Sheridan. Moreover, considering that Costner has kickstarted his own film series with Horizon: An American Saga, some speculated his commitment to the Western epic might’ve contributed to its ending.
But earlier this month, the actor finally cleared the air surrounding the Yellowstone drama, even stating that he initially signed in for seven seasons of Sheridan’s western drama.

The big question that keeps popping up amid Kevin Costner and Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone fallout is whether the Oscar-winning actor will ever return to the Paramount series without further escalation of the already overblown drama.
As fans, critics, and studio execs watch the unfolding situation that can arguably rival the plot of Yellowstone itself, Costner remains divided over his attachment to the series that very much propelled him to the forefront of fame and relevance as an A-lister.

After years of feuding and inaction, Kevin Costner’s unwillingness to resolve the tension between him and the director is evidence enough of their growing chasm. Moreover, with the public’s attention increasing with every passing month, there seems to be no fitting end to the Yellowstone equation other than the good old formula of forgive-and-forget.

The American Western may have long passed its heyday, but the genre has endured throughout the years. While the visuals and ideas it addresses may change, the basic foundation continues to draw fans. After all, where else can you pit man versus man versus the environment on such a large scale? The Dead Don’t Hurt seeks to continue this legacy. The sophomore feature from Viggo Mortensen finally debuts in America after hitting the fall festival circuit. Featuring an excellent performance from Vicky Krieps as its face, The Dead Don’t Hurt mostly plays like a traditional genre exercise. However, using an immigrant couple at its center speaks to the changing landscape in American life.
The Dead Don’t Hurt Plot
Vivienne Le Coudy (Krieps) passes away with her husband, Holger (Mortensen), at her side. At the same time, Mayor Rudolph Schiller (Danny Huston) requests Holger help bring a local crime to justice.

Kevin Costner’s latest Western saga, Horizon: An American Saga, has left critics divided, debuting to one of his worst scores on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite the four-part epic being a passion project he’s nurtured for over 30 years, the initial reception isn’t exactly encouraging. High Stakes and Financial Gambles To realize his vision, Costner invested $38 million of his own money into Horizon, even mortgaging his Santa Barbara estate. This decision reportedly sent his accountant into a conniption fit. According to Costner, it wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the decision I needed to make. He added in a recent...

Wow, Kevin Costner‘s ‘Horizon’ may have gotten a standing ovation at the Cannes, but the critics are far from smiling at the ‘Yellowstone’ star’s “passion” project.
The three-hour Western drama is facing heavy criticisms, with one dubbing it the “dullest cinematic vanity project of the century.”
Kevin Costner’s – “Passion” Project Dubbed A Failure Following Cannes Premiere
Major outlets are unleashing their judgements on Kevin Costner’s 3 hour epic movie ‘Horizon’ and they’re not holding back. This movie is especially significant for Kevin Costner because, not only has he dreamed of making it for over two decades, he actually self-funded the project.
In fact, he leveraged one of his homes to shell out $38 million of the $90 million needed to make ‘Horizon.’
The first chapter is a three-hour long movie that was said to set the stage for the follow-up in the most sluggish and boring of ways.

Paul W.S. Anderson's high-octane sci-fi/horror film "Event Horizon" takes place in the year 2047 when humanity is on the cusp of inventing faster-than-light travel. The title alludes to an experimental starship that went missing on its maiden voyage seven years before the events of the film. When the Event Horizon mysterious reappears out near Neptune, a team of astronauts is dispatched to investigate.
En route to Neptune, the Event Horizon's designer, Dr. Weir (Sam Neill), explains to the other astronauts that his ship doesn't actually travel faster than light -- that would violate the Law of Relativity -- but it can "bunch up" space and pass through a dimensional portal. Weir illustrates the way his engines work by using a pencil to poke a hole through both ends of a nearby Playboy centerfold, folded in half. Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone has been making headlines since its release in 2018. Kevin Costner has been connected to a lot of projects throughout his tenure as an actor, with one of his most remarkable performances being that of John Dutton in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone lore. This is why, when fans found out the saga was going to get cut short because he was leaving to helm his own Horizon saga, they were nothing short of devastated.

Even the best TV show can be completely ruined by behind-the-scenes drama, and Yellowstone fans know this firsthand. Even as the entire world of Taylor Sheridan fans tried to understand what exactly ended the relationship between him and his star, Kevin Costner, the more information that came out, the more confusing it became.
With both sides pointing fingers and trying to absolve themselves of any blame, the only thing Yellowstone fans know is that their favorite show is now ending in a shambles. Even worse, Dutton family patriarch John will likely meet his demise right on their screens. At least, that's the fate Kevin Costner has chosen for his character.
Why Did Kevin Costner Leave Yellowstone?
The western star's departure came as no surprise. Although it was first reported that he was dropping Yellowstone in favor of working on his own western trilogy, Horizon, that was only part of the truth.

Ever since Taylor Sheridan and Kevin Costner had their little falling out, the greatest mystery of Yellowstone became its finale — particularly, its cast and/or ability to have a decent closure for the patriarch of the Dutton family. There’s little to no opportunity to do so without former lead star Kevin Costner, so fans have been worried lately.
Recently, Costner made a few hopeful statements, giving fans the idea that he might still return — but the latest update seemingly puts a lid on such aspirations.

While spectacular news for fans in the sense that there’s been quite a delay since the first part of S5 premiered, it also spells trouble for Costner’s return.

Kevin Costner, the guest on this year’s Cannes Film Festival live episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is one of the most admired actors and filmmakers of his time, and has been for some 40 years, with credits to his name including The Untouchables, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, Dances with Wolves, JFK, The Bodyguard, Hatfiels & McCoys and Yellowstone.
This week, the two-time Oscar winner, 69, came to Cannes to premiere the first installment of what is arguably his most ambitious project yet: Horizon, a four-film Western epic that he co-wrote, produced, directed, stars in and largely self-financed — indeed, he contributed $38 million of the $100 million total budget. (Warner Bros. will release Chapter 1 on June 28 and Chapter 2 on Aug. 16.)

Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 is officially out. The movie he’d risked so much for, his dream project that the actor was cooking for many years, trying to get the funding for it… In the end, Costner took a massive gamble and poured tens of millions of his own money into making Horizon — but we severely underestimated just how much money it was.
Kevin Costner Spent a Fortune on Horizon
There are two major ways in which Costner took immense risks to make Horizon come true. The first one is, of course, his career: the Western star lost his lead part in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone to work on Horizon and likely rejected some other offers to make time for his own project. But that’s not even the main thing.
For many years, Costner was failing to find production companies willing to fund Horizon.

Talking to Kevin Costner after the Cannes premiere of “Horizon: An American Saga,” IndieWire’s Anne Thompson asked the filmmaker if he thought he could improve on Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone.” Costner starred as John Dutton for five seasons; he is unmentioned in the press release for the sixth, which just began production.
“No, of course not,” he said.
However, Costner noted, it could be the other way around: During the second season of “Yellowstone” in 2019, he said, Sheridan was looking for writers. He and Baird sent him the “Horizon” script. Thompson noted that both “1883” and “Horizon” share a wagon train story.
“So I don’t know if there’s any duplications there,” Costner said. “Whether he borrowed something, only he’d have to admit to.” (Reps for Sheridan did not respond to multiple requests for comment.)
Vague accusations of “borrowing” aren’t new to “Yellowstone.” It’s a popular topic on fan sites,...

This year will mark the end of ‘Yellowstone,’ even though seasons 6 and 7 were originally planned for it. However, despair not, even though creator Taylor Sheridan says the ending was rushed, he did confirm that he was still able to wrap it up the way it would have been done even if there were subsequent seasons.
Prior to Kevin Costner exiting the series to work on his own Western drama ‘Horizon,’ the show’s first four and a half seasons have revolved around the Dutton family, with patriarch Costner’s John Dutton at the helm. However, Costner has agreed to return to wrap up the series. But what kind of ending will it now get?
