Surprisingly honest and in-depth look into animation behind-the-scenes
coltonkimmy5 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Rest in peace Ryder Buck. Jennifer Lee is going to do a great job as CCO of Walt Disney Animation Studios. Her giggling with glee and then crying tears of joy at the finished Into the Unknown scene is the perfect mood. Very good docuseries that isn't pretentious and it doesn't seem like it was altered to make any particular person look better. I'm surprised that Disney allowed this to be shown to the public at all.

More documentaries like this please Disney+
nrshorter26 July 2020
Loved this, after The Imagineering Story and Prop Culture and now this Disney+ really need to continue these high quality behind the scenes documentaries.

This is actually better than the movie itself. I just hope we get more for other movies old and new.

A Fantastic watch!

Absolutely loved watching this. In fact I'm now sitting down and watching it a 2nd time with my husband. It's so magical to see all the love and hard work that it takes into making these films. It's incredibly evident about how much these people care about these characters. I 100% love the movie even more. I want to see them do this with future movies. Gives me a greater appreciation!

Is this any way to make a movie?
adamsandel27 November 2020
This fascinating series gave me an even greater appreciation of the army of talented artists behind an animated film. But the frustrating part of the whole endeavor is the practice of setting a sacrosanct release date years ahead of the opening, which seems to be more important to the studio than the quality of the film.

This clearly put undue pressure on everyone involved who was struggling to do their painstaking work while racing with the clock.

"Frozen II" could have benefited from the input of more musical theatre experts, who know the rules of story structure and the integration of song, story and character (which Howard Ashman brought to the Disney renaissance from "The Little Mermaid" onward).

It's frustrating to watch the creators struggling with those basic issues throughout the 3 hours of this documentary series.

But the finished film made a fortune which seems to be the primary goal of the company today.

Magical behind the scenes of creating a wonderful picture.

(4 out of 5 stars).

Into the Unknown behind the scenes of Frozen 2 is one entertaining and fun look behind the scenes. I loved this more than the Mandalorian documentary which had the cast in a roundtable throughout the series. This although showed the whole preproduction. Animation. Post. The hard work the writers. Animators and storytellers coming together to make a wonderful movie. It was very fun and engaging.

Emotional rollercoaster ride...
kimkat5 July 2020
This was an eye-opening film. I could not believe how beautifully connected everything/everyone was during all of the Frozen 2 production - and how much was accomplished in the (relatively) short amount of time during this filming! Amazing! The crew definitely considered/considers each other family. That real connection truly shows in the final product. I found myself so thrilled at times with the production crews successes and loved hearing their personal stories, of which several tiny pieces made it into the film. This was truly a labor of love at every level. I've watched this twice already, as I consider it one of the best docu-series I have ever had the pleasure to see. I cannot get Into the Unknown out of my head!...

Amazing

I was blown away by how good this was. Way better than the "making of" features that accompany the typical DVD, this documentary really shows the enormity of creating an animated movie. It also shows the enormous pressure the directors were under to make the movie meet expectations. Anyone who is a fan of disney animation (or whoms 4 year old watches frozen 2 every single day) will absolutely love this series.

I now know how it feels to be making these kind of movies. The voice actors were having a blast. The directors did their best to make this movie good. Congrats on all of them!

This was a surprisingly wonderful gem, one of the best insights into the animation process. I loved seeing all the different elements that make a movie, things you wouldn't normally know or think about. After watching this I have such a deeper appreciation for this movie and for animators.

Pretty good
jwwalrath-227-8548712 July 2020
I found this documentary show about the creation of Frozen 2 to be pretty good.

The animation process differs from live-action and you learn some interesting stuff. The best parts are what doesn't make it into the film and why. You also get to see the stress of the creators trying to get this movie right and meeting the deadline and the expectations that come with a sequel to a huge hit. Everyone interviewed is dedicated to making this film work and it shows. Co-director and screenwriter Jennifer Lee is definitely the MVP as you can see both her passion and anxiousness.

Most of this takes place within the Disney animation studios, which is also a visually pleasing place to watch.

Be aware that this only the last third of the film's production and not the whole thing. There are a few moments, mostly in the first episode, where people are introduced or intentionally acting for the camera.

Overall, if you liked Frozen 2, you'll probably like seeing what went into it.

An excellent behind the scenes movie!
nadijaherdwina18 September 2020
Not a big fan of Frozen 2 and docuseries but this behind the scenes movie really got my full attention! Watching all the detailed process of making an animated movie is unexpectedly enlightening. This movie gives more meaning to the actual movie. I really hope there's more like this for the upcoming Disney movies!

Kudos to everyone behind Frozen 2!

A direct link to the magic

Into the Unknown: Making Frozen II

This will be a very short blurb regarding the docuseries about the making of the spectacular sequel to Frozen. When I was a teenager back in the 90s, I would visit the Animation building in then Disney's MGM Studios to watch the production of the movies. It felt so cool to go behind the scenes and watch the magic get created. That feature is long gone, but Disney has been making mini documentaries, either in series, or one offs, about the making of a lot of their features.

I enjoyed watching the actors record their voices. I enjoyed hearing songs that were cut, or changed. I really got excited watching the computer animation process, turning scribbles on a storyboard into the gorgeous animation we enjoy today. It is also nice to meet the director, and the head supervisors, the songwriters and the animators. I felt the anxiety and pressure coming through the documentary, even 5 years after we all know how successful the movie became.

These are specials that need to continue to be made. People are interested in the making of movies and tv shows that are beloved. Since this movie had so many deep themes, I highly recommend this docuseries because they go into detail about how the themes were created and explored. I loved it.
