“The Voice” battles round for season 25 concluded on Tuesday night with each of the four coaches narrowing their teams of 10 down to seven. Veteran coach and the only one this season with a win to his name, John Legend used his one and only “Playoff Pass” on Bryan Olesen, sending him straight to the live shows while the remaining five battles winners and the artist he stole move on to the next round. Those six artists representing their team will next take the stage for The Knockouts beginning April 8, but first we want to know who is your favorite artist on Team Legend? Vote in the poll below.

There are many things that we love about The Voice, right, from the coaches’ goofy interplay to the contestants’ go-for-broke performances. But is any one of them more fun than second-guessing the panel’s decisions? And I dunno about you, but I did quite a bit of that Tuesday evening as the Battles ended. On two out of four face-offs, I disagreed with the coaches. Read on, and we’ll discuss why.

After five straight weeks of being ranked the most likely houseguest to win Season 23 of “Big Brother,” Tiffany Mitchell has been dethroned. The 40-year old phlebotomist from Detroit has been called one of the greatest masterminds to ever set foot in the house, but her quest for the $750,000 grand prize could be in jeopardy. Tiffany has butted heads with her Cookout alliance and is seen as a bully by some of her housemates. Taking all of that into consideration, loyal viewers making their predictions at Gold Derby have dropped Tiffany from the top spot in favor of the more even-tempered Xavier Prather.

Heading into Thursday’s sixth live eviction episode, Xavier is now favored to win the season with 3/1 odds. The 27-year old lawyer from Milwaukee is followed by Tiffany at 39/10 odds and reigning Head of Household Kyland Young at 4/1 odds.

The 2021 VMA nominations are out, and there are a lot of records that could be broken at the 37th edition of these awards. From potential firsts for Cardi B, J Balvin and Drake, to historic repeats by BTS and The Weeknd, let’s see what milestones could be achieved this year.
SEE2021 VMA nominations list: Justin Bieber, Megan Thee Stallion, Olivia Rodrigo among top MTV Video Music Awards nominees BTS
Nominated for Best Pop, BTS’ “Butter” could make them only the third act to win the category back-to-back. The only other artists who have done so are Nsync in 2000 (“Bye Bye Bye”) and 2001 (“Pop”), and Britney Spears in 2008 (“Piece of Me”) and 2009 (“Womanizer”). Additionally, “Butter” would tie BTS with No Doubt and Ariana Grande at two total wins, and they’d be one step closer to matching the biggest category winners: Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, who have won three total.

Billie Eilish topped the Billboard 200 with her sophomore album “Happier Than Ever” in its first week with 238,000 album units. In its second week it dropped significantly to 85,000 units, but that was enough to keep it in first place, which makes it only the second album this year to spend its first two weeks in the top spot, following Morgan Wallen‘s “Dangerous.” Will Eilish go three for three on next week’s chart?
Our users already placed their bets for the Billboard tracking week currently underway, and most of them said Eilish would remain on top. But Olivia Rodrigo‘s “Sour” was number-two this week with 61,000 units after 12 weeks on the chart, so with that kind of staying power she certainly has the potential to climb back to number-one for its fourth nonconsecutive week. As of this writing Paul Bettany is the front-runner (with 71/20 odds according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users) to win Best Movie/Limited Actor at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards for his performance in the Disney+ limited series “WandaVision.” Let’s consider a couple of the important factors that could help him come out on top.
Bettany plays Vision, an android who’s trying to hide his superhero identity by living a happy suburban life in Westview, New Jersey, with Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen). As the couple’s surroundings cycle through different eras of television sitcom tropes, they begin to suspect that something strange is happening to them.
Of this year’s nominees for Best Movie/Limited Actor, Bettany happens to be the only one whose show is up for Best Limited Series. That could help him considerably. After all, the other men in his category each appear to have some disadvantages.

There’s a good chance “Saturday Night Live” will win the Emmy for Best Comedy Supporting Actor, according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. It’s just a question of which actor from the show will win. As of this writing Kenan Thompson and Bowen Yang are tied as front-runners with 5/1 odds. Who do you think has the edge?

Ethan Hawke is a four-time Oscar nominee for “Training Day”, “Before Sunset”, “Before Midnight” and “Boyhood”, but he’s never been recognized at the Emmy Awards. Until now?
Not only does Hawke play famed abolitionist John Brown on Showtime’s “The Good Lord Bird,” but he’s also on the Emmy ballot for writing and producing the limited series. That means he could get a whopping three Emmy noms for this project alone. Hawke was recently nominated as a lead actor at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards, losing to Mark Ruffalo (“I Know This Much Is True”) both times. The good news for Hawke? Auditioning for a role on “Ted Lasso’s” AFC Richmond squad required not only acting chops but some credible soccer — excuse us, football — skills as well. “They had to be really good actors and play football really well,” casting director Theo Park tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: TV Casting Directors panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). “It was really exciting to see actors who I knew show me their amazing football skills.”
While most of those auditions were self-tapes, Park and her team had the actors kick around a ball in the parking lot for some of the smaller footballer roles. HBO’s “I May Destroy You” and “Industry” are two very different shows, but casting director Julie Harkin approached both in a similar way: shining a light on new or little-known talent.
With “I May Destroy You,” Harkin was instructed by creator, writer, co-director and star Michaela Coel to “give opportunity to people that wouldn’t necessarily get given the opportunities that we were giving them,” she shares during Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts: TV Casting Directors panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). “Michaela was a very open collaborator who just wanted to push inclusivity in terms of how we cast the show but also how everybody behaved behind the scenes. … She said to me very early on, ‘Go find the African-American, Black actors who have not had any screen opportunity to date and find me the actors of color who have not had their moments onscreen.

Those hoping Producers Guild Awards would provide an injection of drama into this extended Oscars season were left empty-handed on Wednesday night. As expected, “Nomadland” took home the PGA Award for Best Picture, the Searchlight film’s latest high-profile victory as it marches toward what seems like an inevitable Oscars win.

Part of the appeal of “The Masked Singer” is trying to figure out which famous faces are hidden beneath those masks. We nailed the identities of the first contestant from Group A who was sent packing at the end of the March 10 episode: Snail (Kermit the Frog). The rest of the contenders in Group A returned to compete again on March 24 disguised as the Porcupine, Raccoon, Russian Dolls and Seashell.

It’s well known that women are underrepresented behind the camera in Hollywood. This year’s Best Director Oscar nominations for Chloe Zhao (“Nomadland”) and Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”) are only the sixth and seventh nominations for women in that category, and it’s the first time in history two women have been nominated for that award at the same time. But Zhao and Fennell could also make history as writers.
If Zhao wins Best Adapted Screenplay and Fennell wins Best Original Screenplay for their respective films, it will be only the second time in history that women have won both awards in the same year, and the first time that no men have won as writers or co-writers. The last time women claimed both was 17 years ago, when Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens won the adapted prize for co-writing “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” with Peter Jackson,...

‘Promising Young Woman’ wins WGA Award for Best Original Screenplay; Oscar rival ‘Minari’ ineligible
Just as Gold Derby predicted, “Promising Young Woman” has won the WGA Award for Best Original Screenplay. Emerald Fennell‘s script about a brave barista who seeks revenge on creepy men who take advantage of drunk women at bars beat out the following four films at Sunday’s Writers Guild of America Awards: “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Sound of Metal” and “Palm Springs.” This line-up matches four-for-five with the Oscars, where “Palm Springs” has been replaced by “Minari,” which wasn’t eligible at the guild. Can Fennell continuing her winning ways at next month’s Academy Awards?

The far-and-away front-runner in our Golden Globes odds, Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit” looks unbeatable in the Best TV Movie/Limited Series category, judging from the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. But not so fast, I say! It’s nominated against Amazon’s “Small Axe,” Netflix’s “Unorthodox,” HBO’s “The Undoing” and Hulu’s “Normal People,” which trail it in that exact order in our odds. Here are six reasons why you should have “The Undoing” much higher in your predictions and shouldn’t be shocked if it snatches the “Queen’s” predestined crown.

Matthew Rhys‘s take on “Perry Mason” has already gone beyond Raymond Burr‘s when it comes to the Golden Globe Awards. Although Burr won Emmy Awards in 1959 and 1961 out of three consecutive nominations as the eponymous criminal defense lawyer, he was never recognized by the Globes for this iconic performance, which ultimately spanned 271 episodes and then 26 television movies from 1957 to 1993. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has now nominated Rhys’s portrayal of the character after a mere eight episodes of the HBO reboot, which tells an origin story with Mason as a private investigator.

Burr went on to six Emmy nominations and even two Globe nominations as “Ironside” years later; it was timing that cost him at the Globes as Mason. “Perry Mason” was never nominated for a Globe, but it won one in the form of a special award for its achievement in 1960 television.

When the 78th Golden Globe Awards take place on Sunday, February 28, look for some of the big TV winners to be Netflix’s drama “The Crown,” Pop’s comedy “Schitt’s Creek” and Netflix’s limited series “The Queen’s Gambit.” The 11 television prizes are often tough to predict as voters don’t usually follow the lead of their big sister, Emmy. Instead, Hollywood Foreign Press Association members tend to gravitate toward the newest shows and hottest stars. The 72nd annual Emmy Awards confirmed what “Schitt’s Creek” fans have known for years: the Canadian comedy series that exploded into the zeitgeist thanks to its availability on Netflix was one of the modern era’s best shows. At the Emmys last year, the final season of “Schitt’s Creek” swept the comedy categories, winning awards for Best Comedy, Best Actor in a Comedy for Eugene Levy, Best Actress in a Comedy for Catherine O’Hara, Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy for Dan Levy, and Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for Annie Murphy. All told, the final season of “Schitt’s Creek” made Emmys history last year, winning nine total awards. With a resume like that, it’s no wonder the series is favored to win Best Musical or Comedy Series at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday.

Emma Corrin took on the role of Diana Spencer in the fourth season of Netflix’s “The Crown.” And like the late Princess of Wales, Corrin immediately took center stage as critics and audiences raved about her performance. Now her work as Diana has earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best TV Drama Actress.
The fourth season of “The Crown” devotes a great deal of time to the turbulent marriage between Diana and Prince Charles (Best TV Drama Actor nominee Josh O’Connor). Diana struggles to find her place within the royal family while becoming a household name at home and abroad. However, the tension in her marriage, amplified by Charles’s affair with Camilla Parker Bowles (Emerald Fennell), begins to take a toll on Diana. After a shocking Emmy snub a few months ago, Bob Odenkirk is back at the Golden Globes. The “Better Call Saul” actor just picked up his fourth nomination in the Best TV Drama Actor category. After last year’s shocking Emmy omission, it seemed like the writing was on the wall for an exclusion at the Globes too. But viewers of the show know to never count out wily Jimmy McGill, who slipped back into the race. And no one was happier with the inclusion than his co-star Rhea Seehorn who tweeted, “Am I yelling? Michael Keaton already holds one of the most important titles in the world as The Best Batman in Cinematic History. However, the versatile actor could potentially add another important chapter to his legacy with a win at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, April 4. Nominated for Best Film Ensemble for Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Keaton would set a record by becoming the first person to win three film ensemble SAG Awards if the Netflix drama walks away with the top prize. The “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017) star previously won as a member of the casts of “Birdman” (2014) and “Spotlight” (2015).

With this year’s Grammy Awards getting closer and closer, talk about the impact of current cultural events like Black Lives Matter on nominations is growing. It’s almost inevitable that the awards will, in some way or another, reflect the current sociopolitical climate in the US and the world.
The Grammys have a history of problems with inclusion. Many have criticized them for not honoring predominantly Black genres like hip-hop and R&b in the general field as much as pop and rock. Consider the recent losses of massively acclaimed albums by Black artists, most noticeably “Lemonade” and “Beyoncé” by Beyoncé, “To Pimp A Butterfly” and “Damn” by Kendrick Lamar, and “Channel Orange” by Frank Ocean. Furthermore, hip-hop rarely wins in the Record and Song of the Year categories. As of 2020, only one hip-hop song has won those top honors (“This Is America” by Childish Gambino) despite hip-hop songs...
