Get ready to delve into The Music of Heatmiser. The Portland band best known as Elliott Smith’s pre-solo career springboard has announced a new rarities compilation arriving October 6th via Third Man Records, and a demo version of the track “Lowlife” is out now.
Heatmiser initially distributed The Music of Heatmiser — then a 6-song cassette — at local record stores and shows to promote the band before they released their 1993 debut LP, Dead Air. According to co-founding singer-guitarist Neil Gust, this longer package — featuring 23 additional demos, live tracks, rare versions, and previously unreleased songs — came together thanks to drummer Tony Lash.
“Tony found a bunch of forgotten recordings and started mixing them and sending them to me,” Gust said in a statement. “We were struck by the freewheeling energy of the band; you could hear how much fun we were having. In 1992 we could barely afford the studio so it...

Albert Hammond Jr, best known as the lead guitarist in The Strokes, has announced his fifth solo album, Melodies on Hiatus, out June 23rd on Red Bull Records. What’s more, he’s shared a handful of supporting tour dates (grab tickets here) and lead single “100-99” featuring Goldlink.
Besides GoldLink, Melodies on Hiatus features Rainsford, Steve Stevens, and Matt Helders. It was co-written remotely with Simon Wilcox, with premium mastering from Dave Cooley and mixing by Tony Hoffer. Pre-orders are ongoing.
“100-99” was partially inspired by the ’90s hip-hop Hammond Jr grew up listening to, he explained in a statement. “I would always gravitate towards the melodic hooks in the songs I heard on the radio, specifically anything Dr. Dre was producing or rapping on,” he said. “Years later, I noticed myself pulling from the style of those melodic lines in my guitar work, even though it wasn’t...

In his latest interview from this year’s Romford Horror Film Festival, Kevin sits down with eleven(!) members of the cast and crew of the new British horror anthology Video Shop Tales of Terror.
Six terrifying tales emanate from a sinister video shop in this British retro anthology movie and loving tribute to the 1980s VHS era. Every tale is handled by a respected indie horror director: Mj Dixon (Pandamonium), Sam Mason-Bell (Acting), Ciao Handy (Tales from the Great War), Alexander Churchyard (I Scream on the Beach!), Tom Lee Rutter (Day of the Stranger) and Michael Fausti (Exit). With faux trailers from Geoff Harmer (Dead Air) & Tony Mardon (The Witches of the Sands). Immerse yourself in two hours of retro horror nostalgia, from a bunch of people who love the era as much as you do! This is an anthology horror in the classic style of horror studios from the past but with a twist.

For the past month, news in the tabletop space was dominated by the battle between Wizards of the Coast and "Dungeons & Dragons" creators over the Open Game License (or Ogl). That controversy has come and gone (at least for the time being), leaving us space to once more discuss other tabletop news that intersects with popular culture. It doesn't have to be all "Dungeons & Dragons" all the time around these parts! We are equal-opportunity cardboard lovers.
In the latest edition of Cardboard Cinema, we're looking at an update to the much-beloved roleplaying game "Alice Is Missing" and a few movie-inspired RPGs in February's ZineQuest celebrations. We also share distressing news about everyone's favorite board game brawler, and the latest and greatest "Star Wars" game to grace our tables.

And now for something a little different. This week’s feature is a web series of a sort, but not the kind we usually call attention to here on Indie Spotlight. Today, we’re featuring Dead Air, a serial story written by New York Times-bestselling authors Gwenda Bond, Carrie Ryan, and Rachel Caine, and released through publisher Serial Box.
Dead Air tells the story of college student Mackenzie Walker, who, having recently found love for true crime podcasts, decides to make use of her midnight time slot at her college's radio station to dig into some crime stories herself. After she airs a segment about the decades-old murder of a local horsewoman whose prize horse was bound for the Kentucky Derby -- and whose killer confessed -- she receives a mysterious call from someone who says the case may not be as solved as she thinks...

Our ongoing roundup of the best serial fiction out there has just been updated with lots of new entries!
Serial fiction has come a long way since Dickens was writing--and publishing--it in the 1800s. Whether they draw on the style of Dickens, modeling after that popular serial storytelling venue (your television), or playing a game of exquisite corpse, serials have come back in a big way, bringing bite sized chunks of prose to your e-reading device. Some are written by a team of writers in Hollywood style, some by a single author emulating that screen narrative format, and some by one author after another (and no one knows where the story will end until it does). Each of these writing styles brings a unique serial reading experience in a fantastic variety of genres. Whether your taste runs to historical fiction (Julian Fellowes's Belgravia), urban fantasy...

The tenth annual Toronto After Dark Film Festival kicks off in a couple weeks and the festival has finally announced the second half of titles for this year’s lineup as well as the Canadian and International shorts. PopOptiq will once again be covering the event so be sure to check back at the end of the month. Here is the press release.
The Hallow (Ireland) Toronto Premiere
Possibly the scariest film in this year’s Toronto After Dark lineup, The Hallow from the producers of Let Us Prey terrified audiences at Sundance on its debut. After a young family move from the big city to a peaceful Irish woodland cottage, their dismissive attitude to folklore legends angers the local townspeople. It’s not long before the family members find themselves in a desperate fight for survival in a prolonged confrontation with some vicious creatures lurking in the forest.

Defiance concludes its third season with an effects-heavy episode, but is that the last we'll ever see of the show?
This review contains spoilers.
3.13 Upon The March We Fittest Die
What I can say with some certainty was that the effects budget for the entire show was mostly blown on this episode, in what I generally take to be its conclusion. It’s not as if the door is slammed shut for a potential return, but Syfy hasn’t yet announced Defiance's fate, and it could end here without too many unresolved aspects.
The title, Upon The March We Fittest Die, comes from American poet Walt Whitman’s poem Pioneers! O Pioneers! about the expansion West, and what a noble endeavour he saw in that. But before we can get to that somewhat tenuous linkage, we still have the Omec to deal with, and their seemingly indestructible leader, all-mother Kindzi.

The penultimate episode in Defiance's third run primes the season for a spectacular ending...
This review contains spoilers.
3.12 The Awakening
When I think back to many shows, not just science-fiction based, penultimate episodes are often much, much better than the finale that follows. Perhaps setting the dominos up is intrinsically a more satisfying experience than the short job of knocking them down.
Whatever the logic there was plenty in The Awakening for regular viewers of the show to enjoy, as Kindzi went on the rampage with her ravenous Omec children.
Being eaten alive is a fear that made Jaws a box office smash, but here it seems to be mostly designed to heighten the tension for those caged for consumption and to demonstrate what messy eaters the Omec are.
The scene in which Nolan and Irisa come across the Omec feeding demonstrates how formidable T’evgin could have been,...

3.11 Of A Demon In My View
The title of this episode is borrowed from a poem by Edgar Allan Poe. The whole line goes, “From the thunder and the storm / And the cloud that took the form / (When the rest of Heaven was blue) / Of a demon in my view”
How you personally mesh that with what happens on the show I’d say is up to you, but I took it as meaning that Kindzi was a constant threat and in this story she takes full form as the true nemesis of this season.
But before I get to her, I’d like to whine about how poor the opening sequence, in which Irisa was released from the overturned truck, was. People are generally unharmed when they...

Defiance habitually screws up its season endings. Is it about to make that mistake a third time?
This review contains spoilers.
3.10 When Twilight Dims The Sky
I’m not sure why writers like such hackneyed concepts as ’12 hours earlier’ starts to shows. This week's episode of Defiance rolled it out for another tired outing while managing to miss the whole point of the trick, which generally requires that you present a situation that couldn’t normally happen, thus confusing the viewer with how this may have come about. Except in this case, Nolan and Irisa being chased through the town and shot at isn’t anything but wholly predictable.
This was the start of a story that didn’t really work from the outset, and turned out to be more of a junction between the events of Rahm’s demise and the Omec conclusion we’re rapidly approaching.

The Omec take centre-stage in this week's eventful episode of Defiance...
This review contains spoilers.
3.9 Ostinato In White
After the wild ride of episode eight, one might reasonably assume that Ostinato In White might be less frenetic. However, with the Vc sub-plot neutralised, the Omec take centre stage in what turned out to be a rather messy diversion.
From the outset, this story is all over the place, trying to make you think that darling Doc Yewll has been ripped to pieces by some feral creature. Except this Yewll just doesn’t react like the one we’re used to, because she always has a plan.
That’s soon explained, linking back to earlier in the season when Kindzi took the Doc’s DNA, which she then failed to destroy when instructed to do so.
Sadly, much of this narrative doesn't make a great deal of sense, because if you...

With all these threats, why do the people of Defiance stay put? Here's Billy's take on the latest episode...

3.8 My Name Is Datak Tarr And I Have Come To Kill You
The show model of Defiance is one where they don’t tend to throw all their effort into the last two episodes of the season, instead generally looking to peak earlier. But watching My Name Is Datak Tarr And I Have Come To Kill You was something of a mind scramble even by Defiance standards.
The problem I have with the story, which is generally very good, is that it completes the Vc arc rather abruptly, and in doing so made me wonder why they’d lavished so much time on Rahm given his somewhat predictable end.
Let's start with Stahma and her Omec ship visitation. It’s explained that she’s there to see...

Defiance leaves its audience wondering what will happen next with a pivotal cliffhanger this week...
This review contains spoilers.
3.7 The Beauty Of Our Weapons
At best, The Beauty Of Our Weapons is a mediocre episode that ends with potentially a pivotal moment.
The plot, a meandering collection of character interactions, has three threads none of which involve Rahm Tak going crazy and extending his head collection.
There’s the fate of Datak, after he gets black-balled by the leadership in Defiance, including Doc Yewll, disturbingly. There's the chaos that Stahma’s arrival with the Omec creates, expectedly. And, old 90210 alumnus Ian Ziering turn up as Berlin’s love interest, charismatic weapon salesman, Conrad Von Bach.
You know from the point that he disables the weapons he’s given them with a single word that he’s going to betray them at some point, the question is when? Would that be...

Defiance's recent uptick in quality is proved no fluke as Syfy's space-Western delivers its strongest story yet this week...

3.6 Where The Apples Fell
The upturn in quality and narrative pace seen last week in Defiance continues unabated, in what is undoubtedly the strongest story yet. Though if I’m going to be critical, there isn’t so much a complete story, but significant character development that drives it forward here.
It starts with probably the two best actors, Tony Curran (Datak) and Jaime Murray (Stahma) dealing with the fallout from Alak’s return. It's a brilliant scene that takes one situation, flips it to another and then ends with a domino event that changes everything.
Up until this point, with a few exceptions, Alak hasn’t been a character I’ve especially warmed to, but here his real character is born, and in the same...

Up until this point, with a few exceptions, Alak hasn’t been a character I’ve especially warmed to, but here his real character is born, and in the same...

Greg James has become one of the most popular DJs in the country, but did you know he can also act?
The BBC Radio 1 DJ previously worked with the National Youth Theatre and studied drama at the University of East Anglia, and has now co-written and starred in his own comedy pilot, titled Dead Air.
James stars as late-night radio DJ Jake Cross in the 17-minute BBC iPlayer short, who is given the surprise job as the breakfast show host when the former presenter dies. He faces the dilemma of selling out or staying with his loyal fanbase. Digital Spy chatted to Greg James about his TV acting debut and his comedy heroes.
Dead Air must have been a lot of fun to make, has this been something you've wanted to do for a while?
"It's weird that people are now watching it, because it's been under lock and key for a long time.

3.5 History Rhymes
From the outset, History Rhymes was a much slicker and tighter narrative than we’ve been graced with so far this season.
The centre-piece is the often turbulent relationship between Nolan and Irisa, and how they’re now bonded together to share a common memory collection.
It might seem somewhat late in the process to give Nolan more backstory, but as this progressed, his failings and Irisa's were better revealed. As it went on, I began to wonder if Irisa is actually more guilt-ridden than Nolan, but surely the point is that only these two characters can understand the pain of the other, even if they’re not exactly bonding right now.
The only problem with the memory sequences was that taken out...

3.4 Dead Air
Well, I said in my previous review that they’d need a new title sequence if the arch was blown up, and guess what? There’s a new title sequence.
However, I’d back with hard cash that by the end of the season, by whatever means, the arch will be back and whole again. That said, it’s been half-fixed for more than two seasons, so it needed some serious corrective work or maybe a complete reconstruction. How any of it remains standing is a mystery, because the engineering of an arch doesn’t allow for the middle to be missing.
As a Defiance episode goes, this is yet another mixed bag, combining things I really liked with parts...

Of all of the Eighties slasher films released to Blu-ray within the past several years, it surprises me that Sleepaway Camp II and III hold up better than most of them. I never really considered myself to be a fan of this series when I was a kid. I had seen them a few times each, but it was never something I’d develop an itch to revisit. In the not-too-distant past, Dead Air Podcast did a full Sleepaway Camp retrospective series. I’m certain I appeared on at least one of the episodes, because I vividly recall digging my Survival Kit box set off of the shelves upstairs, and watching the three films for the occasion. It surprised me then, and it surprised me again now, that I enjoy these sequels far more than even I was prepared for. In all honestly, I think I prefer the second and...

Taylor Lautner will be back as Dale, who returns - transformed - to throw more spanners in the family works.

"Cuckoo is the quintessential BBC Three series - a grabby concept, world class talent and writers destined for greatness," said Shane Allen, Controller, Comedy Commissioning.
BBC Three has also ordered a new sitcom - originating from its Comedy Feed initiative - called Flat TV.
Created, written by and starring Tom Rosenthal and Naz Osmanoglu, the series follows two flatmates who battle against the realities of living together by imagining their lives through the prism of television.

Major’s attempts to expose the police’s apparent lack of concern over the missing skate park kids last week backfired in grand fashion, as he found himself locked up in a cell with a group of thugs who didn’t seem intent on befriending him. This week’s episode sees Major, clearly shaken by the fact that he spotted Julian transporting a human brain, double down on his research, alienating people along the way. Meanwhile, Ravi gets closer to finding a cure for being undead, while Liv gets a shock about Lowell in another compelling episode.

iZombie has always balanced the act of being an interpersonal drama and a supernatural murder mystery show. The split is usually about 50/50. In "Dead Air," there's murder, but the drive of the action is Liv interacting with her friends. Liv's brains forces her into an uncomfortable but very interesting conversation -- and iZombie does nothing but benefit from this change of approach.
Liv's weekly brains make her go all armchair therapist routine. It's a change that makes her quite annoying as a person, but it's quite fun to watch. Liv gets all involved and critical when it comes to her friend's relationship and turns the gaze back on herself.

They’ll whisper truths so twisted you can only face them in the darkest hours of the night. They’ll unlock desires so decadent you’ll never wash their taint from your flesh.

If your town is bigger than Peoria, there's a steady chance that Chvrches has swung by a few times in the past two years: The Scottish trio has been touring steadily in support of debut album The Bones of What You Believe since early 2013. In between concerts, though, the band still found time to contribute a new song, "Dead Air," to The Hunger Games: Mockingjay soundtrack, which was personally curated by Lorde herself. Vulture caught up with the band the day they played VH1's You Oughta Know concert to discuss what makes a great soundtrack song, how they've been dealing with online misogyny, and which of them would survive an actual Hunger Games. You recorded your first album before doing much touring. Now you've been on the road for nearly two years straight. Did your approach change on this song?Martin Doherty: It was the second time...

Every year for the past few years, a new "Hunger Games" movie has been unleashed on the world and those releases have come complete with a slew of tie-in merchandise, cunningly synergistic and essential in the studio's desire to build hype and awareness around the young-adult novel adaptations (which star Jennifer Lawrence and are based on books by Suzanne Collins, of course).
But the soundtracks to the films have become mini-events in and of themselves, able to build the kind of fervor the movies usually do (with just as much anticipation and speculation). We attended the junket for next week's "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1"over the weekend, and were handed a copy of the brand-new album (out now physically and digitally) and figured we should rundown the album properly. So here we go!

Ariana Grande is suiting up for "The Hunger Games." Sure, the diminutive pop star probably wouldn't last a minute against Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and the other tributes in the Games, but she can still take part in the "Mockingjay" revolt. Grande is collaborating with Major Lazer for a new song called "All My Love" which will be featured on the already overstuffed soundtrack to the upcoming threequel. The "Mockingjay Part I" soundtrack was curated by teen hitmaker Lorde and features a bevy of big names, including Haim, Chvrches, Charli Xcx, Grace Jones, Stromae featuring Pusha T, Q-Tip, Tove Lo, Simon Le Bon (of Duran Duran), and Raury, plus a Kanye West remix of Lorde's "Yellow Flicker Beat." Fans can get an immediate download of Chvrches' "Dead Air" when they pre-order the soundtrack on iTunes. When it was announced that “Royals” chanteuse Lorde had been tapped to curate the soundtrack for this fall’s hotly anticipated The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, general sentiment was that the young Grammy winner was a perfect choice for the task. Talented, zeitgeisty and uncommonly brooding, Lorde certainly fit with the increasingly heavy and dramatic tone of the penultimate franchise entry. And now, with the emergence of an official tracklist for the soundtrack she curated, it’s clear that we had good reason to be excited.
On the album, Lorde compiled a mixture of highly respected music icons, skilled up-and-comers and unexpected guests. The inclusion of The Chemical Brothers, who so memorably scored Joe Wright’s Hanna, is particularly thrilling, as is a completely out-of-left-field appearance from Kanye West, who’ll be reworking a song by Lorde (who herself appears on four tracks).

It’s quite an honor to curate the soundtrack for what will likely be the biggest film of the year, and Lorde is pulling out the big guns as well as lesser-known up-and-coming acts.
In addition to her own contributions, the “Royals” songstress has shared that Kanye West, Miguel, Chvrches and the Chemical Brothers are all included in the track listing.
Lorde shared, "Curating the soundtrack for such a hotly anticipated film was a challenge, but I jumped at the chance. The cast and story are an inspiration for all musicians participating and, as someone with cinematic leanings, being privy to a different creative process has been a unique experience. I think the soundtrack is definitely going to surprise people."
Still holding one surprise in her grasp, Lorde hasn’t announced what the 5th track on the album will be just yet.

Lorde rounded out her all-star "Hunger Games" soundtrack quite nicely, with all-new contributions from Haim, Charli Xcx, Kanye West, Grace Jones, Bat For Lashes, Miguel, the Chemical Brothers and more. The New Zealand-bred Grammy Award winner was charged with curating the sounds for "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1," and the resulting tracklist below. The song titles may not tell you much about what happens in the film, but they may help indicate at least a mood. We're extra curious about the "various" artist for ambiguous "Track 5" -- described as "an additional surprise track that will be revealed soon." Kanye West makes his mark on this set with a remix, of Lorde's previously released "Yellow Flicker Beat" (dubbed "Flicker"); Lorde also combined with Stromae, Pusha T, Q-Tip and Haim for a song called "Meltdown." The Chemical Brothers and Miguel collabarated, too, on "This Is Not A Game" (above...

Lionsgate has finally revealed the full tracklist -- minus one surprise song yet to be announced -- for the Lorde-curated soundtrack to "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1," and it's bursting with big names.
Among the musicians featured are Chvrches, Charli Xcx (featuring Duran Duran's Simon Le Bon), Grace Jones, Haim, Tove Lo, and a Kanye West remix of the soundtrack's first single, Lorde's "Yellow Flicker Beat." Another new track from Lorde is also on the album.
In addition to that lineup, Lionsgate has also released another single from the soundtrack: "This Is Not A Game," by The Chemical Brothers and featuring Miguel and a spoken-word loop from Lorde. Check out the audio for that track below, along with the full tracklist and album cover.

Nothing but the Lordiest from Lorde, whose curated Mockingjay soundtrack is as Lorde as it gets: Stromae featuring Pusha T, Q-Tip, and Haim; the Chemical Brothers featuring Miguel; Charli Xcx featuring Duran Duran's Simon Le Bon; and a track from the elusive Grace Jones. Even a Kanye remix of herself, because if you're given permission to curate something, you go to Kanye and ask him to remix you first. Here's the full track list: Stromae, “Meltdown” (feat. Lorde, Pusha T, Q-Tip, and Haim) Chvrches, “Dead Air” Tove Lo, “Scream My Name” Charli Xcx, “Kingdom” (feat. Simon Le Bon) [Track 5] Raury, “Lost Souls” Lorde, “Yellow Flicker Beat” Tinashé, “The Leap” Bat for Lashes, “Plan the Escape” Grace Jones, “Original Beast” Lorde, “Flicker" (Kanye West Rework) Xov, “Animal” The Chemical Brothers, “This Is Not a Game" (feat. Miguel And Lorde) Lorde, “Ladder Song” Track No. 5 remains a mystery, but Stereogum...
