Acclaimed animator’s unexpected return explores profound pain, relationships and elements of his own past in the company of typically surreal characters
The great Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki recently cancelled the retirement he had announced back in 2013 and wrote and directed this new feature film. In movie terms, it’s the equivalent of Prospero supergluing his staff back together and carrying on regardless. Does the magic still work?
Well, I found The Boy and the Heron a mysterious and charming fantasy that circles back to Miyazaki’s classic themes of childhood pain and grief and how these were forged in the fires of the second world war. It also brings home an authorial point that deserves wider discussion: Miyazaki has been influenced by classic English children’s literature. At various times, this reminds me of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Cs Lewis’s The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

It’s an interesting month ahead on Hulu, as the streamer rolls out some of the series it’s been keeping in its back pocket for the holiday season.
On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn fulfills the promise he made at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, when we spied a metal incubator in the chambers of Sovereign leader Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) that housed the artificial superbeing Adam Warlock. Now in the conclusion of Gunn’s trilogy, Adam emerges – albeit prematurely – from his cocoon, charged by his mother and the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji) with destroying the Guardians and returning Rocket (Bradley Cooper) to the latter, who created Rocket as part of his vile attempts at creating a perfect race.
Played by British actor Will Poulter, this version is quite different from the character most fans of Marvel Comics may be familiar with. Although rumors had circulated online for several months, it wasn’t until a recent New Yorker profile that confirmation arrived regarding Greta Gerwig tackling “The Chronicles of Narnia” film adaptations for Netflix. Gerwig is reportedly attached to direct two movies based on the famous C.S. Lewis fantasy novels.
“I haven’t even really started wrapping my arms around it, but I’m properly scared of it, which feels like a good place to start,” Gerwig told the Total Film podcast (via Entertainment Weekly) about entering Narnia. “I think when I’m scared, it’s always a good sign. Maybe when I stop being scared, it’ll be like, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t do that one.’ No, I’m terrified of it. It’s extraordinary. And it’s exciting.”

Barbie director Greta Gerwig will soon be shifting her focus to another mythical land as she’s been tapped to write and direct at least two Chronicles of Narnia movies for Netflix. While speaking on the Total Film podcast (via Entertainment Weekly), Greta Gerwig admitted that she’s “properly scared” of tackling Narnia.
“I haven’t even really started wrapping my arms around it, but I’m properly scared of it, which feels like a good place to start,” Greta Gerwig said of the Narnia movies. “I think when I’m scared, it’s always a good sign. Everyone expects Greta Gerwig’s Barbie to be a big hit, but it looks like the writer-director might be dipping her toe into another big franchise soon. Tucked away in a large New Yorker piece about the future of Mattel films comes a mention that Gerwig’s next job is to write and direct at least two Chronicles of Narnia films for Netflix.

Though Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated Barbie movie hasn’t hit theaters yet, Mattel Films is already looking forward to dozens of other projects in development based on its IP, including Daniel Kaluuya’s Barney adaptation. In a profile of the toy company’s film division published by The New Yorker, one executive called it an “A24-type” movie which will be “surrealistic” and similar to the work of Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze.
“We’re leaning into the millennial angst of the property rather than fine-tuning this for kids,” Mattel Films exec Kevin McKeon said about the Barney movie. “It’s really a play for adults. Not that it’s R-rated, but it’ll focus on some of the trials and tribulations of being thirtysomething, growing up with Barney — just the level of disenchantment within the generation.”

When James Gunn first brought the Guardians of the Galaxy to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was only a matter of time before the character of Adam Warlock was brought into the fold. The character was supposed to appear in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," but those plans, fortunately, fell through, paving the way for Will Poulter to age into the correct range to play the character. Fans have speculated the eventual Adam Warlock for years, with plenty fancasting predictions to show for it.
The comics have portrayed Adam Warlock as an otherworldly specimen of masculine perfection, as his artificial genetic structure has given him denser bone and muscle tissue, superhuman abilities, cosmic awareness, and dashing good looks. He's a hunky slice of fried gold, which is probably why fans focused heavily on fantasy booking him with Hollywood A-listers.

James McAvoy has firmly denied his involvement in a reboot of the Narnia films.
The Atonement and Split actor played Mr Tumnus in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe in 2005.
As the friendly faun – a man-goat hybrid – McAvoy starred with Tilda Swinton and a child cast of William Moseley, Anna Popplewell, Skandar Keynes, and Georgie Henley as the Pevensie siblings: Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy.
The Narnia franchise continued with Prince Caspian in 2008 and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in 2010. To date, the films have grossed a total of 1.5bn (£1.24bn) worldwide.
In a recent interview with GQ, McAvoy responded to a question about the prospect of appearing in a reboot of the Narnia films in the future.

Rita Wilson knew she wanted to bring the two Latino characters, played by Manuel Garcia Rulfo and Mariana Trevino, from “A Man Called Otto” into her song “Till You’re Home.” She fell in love with the vocals of Sebastián Yatra, who sang the Oscar-nominated “Dos Oruguitas” from Disney’s “Encanto” (2021). He had one day off and happened to be in Los Angeles, giving him one day to record the track. “We were incredibly lucky that he said yes,” says Wilson.
The actor, producer, singer and songwriter will enter the awards conversation for best original song for the upcoming Sony Pictures feature film, which stars her husband, Tom Hanks, and is directed by Marc Forster.
The track marks Wilson’s third eligible original song, which began with “Even More Mine” from “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” (2016) and “Everybody Cries” from “The Outpost” (2020), but this isn’t her first dabbles in the music world.

Georgie Henley, who played Lucy Pevensie in “The Chronicles of Narnia” film trilogy, revealed on Tuesday that when she was in college, a rare bacterial infection nearly led to the amputation of her right arm. After a series of “grueling” surgeries and grafts, doctors were able to save it, but she was left with scarring that she concealed from the public for nearly 10 years.
The actress, who is now 27, shared a photo to Twitter of herself showing off the scars on her arm, along with the caption, “finally free.”
In the accompanying screenshots, she wrote, “When I was eighteen years old and in my sixth year of university, I contracted necrotizing fasciitis, a rare and punishing infection that nearly claimed my life and wrought havoc throughout my body. How do you play a perfect person? That’s the challenge posed to actor Will Poulter, who’s preparing to play Adam Warlock in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
In a discussion with The Independent, Poulter described his process for getting into shape for the role. In short, it sounds a bit intense: “I wouldn’t recommend anyone do what I did to get ready for that job,” he told The Independent. In addition to spending lots of time in the gym, Poulter has been adhering to what he calls “a very, very specific diet.” That diet includes “quantities of food you wouldn’t necessarily want to ingest. And other times not enough food.”
Outside of his diet, Poulter can reveal little about his character. “It’s difficult talking about it because with Marvel it’s all secret squirrel…but the most important thing is that your...

Endeavor Content has come on board as the global sales agent for “The Panthers,” a music-influenced social justice drama series from New Zealand.
It was Friday confirmed that the series will make its international premiere as an official selection at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival, as part of the Primetime program.
The six, hour-long episodes, based-on-a-true-story series covers a devastating and resonant period in New Zealand’s history through the dramatization of the founding of The Polynesian Panthers – a revolutionary social justice movement directly inspired by the Black Panther movement in the U.S.
The 1974-set narrative follows a young man who is the black sheep of his Tongan family who is frustrated by his community being stuck in a broken economic and criminal justice system. In the face of increasingly aggressive racial-profiling from the government and police force, he forms his own revolutionary movement The Polynesian Panthers, while also...

Eclectic director of documentaries and feature films, from Seven Up! to James Bond
Michael Apted, who has died aged 79, was a director who moved with ease between socially conscious documentaries and feature films with a special focus on female achievement.
In the latter camp was Coal Miner’s Daughter (1980), for which Sissy Spacek won the best actress Oscar for playing the country and western singer Loretta Lynn, and Gorillas in the Mist (1988), starring Sigourney Weaver as the murdered conservationist Dian Fossey. He also enjoyed commercial success with the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough (1999) and the Cs Lewis adaptation The Chronicles of Narnia: the Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010).

Michael Apted was 22 when he joined the crew of “Seven Up!,” a British made-for-television documentary that profiled 14 children from different class backgrounds. That made him 15 years senior to his subjects, with whom he maintained contact, establishing an almost familial connection that spanned more than half a century.
Apted did not direct the original 1964 documentary, as is commonly thought, nor was that initial installment such an important landmark in the field of nonfiction filmmaking. The breakthrough came in Apted’s decision to continue the project with an hour-long follow-up TV movie seven years later, “7 Plus Seven” — and again every seven years after that — revisiting as many of the children as would agree to participate as they grew up, found their ways in life, fell in love, married, divorced and so on.

A chorus of Happy Birthday, please, for one Michael Theodore “Mickey” Mouse, who reaches the grand old age of 92 this month. As befits his advanced years, Mickey will likely be celebrating with a swig or two of Pepto Bismol and the Band of Brothers DVD boxset. Or, if he fancies, he could always fire up Disney + UK and catch some new episodes of The Mandalorian (starting Friday the 30th of October) The Simpsons, and Agents of Shield, all of which will be on the streaming service in November.
(Though now I think about it, Mickey Mouse lives in America, doesn’t he? So he’ll already have seen most of that. And Noelle, the new Anna Kendrick Christmas film that came out in the US last year. Some people have it all.)
Here’s what’s new on Disney Plus UK this November:
6 November
The Simpsons season 31
13 November
Marvel’s Agents of S.

It’s Friday, and that means it’s time for the latest haul of new titles to hit Disney Plus. Similar to last week’s load, this October 9th delivers a decent batch of fresh content, including a bunch of new TV episodes, some National Geographic documentaries and, most notably, a couple of classic movies, such as another one of Fox’s X-Men films. The best of the lot, in fact.
Yup, 2003’s X2 is available on D+ from today. The second instalment in the X-franchise is still considered one of the finest of the whole series. Hugh Jackman stars as Logan, who discovers the forgotten secrets of his past when he returns to Alkali Lake to confront the wicked General Stryker (Brian Cox), who wants to use Professor X to wipe out mutantkind.

Back in November of 2019 (which seems like a lifetime ago), Disney+ launched with what would become its premier title: The Mandalorian. Now here we are just under a year later and it’s finally time for the next installment of Disney+’s Star Wars journey.

Rest assured that the itty bitty Baby Yoda will be returning once again. And be sure to catch up all the other secrets the trailer holds here.

With October quickly approaching, it’s time to start looking ahead to what’s coming to all our favorite streaming services next month, and as usual, Disney Plus is first out of the gate in regards to announcing what’s on the way. We’ll get to the full list shortly, but clearly, the big highlight for many will be season 2 of The Mandalorian.
Though it took a while for the Mouse House to begin the marketing campaign for it, the past few weeks have brought us photos, posters and, of course, a stunning full-length trailer for the show’s next run, all of which promise another thrilling adventure. Rumors of behind the scenes turmoil aside, all signs point to The Mandalorian making another big splash on the platform with its second season and we can’t wait to see what Baby Yoda and Mando get up to next.

Children of the 2000s may have grown up with the three live-action movies produced between 2005-2008 and anyone of any generation may have read C.S. Lewis’ classic novels as a kid, but a new version of The Chronicles of Narnia is on the way. Netflix acquired the rights to adapt the seven fantasy books back in 2018 and immediately announced their plans to create new TV series and films based on the world of Narnia.
So, what have we learned about the company’s intentions for the franchise since then? Well, honestly, not much, as it appears the streaming giant is taking its time in building up a massive shared universe before they start putting anything into production. Out of all the potential literary franchises that started appearing with increasing regularity to try and cash in on the success of The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter during the early years of the 21st Century, it appeared for a while as though The Chronicles of Narnia was one of the few destined for any sort of continued success.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was a huge hit, becoming one of the highest-grossing movies of 2005 after raking in $745 million at the box office, but despite spawning two sequels, the adaptations of C.S. Lewis’ fantasy series never managed to recapture those heights. Both Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader earned over $300 million less than the opening installment, and any plans for further adventures in Narnia were ultimately shelved.

The Walt Disney Company has lately made something of an artform out of reimagining its own animated features into (often) billion-dollar live-action films, starting with Alice in Wonderland in 2010 and continuing with Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin, as well as the photorealistic computer animated remake of The Lion King.

Amazon Studios has confirmed it will shoot its The Lord of the Rings series in New Zealand, with pre-production already underway and the shoot to kick off in Auckland in coming months.

And we’re happy that we are now able to officially confirm New Zealand as our home for our series based on stories from J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Lord of the Rings’,” said showrunners and executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay in a statement.
