Netflix has included another animated series in its catalog and this time, and this time it’s the rebirth of an extremely nostalgic franchise, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. Lara Croft has been an insanely popular character and she deserves all kinds of adaptations.
However, the recent animated series teased by Netflix has received some criticism due to its Japanese-inspired art style. While it looks good and has good action scenes, you can’t help but shake off the feeling that it is trying to imitate anime.
Is Netflix’s Tomb Raider an Anime?

No, Netflix’s Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft is not an anime series. It is created by Powerhouse Animation Studios which is based in Austin, Texas. Thus, the upcoming project is an animated series and not an anime.

Anya Taylor-Joy plays the younger version of Imperator Furiosa, a character earlier played to perfection by Charlize Theron, in the upcoming George Miller film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Taylor-Joy had a rough six months shooting for the film in the wastelands of Australia, often sacrificing her sleep and weekends for the same. She revealed that when she watched the unedited black-and-white footage of the film, she couldn’t even go through the first three minutes without crying.

1954's "The Creature From The Black Lagoon" was the last gasp of Universal Pictures' black-and-white horror heyday. Pivoting away from literary adaptations towards something more resembling contemporary man-in-suit monster movies, "Black Lagoon" introduced one last staple of the Universal Monster line-up: The Gill-man. A missing link in the evolutionary chain, the amphibian man has the same mix of terror and lovelorn pathos as his monstrous brethren.
It's not quite the pop-culture staple that "Dracula" and "Frankenstein" are, but "The Creature From The Black Lagoon" has been reimagined many times (most famously in 2017 with Guillermo del Toro's Best Picture-winning oddball romance "The Shape of Water" — it was almost black-and-white like "Black Lagoon" too). Now a new comic book starring the Gill-Man comes forth from Skybound Entertainment, boasting a title that belongs to a forgotten Universal Horror picture: "The Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives!"
Skybound isn't just revitalizing "The Transformers" and "G.I. Joe.

Well, it's official — Netflix's live-action remake of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" paid off (for the company at least). Avatar Aang (Gordon Cormier) will get to continue mastering the elements, now that "Avatar" has been renewed for seasons 2 and 3.
"Avatar" is just the latest anime that Netflix has brought to live-action. On this spectrum, "Avatar" falls below the well-received "One Piece" remake but ahead of the swiftly-canned live-action "Cowboy Bebop" (that even original series creator Shinichirō Watanabe couldn't finish).
Netflix hasn't stopped there. The streamer is letting "Stranger Things" creators the Duffer Brothers take a crack at "Death Note" and has had a live-action "Gundam" movie in development since 2021. Other studios are getting into anime properties as well: Lionsgate has recruited "Shang-Chi" director Destin Daniel Cretton to adapt "Naruto" into a live-action movie.

The Monsters are March-ing in this month to participate in Super7 x Boodega‘s first Halloween celebration of the year: March of the Monsters. Bloody Disgusting can exclusively reveal that the densely packed “March of the Monsters” line includes ReAction Figures for horror hosts/icons Svengoolie and Vincent Price.
Brian Flynn, founder of Super7, spoke with Bloody Disgusting to explain more about Super7 x Boodega’s “March of the Monsters” line, its impetus, and what’s ahead.
“Boodega started as, obviously, a celebration of Universal Monsters,” Flynn tells Bloody Disgusting. “But it was also part of our core DNA, which was celebrating monsters, and we’re like, what’s our Halloween holiday? We need more than just the 31st. I need all month. I need time. So, that was the impetus behind Boodega, and that was really us, actually. Last year, Skybound Entertainment, the company founded by David Alpert and The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, teamed up with Universal Pictures not only to bring us the Dracula comedy Renfield, but also the four-issue comic book limited series Universal Monsters: Dracula. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that there’s another Universal Monsters comic book series coming out of this Skybound and Universal partnership: Universal Monsters: Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives! Like the Dracula series, the Creature from the Black Lagoon series will consist of four issues, but while the Dracula comic was an adaptation of the classic Universal film, this Creature from the Black Lagoon series tells “a brand-new story featuring beloved Gill-Man.”

Guillermo del Toro is working on his own adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and Deadline reports today that Jacob Elordi will take over the role of Frankenstein’s iconic monster for actor Andrew Garfield.
Elordi joins previously announced cast members Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and Oscar Isaac, who will play Victor Frankenstein.
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein follows brilliant scientist Victor Frankenstein, who brings his monster to life in an experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation. It feels safe to assume that del Toro will bring heightened emotions and sympathy for Frankenstein’s creation.
The acclaimed filmmaker previously said of his Frankenstein at the 10th-anniversary screening of Pacific Rim, “I’m doing Frankenstein. We’re working on it. We start shooting in February, and it’s a movie I have been wanting to do for 50 years since I saw the first Frankenstein.

Early last year, Jason Blum’s Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster joined forces to cook up the clever killer doll horror movie M3GAN, a box office hit, and just this week announced their official merger to become the preeminent horror producer bringing together the brains behind some of the most successful films in the genre of the 21st century.
On the heels of the merger confirmation comes Night Swim. Unfortunately, this one is waterlogged, only proving that making a credible killer pool movie is not as easy as playing with dolls.
Based loosely on Rod Blackhurst and Bryce McGuire’s 2014 four-minute short about a woman who disappears into her movie after a spooky encounter in the backyard, that pair are now credited with the story for this feature adaptation, with a screenplay by McGuire who also directs. As it turns out four minutes was the right length for the idea,...

HeBGB TV was among my favorite films I saw at Salem Horror Fest earlier this year, so I’m delighted that the frenetic horror-comedy anthology has made its way to Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting’s streaming service Screambox in time for Halloween.
In my review, I called it “a high-camp blend of the wistful glow of Wnuf Halloween Special, the uninhibited hyperactivity of Rick and Morty‘s “Interdimensional Cable” episodes, and the absurd unpredictability of Adult Swim’s Too Many Cooks.”
What I didn’t mention was all nods to genre favorites peppered throughout the film.
Here are 17 horror references in HeBGB TV.
1. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers
HeBGB TV’s opening credits are inspired by the Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers title sequence, which perfectly captures the autumnal atmosphere.
2. Creature from the Black Lagoon
The boy in the opening scene is playing with a Creature from the Black Lagoon figure.

We’re deep into Halloween season now, and one batch of movies I like to revisit around Halloween are the monster movie classics from Universal – as well as the non-Universal 1987 monster mash The Monster Squad. I’m sure it’s the same for a lot of horror fans. So, of course, October was the perfect time to announce that Universal Monsters: The Official Coloring Book will be reaching store shelves next year! It does have the random release date of July 16, 2024… but that just means we’ll have three months to secure our copies before Halloween season rolls around again. In fact, you can secure your copy right now by putting in a pre-order on Amazon.

That’s because the release of the box set has been delayed until February of 2024.
Our friends at Bloody Disgusting shared the following message from Universal: “Due to an unexpected packaging issue, the originally planned October 3, 2023 release of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s upcoming 4K collectible box set of the “Universal Classic Monsters Limited Edition Collection” is moving to February 13, 2024. We appreciate your patience and are very sorry for the inconvenience.”

Eric Newman didn’t set out to be a writer. In fact, segueing to writing, much less showrunning, wasn’t even his idea. The veteran producer, whose résumé was lined with films like Children of Men and Dawn of the Dead, was down in Colombia making Narcos when, he says, Netflix urged him to take the reins. “It was out of the absolute chaos of Narcos‘ first season that I became a showrunner,” Newman explains. “It was Netflix that said, ‘Hey, you’re down there holding it together. You do it.’ “
Nearly a decade later, he has multiple projects in various stages of development and moves fluidly between behind-the-scenes roles. His reputation for getting stuff made earned the 52-year-old father of three overall deals for film and TV at Netflix, where he’s also produced The Watcher, Bright and, soon, Painkiller, a Peter Berg-directed drama about the opioid crisis.

In the animated short film "COLORs," one of five created for Toho Animation's 10th anniversary, a high school girl discovers that her classmate presents as a woman outside of school. She follows them around the city, from a coffee shop to a festival to a forest bursting with fall colors. When they announce one day that they are transferring elsewhere, the girl is overcome with sorrow.
She leaves her apartment to go find them, perhaps to tell them how she really feels. But then, out of nowhere, a warning siren rings. The city bursts into flames as a great sphere hangs in the sky. Soldiers engage the unseen enemy. Amidst the chaos, the girl finds her former classmate and embraces her. Her classmate kisses her on the forehead, and then joins the army.

Today marks a tragic moment in Hollywood history, as Ricou Browning, the Gill-man himself and the last remaining actor to play a Universal Classic Monster. has passed away at 93. The actor's daughter Kim Browning told The Hollywood Reporter that his death at his Southwest Ranches, Florida residence was due to natural causes. She added, "He had a fabulous career in the film industry, providing wonderful entertainment for past and future generations." Browning was a cinematic, nautical legend, and his unique skill set kept him working in the field for most of his life. He famously claimed he could hold his breath for over four minutes, which isn't hard to believe considering his line of work.
Browning's appearance in the 1954 feature "Creature from the Black Lagoon" created another monstrous icon for Universal, which had already turned horror characters like Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, and the Wolf-Man into mainstream celebrities. Although Ben Chapman...

There’s sad news to report this evening, as it has been announced that Ricou Browning – who was the last surviving actor to have played a classic Universal Monster, since he portrayed the Gill-Man in the underwater scenes in all three entries of the Creature from the Black Lagoon trilogy; Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), Revenge of the Creature (1955), and The Creature Walks Among Us (1956) – has passed away at the age of 93. The Hollywood Reporter notes that his daughter Kim confirmed he passed away yesterday, just eleven days after his birthday.
Born in Fort Pierce, Florida on February 16, 1930, Browning started his career in the entertainment industry by working in water shows at tourist attractions and performing in underwater newsreels. We’ve lost another true legend in the world of horror. Bloody Disgusting has learned today that Ricou Browning, known for playing the titular Creature from the Black Lagoon in Universal’s original 1954 horror classic, has passed away this week at the age of 93.
Ricou Browning played the Gill-Man for the film’s extensive underwater sequences, and he subsequently reprised the iconic role in the sequels Revenge of the Creature (1955) and The Creature Walks Among Us (1956).
An underwater cinematographer and stuntman, Ricou Browning was uniquely equipped to play the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and he went on to direct the underwater sequences in films including Thunderball (1965), Hello Down There (1969), Caddyshack (1980), and Never Say Never Again (1983). Browning made his directorial debut with 1973’s sea lion movie Salty, and he notably also co-created the classic “Flipper” franchise. Browning later directed the movie Mr. No Legs (1978), centered on a man with shotguns built into his wheelchair.

For as long as we humans have been making art, we've been making art about the things that scare us. Horror as a genre has existed in every form, from macabre paintings to spooky songs to the tremendously popular horror movies that have terrified generations of thrillseekers who love the creeping dread of heroes pitted against monsters of every shape and size. Many different aspects of our culture have been indelibly marked by horror -- including the seemingly innocent and innocuous board game.
Of course, there are plenty of movies about games turning deadly, but we're not talking about your ouija boards or even party games like "Bodies Bodies Bodies." No, we're here to discuss friends turning into traitorous villains, vintage monsters raiding cursed towns, hotels you never check out of, and endless onslaughts of ghosts. Our list covers 10 perfect pairings between a spooky, scary movie night and blood-curdling board...

This December, one of director Guillermo del Toro’s long-held passion projects, a stop-motion animated version of Pinocchio, will premiere on Netflix after a limited run in theaters. Del Toro has long wanted to adapt the original 1881 novel, previously saying, “No single character in history has had as deep of a personal connection to me as Pinocchio.”
We’re glad that the esteemed Mr. del Toro—not just one of our finest modern filmmakers, but one of our most influential proponents of all things fantastical—has finally gotten to make Pinocchio just the way he wanted. But the truth is that it’s just one of many, many projects that del Toro has developed or been attached to over the years that nevertheless eluded him. This one just has a happier ending than many of the other projects.
That’s of course the life of any filmmaker. The idea is...

A child’s not very mysterious disappearance and the violent death of her father at the hands of something monstrous form the core of Nix, a structurally ambitious but performatively weak offering from prolific Sharknado director Anthony C Ferrante. Flitting back and forth in time, it deals with the loss of young Tessa (Angelina Karo) and the subsequent collapse of her family, which includes a mother who can’t let go (latterly played by Dee Wallace of E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial fame); brother Lucas, who becomes a drug addict (Skyler Caleb); boring normal brother Jack, who defaults to being the hero (James Zimbardi); and the addict’s young daughter Zoey (Niesha Renee Guilbot). Whilst they chip away at one another’s remaining ability to cope, Jack tries to protect Zoey and untangle the secrets of the past.
It all seems to hinge on a strange, Creature From The Black Lagoon-style beastie which inhabits.

Two decades after making his debut with werewolf war movie “Dog Soldiers,” Neil Marshall offers another spin on military-vs.-monsters action in “The Lair,” a semi-return to form that’s energetic if uninspired and increasingly silly. Nonetheless, it represents a bit of a rebound after the disasters of last year’s “The Reckoning” and an unhappy “Hellboy” reboot he disowned. This first issue from Scarlett Prods., the company he founded with star, co-writer and executive producer Charlotte Kirk, gets released by Rlje Films to limited U.S. theaters as well as VOD and digital Oct. 28. It’s hard to forget one of the first disabled women I ever saw on the big screen. In the 1989 adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, “Pet Sematary,” Zelda (Andrew Hubatsek), the deceased sister of Rachel Creed (Denise Crosby), suffers from spinal meningitis. She is seen predominately in flashbacks, and Zelda becomes a literal and metaphorical ghost who haunts Rachel throughout the film. Zelda is skeletal, her spine deformed.
To see Zelda in the film is to see a monster.
Growing up with a bone disability, Zelda utterly terrified me, because I had no other disabled women, on screens large or small or elsewhere, to compare her to. To me, I wasn’t just scared of Zelda because the movie portrayed her as a villain, I was scared because I worried that this is what disabled women ended up like. That this is what I was going to end up like.

The Munsters are, by design, a comedic reinvention of the classic monsters – Herman is Frankenstein’s monster, Lily is a vampire, Grandpa is Count Dracula, and Eddie is a werewolf – but other interpretations of iconic creatures occasionally made appearances.
Before TV’s first family of fright returns in Rob Zombie’s The Munsters, let’s look back at six classic monsters that have appeared in The Munsters Universe up to this point.
Creature from the Black Lagoon
Despite only appearing on screen for about a minute and a half, Uncle Gilbert is perhaps the most memorable member of the Munsters’ extended family. The reason is simple: he’s the Gill-man from the Creature from the Black Lagoon franchise.
In “Love Comes to Mockingbird Heights”, Uncle Gilbert sends the family 180,000 worth of gold doubloons from the old country for safekeeping until he arrives to visit. This inciting incident sets the plot in motion,...

It’s a case of cold-blooded, premeditated nostalgia: Abbott & Costello’s fantasy musical is innocent comedy rooted in early ’50s kiddie entertainment — a vein perfectly suited to the duo’s talents. Lou Costello makes a fine underdog fantasy hero, too. The feature restoration is quite an achievement for the 3-D Archive, as cine-archeology was required to understand the arcane color process ‘SuperCineColor.’ But the show’s slapstick action, clever songs and dippy dancing are finally back and looking great. The labor of love extends to the extras: excised scenes, background material, some words from the only surviving actor, a learned piece on the color process and a surprise guest appearance by the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Guillermo del Toro’s freaky noir brings back a neglected genre, and Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett offer masterclass performances
At the time of writing, Nightmare Alley is the longest of long shots for the Academy Award: it’s the complete outsider at the bookies, and absolutely no one is tipping it. But just because it won’t win the best picture Oscar doesn’t mean it shouldn’t. It’s a big, brash picture in the old style, stuffed with heavyweight performers oozing class, and put together with seemingly effortless aplomb by director Guillermo del Toro – who of course has pedigree at this level, having won this very award in 2018 with The Shape of Water.
Now, The Shape of Water was admittedly a bit lucky to win ahead of Dunkirk, Phantom Thread and Get Out, but perhaps its eccentricity and Creature from the Black Lagoon references made it distinctive.

Don't let the title of Howard R. Cohen's Saturday the 14th fool you. Despite being released in theaters after both Friday the 13th (1980) and Friday the 13th: Part 2 (1981), Saturday the 14th has absolutely nothing to do with the iconic slasher franchise. Instead, it takes a satirical look at Hammer horror and Universal monsters, while also laying on a very thick layer of sight gags and jokes - that sometimes stick the landing. John Hyatt, the patriarch of the family, makes a sandwich - during a rather random moment in the movie - that consists of what looked like various deli meats, cheese, a tomato, and topped off with a bit of peanut butter. For any of our readers who may be interested in watching this movie after reading this retrospective, that sandwich is a lot like this movie. There are too many ideas, references, and jokes that don't mesh well together,...
