Did you know..... there's a good German television program?

Warning: Spoilers
It's always interesting to read or hear about a new German television program. It's interesting because in general you don't have to ever watch it to know it's... well, not very good. (And you usually won't, if you have any form of self-respect left) And also it's generally a very safe bet to say that it's going to be canceled in the not so distant future ("two weeks ago").

And that is the point where KDD comes in and is so much better than anything I have seen on television over the last few years - including the inevitable and I guess lucrative American shows. Not that there's anything wrong about CSI, but if I had to chose I'd definitely stick to the gritty and entertainingly inconvenient story lines of KDD's "exaggerated reality". Sure, it doesn't seem very... likely ... that there's actually so much drama going on in the life of ordinary policemen and -women. But the cases themselves are very credible, very human, and so are the main characters. Again: I don't think that actual people could ever be on the verge of depression, paranoia and pitiful helplessness as much as the people shown on screen, and yet you can't help but hope that everything is going to turn out alright for them (which I can assure you is not going to happen. Ever. Thank god.) Actually these are not even crime stories in the traditional sense of the word. The crimes themselves are not what matters, it's the criminals, who are over and over again wretched and in every sense of the word screwed-up people. Then again not every murderer or rapist gets caught, and not every drug-dealer or kidnapper is a bad person at heart. The photography is as brilliant as the writing, finding a good, solid middle course between cutting-too-rapidly and using-hour-long-shots (the things that usually happen on German television).

And of course no review of KDD would be complete without mentioning the actors who to me all seem brilliant in their own way. You simply believe they are their respective characters. And that's really the best and only compliment you can pay them, I think.

Also: Melika Foroutan just looks hot like hell. AND: Her character - as emotional and impulsive as she may be - to me seems to be the only one truly rational around. Except maybe for Jürgen Vogel's "Han" who too is very physical, sexual, but at the same time incredibly determined and self-assured. Just a thought.

Maybe I was just expecting too much

but altogether I was greatly disappointed by 'KDD – Kriminaldauerdienst'. Yes, it is better than 99% of the usual dreck that is on German TV, but that doesn't really mean much. Yes, it's a decent show with some ambition and good actors. But can it compete with the great international TV shows? Unfortunately there's no way it can.

While hailed as the German "The Wire" it falls spectacularly short of that admittedly very high standard. One of my main criticisms would be the lack of realism. While Berlin is one of the rougher German cities, the amount of major crime that happens in this series is nothing short of ridiculous. Also, the minor crimes that get interspersed between the main story lines are, while often based on good ideas, completely cliché- ridden. It's a bad sign when you know who did it long before the cops do or criminals mess up in the most ridiculous ways. Apparently, it's also incredibly easy to get criminals to confess their crime simply by simply insulting them in a way vaguely connected to the crime.

Like so many other shows, it's mainly the writing that lets down 'KDD'. While not necessarily bad, it's just filled with way too many flaws. Occasionally bad dialogue, the afore-mentioned story cop-outs and dei- ex-machina, and general over-dramatisation drag the show down and sometimes even give it a soap-opera feeling, when characters continually get involved in outrageous story lines and half of the police department have affairs with one another.

'KDD' is far from bad, though. It shows ambition with presenting multiple story lines and arcs at the same time, portraying almost nothing as black and white, and not neatly wrapping up everything within the 45 minutes episodes. It's also decently shot, features good actors most of the time, and has a lot of good ideas. If you are able to suspend your disbelief a lot, it is (alongside 'Im Angesicht des Verbrechens') probably the most entertaining, ambitious, and simply best show that German TV has created within the last 20 years or so.

Completely underestimated series - one of the best that German television has ever produced.

Years before the wave of excellently written and casted TV shows spill over to Europe via HBO, Netflix and Amazon, there were already high-quality series to watch.

Especially "KDD - Kriminaldauerdienst" stands out here. "KDD" is stirring, exciting, dramaturgically great and well played. Actors, director, screenplay - everything fits together and leads to a series that was rightly showered with awards.

Unfortunately, only a few viewers had recognized this. On a broadcaster that is known until today mainly for television for pensioners, before the time of the streaming breakthrough unfortunately "KDD" had no chance
