Jenny Buckland.
One of the major but less recognised benefits of continuing to fund children’s television in Australia is the long tail of overseas sales for multiple series, according to Jenny Buckland.
“A number of Australian shows sell broadly for many years; exports are an incredible opportunity,” says the CEO of the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (Actf).
“It’s a real success story,” she told Screen Producers Australia CEO Matt Deaner in a webinar on Tuesday. “Whenever Australian broadcasters say kids don’t like these shows, we’ve pointed out how huge certain series are in the UK or Germany or Sweden or Japan. These shows last for a very long time.”
Buckland pointed to Jonathan M Shiff Productions’ Mako Mermaids, which in 2017 delivered more net returns to investors from overseas buyers than any other TV drama that Screen Australia had invested in since its inception.

Hunter Page Lochard in 'Cleverman' season two..
When Goalpost Pictures. Rosemary Blight visited Weta Worksop in Wellington to discuss ideas for the new world in Cleverman season 2, the firm.s founder Sir Richard Taylor had an inspired suggestion.
.Let.s create an iconic Hairy that no one will ever forget,. Taylor said. To play the character named Jarli the Bindawu warrior, the producers cast Clarence Ryan, who first worked for Goalpost as a teenager in the children.s series Lockie Leonard 10 years ago. He played Egg, Lockie.s best friend.
Jarli is one of several new characters which make the sequel .bolder, even bigger and better and more compelling as we put the characters under even more pressure,. Blight told If.
Directed by Wayne Blair and Leah Purcell, the six-part futuristic sci-fi drama co-produced by Goalpost and New Zealand.s Pukeko Pictures premieres at 9.30 pm on June 29 on the ABC and at 10 pm on June 28 on Sundance TV in the Us..
The story picks up with the destruction of the Zone and the Hairy people splitting up as they hide around the city in fear for their lives. Koen (Hunter Page-Lochard), the chosen Cleverman, sets out to harness his powers in hopes of bringing all the cultures together..
His half-brother Waruu (Rob Collins) shares the same vision but his methods are dubious. For Koen to realize his mission, he must defeat Waruu and the full force of the government..
The writers are Jane Allen, Stuart Page, Justine Juel Gillmer, the series creator Ryan Griffen and Jada Alberts.
Among the new characters, Luke Ford plays Dolan, who forms a relationship with Nerida (Alberts), while Taylor Ferguson (Strangerland) is Audie. Blight predicts Ferguson is destined to become a star in the Us.
The ensemble cast includes Iain Glen (Game of Thrones), Frances O.Connor (The Missing), Deborah Mailman (Offspring) and Rachael Blake (Rake). Weta created all the Hairies in the new world and the props they use.
For viewers who missed the first series, it is now screening on ABC iview and the sequel will include a recap..
ABC head of scripted production Sally Riley said, .The Cleverman world expands in this thrilling second season introducing new characters and deepening relationships with our established characters. It.s an exciting ride for new and returning audiences..
Blight is happy with the 9.30 timeslot, noting that the target audience is rather younger than traditional ABC viewers, who often watch shows on their mobile phones, tablets and on catch-up.
BBC3 and Tvnz are on board again and the international distributor Red Arrow International has sold the series to a raft of other territories including Germany, Canada and South Africa. Now there are 12 episodes it will be easier to sell to the remaining markets.
The producers screened the first two episodes at the Sydney Film Festival and were gratified when audience members said they wanted to see more.
Will there be a Cleverman 3? Blight said: .We are heading into the writers. room for early development of season 3 in the next couple of weeks. We are going into the room to discover what the underlying theme would be..

Ebonnie Masini and Rian McLean in 'Round the Twist' (1989), Australian Children's Television Foundation
Australian children.s TV may have recently picked up an Emmy Kids award for the Abcme animation Doodles, but otherwise kids. TV in this country is in a dire state.
Free-to-air TV networks have to commission certain amounts of children.s programs each year. But in recent years there.s been a dismaying lack of new live action shows, or recognisably Australian content. Instead, local children.s TV has become dominated by animation with little sense of place.
This is a shame, because Australia.s most fondly remembered children.s TV shows are live action productions such as Mortified, Playschool, Blue Water High, and Round the Twist. When asked in a 2015 survey to name their favourite childhood TV characters, most people chose Round the Twist siblings Linda and Bronson, followed by Mortified.s Taylor Fry.

Filmmaker Josh Wakely’s Australia and Us-based production company Grace has acquired world rights from Sony/Atv Music Publishing to the Beatles’ music catalogue for the animation series.
The deal follows a presentation by Wakely that Sony/Atv managing director Damian Trotter described as “too good to pass up”.
Wakely conceived of the animated series designed for children that uses original storylines interwoven with The Beatles songs to tell the story of young bugs in a magical, overgrown backyard.
“The idea emerged out of a deep love and respect for The Beatle’s music and a desire to create a timeless program that could be enjoyed as much by young children as their parents,” said Wakely.
The former writer on BAFTA-nominated Australian family series Lockie Leonard is also developing a series of features including Born To Run and musical rom-com Mixtape.

Has an Australian filmmaker finally cracked the rarely attempted romantic comedy genre? Colin Delaney visits the set of Not Suitable for Children to find out if Oscar nominated, first time feature director Peter Templeman’s flick about testicular cancer has the balls to make it big at the box office.

The event is not just thrown together either – flashing lights and disco balls suggest the members of this household take their parties seriously. Remember that one year (2001) when the list-happy AFI (American Film Institute) decided to compete with the Globes and the Oscars in year end prizes? No, that didn't last long. But there's another AFI, The Australian Film Institute, that has been around for a long time and is in no such danger of being a one-off. This year, they're all about the amazing family crime drama Animal Kingdom which they awarded with a record breaking 18 nominations. Sure, the film is in danger of being way overhyped for people who are coming to it late (which is just about everyone given the sorry state of international distribution for dramas of virtually any kind) but for those who can slough off the "omg" raves, I guarantee you'll think it at least an insinuating and well executed crime drama.

Possession(s), a new Australian short, featured one of the most notable launches in recent memory. To coincide with the film’s release a famous Peter Booth artwork, Painting (Man With Bandaged Head), was sold off in The Deutscher and Hackett Important Fine Art Auction.
The tie-in between the film and the auction comes in the shape of actor Laurence Fuller who used the painting, which he owned, as inspiration for the dark, brooding short. His character Frank, upon seeing the Peter Booth work, becomes embroiled with a sense of obsession; he simply has to own the piece and will do anything to make it so. However, it soon becomes clear that Frank is not the only one consumed by the desire to possess.
Laurence Fuller shines in the lead role and it is easy to see why he is a much sought after young actor. Having attended the Method...
