Having seen rough cuts of the film, as well as the final product in various film festivals, I surely must commend Mr Prost on Blue Jay Way: not only for personal reasons, but also as an average film-goer. The message is simple, but very well painted and fantastically accurate. Certainly leaps ahead of the other tripe I've been subjected to this year. The coming and going of Jay's schoolmates throughout the film, and their inconsistency or lack of concern symbolise the same emotions one may experience on a larger scale throughout life. That Jay remains in an unchanging frame of mind as everyone else we see jumps through the hoops of high school existence allows the audience to look at this social crowd (perhaps even their own) from the outside. The airy atmosphere of the film, achieved through the music and the cinematography, encourages the audience's serious thought and consideration of the ideas expressed in the film. The soundtrack as well as the title, though not immediately obvious, are deeply symbolic, and when reflecting upon them, the viewer is given another emotion and another dimension, perhaps unexpected. If you have the means, it is my highest recommendation that you see Blue Jay Way.
