As Pennywise scares up record numbers, we pine for the return of another icon. In the wake of Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street coming along and changing the face of horror, New Line Cinema was appropriately dubbed “The House That Freddy Built”; after all, the ensuing franchise’s 10-year box office dominance turned the […]...

The death of horror pioneer Wes Craven has spawned an outpouring of warm remembrances from friends, collaborators and fellow fright-flick luminaries like John Carpenter and Joe Dante. See below for a roundup of reactions (to be updated throughout the week). New Line Cinema: In 1984, Wes Craven brought “A Nightmare on Elm Street” to New Line, and in so doing, altered the course of the studio’s history. We are eternally grateful to our friend and partner, and are proud to be “The House That Freddy Built”. Robert Englund: Rip Wes Craven, my director, my friend. A brilliant, kind, gentle and very funny man. A sad day on Elm St and everywhere. I'll miss him. — Robert B. Englund (@RobertBEnglund) August 31, 2015 Hollywood's lost a rare species in Wes Craven. The true Gentleman. — Robert B. Englund (@RobertBEnglund) August 31, 2015 William Friedkin: Wes Craven will be missed by all who Love and appreciate his work,...

Freddy's dead? Never. The House That Freddy Built (a.k.a. New Line Cinema) is reportedly remaking the Wes Craven classic "A Nightmare on Elm Street" -- for a second time -- after the Samuel Bayer-directed update failed to connect with audiences a few years ago. That film, which saw Jackie Earl Haley slipping on the razor-sharp claw and fedora hat formerly occupied by Robert Englund, grossed over $115 million worldwide but suffered from withering reviews and -- worst of all -- fan indifference. Silver lining: Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes, which produced the 2010 remake, doesn't appear to be involved this time around (if the report indeed turns out to be true/accurate). And screenwriter David Leslie Johnson ("Orphan," "The Walking Dead") seems like a reasonable (if not particularly inspired) choice to pen the script. But is this necessary? Absolutely not! Is it even welcome? Not as far as I'm concerned.

Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy is a four-hour documentary film that chronicles the entire Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, as well as chronicling the rise of New Line Cinema.
Co-directed by Daniel Farrands and Andrew Kasch, it presents the kinds of in-depth yet light-hearted gems fans care about, not the paint-by-numbers stuff your average studio-produced Blu-ray extra disc typically regurgitates. It was made by genre fans who approach it from a place of love, but more importantly by filmmakers who understand that nothing is precious and nothing is off-limits. Heather Langenkamp, who played the ultimate final girl Nancy Thompson in three of the Nightmare films, serves as executive producer and narrator.
In exploring the Elm Street saga, the film presents photographs, storyboards, conceptual art, publicity materials, archival documents, and behind-the-scenes footage that have never been previously shared. it expands on Wes Craven's motivations in creating the first...

Chicago – Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, Freddy Krueger. Yes, Wes Craven’s masterful creation deserves to be listed right along with the most legendary villains of all time, a case made complete by Warner’s excellent new “A Nightmare on Elm Street Collection,” featuring all 7 original films and a new half-hour documentary about the lasting power of the man with a claw for a hand.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Admittedly, there’s little new in this set for those of you who sprung for the previous Blu-ray editions of the first three films that were released over the last few years. This is more for those who haven’t yet picked up any of the Freddy saga and now want them all. And while the first and last (“Wes Craven’s New Nightmare”) are the only truly great films in the set, there are things to like about all of the movies (Ok, all...

It’s never cool to be the good girl. The one who’s kind to those she cares about, gets her work done, pays her bills on time, fends off undead killers plaguing your nightmares...
No, it’s way cooler to be a transgressor, a rebel, or hell, kind of a dick. Villains are transgressors, often seeming to speak the truth. The appeal of the villain is obvious, but what of the hero? Contemporary films would have us believe that our heroes are just as conflicted as the supposed villains, but within that we’ve lost the appeal the everyman (or woman) who rises to the challenge. Which brings us to Nancy Thompson.
Nancy Thompson is your all-American teen. She’s pretty but has uncontrollable hair. She’s funny and smart but her parents are messed up. She’s dating Johnny Depp and has a man coming after her...

Some films need to be reviewed twice, or even several times; with each generation, there may be a new way to interpret it. Approaching it 30 years after the fact, Nightmare on Elm Street has only become further distinguished from its era and the genre it spawned in the years since its release. Though its immense popularity at the time is doubtlessly due to Robert Englund’s performance as Freddy Krueger, its enduring appeal can be chalked up to its wit, its intelligence, and its uncommon sensitivity to the pain and suffering of its teenage victims. Even after Happiness, American Beauty, and almost countless indie dramas, Elm Street makes the most trenchant statements about living in the suburbs that any American film has ever made, and it makes it with the clarity that only a slasher film could.

Chicago – I haven’t seen it yet but just watching the original “A Nightmare on Elm Street” in gorgeous HD has me pumped up for the Platinum Dunes remake about to be released. The world could use a little more Freddy Krueger (played by the excellent Jackie Earle Haley in the remake), one of the most memorable creations in the history of horror.
Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0
Until the new “A Nightmare on Elm Street” hits theaters on April 30th, pick up the wildly influential 1984 Wes Craven film, available in HD for the first time. Even though I’ve seen “Nightmare” several times over the years, I’m still impressed by Craven’s best film, one that would change the horror world forever and one of which the quality has been kind of dismissed due to the inferiority of so many of the sequels that followed.
Subsequent Freddy films, chronicled in the...

The month of April is the month of Freddy Krueger. At the end of the month the remake launches and mid week A Nightmare on Elm Street finally moves to Blu-ray (April 13th). The film in the digital format will have a slew of extras including a director's commentary, a crew commentary (with a dozen participants), three alternative endings, and three featurettes. The transfer has been described as excellent (Monsters) and those wanting to amp themselves up for the big screen release might want to sit down with the original in the best quality available. The original trailer for the film with a complete list of extras are below.
The synopsis for the original 1984 The Nightmare on Elm Street:
"On Elm Street, Nancy Thompson and a group of her friends including Tina Gray, Rod Lane and Glen Lantz are being tormented by a clawed killer in their dreams named Freddy Krueger.

The official Stateside Blu-ray release of A Nightmare on Elm Street is just a couple of short weeks away, and to celebrate this classic film's high definition debut, Warner Brothers has shared a couple of clips to get you guys in the spirit of things!
Synopsis:
“1, 2, Freddy’s coming for you.” And here he is, phantom fiend Freddy Krueger in all his razor-fingered infamy. Wes Craven (Scream movies) directs this trendsetting first in the slash-hit series. The premise is simple: Freddy (Robert Englund) homicidally haunts the sleep of Elm Street teens. The results are terrifying and mind-blowingly innovative. There’s another film debut too: Johnny Depp. He plays the ready steady of the hottie mcsmarty (Heather Langenkamp) who figures a clever way to flambé the fiend. But ever-say-die Freddy will be 3, 4 back for more ... even returning to the screen in a killer 2010 remake of this diabolical original. Sweet dreams!
