We know that the MonsterVerse franchise is extremely popular. What started off as a Godzilla and King Kong reboot became a major cinematic franchise that brought the studio a lot of money. In the meantime, a television series – Monarch: Legacy of Monsters – was also launched and became a global hit, with fans eagerly awaiting a new season. The series was co-created by Matt Fraction and Chris Black, and the latter is going to be at the center of this report.
The topic we wanted to share with you is related to an interview between Christopher Rosen and Chris Black, one of the co-creators of the series. The two of them had a talk as part of the GoldDerby podcast and it was so interesting that we absolutely had to report on it.
As you can assume, Rosen and Black talked about a lot of things, but there is a very interesting one that was discussed,...

The first season of Legendary’s MonsterVerse TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters ran on Apple TV+ from November into January (you can read our own Alex Maidy’s review of the first batch of episodes Here), and while Godzilla was an important figure in that season, it wrapped up with an episode that indicated Kong might be taking the spotlight if there were to be a follow-up. The show was co-developed by Chris Black (Star Trek: Enterprise) and Matt Fraction (Hawkeye), and during a recent interview with Gold Derby, Black said that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 is aiming to be bigger and better – while giving viewers the Kong action they’re hoping to see.
Black told Gold Derby (with thanks to our friends at Bloody Disgusting for the transcription), “I think where we left the season gave us so much fertile territory for storytelling. Keiko comes back, we...

After a no-brainer Dlc crossover with Lovecraftian fishing sim Dredge that was released last year, Mintrocket’s Dave the Diver is pulling another no-brainer with its next Dlc: bringing the King of the Monsters himself, Godzilla, into the game as a free Dlc. Available now, the Dlc adds Godzilla-related content to Dave the Diver, along with some tweaks and bug fixes.
The story goes that G-Force has been following Godzilla, leading them to the depths of the Blue Hole. While doing his diving thing, Dave is confronted with Godzilla, injured and recovering from his wounds. It’s not long before one of Godzilla’s foes, the mutated crustacean Ebirah, shows up to cause trouble.
The Godzilla Dlc adds three new missions that centre around the kaiju himself, along with new dishes inspired by Godzilla and Ebirah. You can also collect Godzilla figures that have been scattered throughout the ocean.

Earlier this week, we learned that Adam Wingard will no longer direct the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire sequel. He previously helmed Godzilla vs. Kong, but cut his teeth on smaller action movies like You're Next and The Guest.
Today, we bring word from scooper @MyTimeToShineH that Wingard is in the running to helm Spider-Man 4 for Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures.
His potential hiring would almost certainly divide opinions, though it's worth noting that Wingard currently has plans to helm a new action thriller, Onslaught, which is prepping for a fall shoot. That alone likely takes him out of the running.
The director also seems far more interested in finally bringing Thundercats to the big screen.
"Simon [Barrett] and I are still actively working on the script," he said earlier this year. "We finished our last draft basically right when I was going into production on [Godzilla x...

“Nothing is so strong as gentleness, nothing so gentle as real strength,” remarked Francis de Sales. This seemingly contradictory adage finds a home not only in the 16th century but also in female movie characters from the Japanese Godzilla series. The Godzilla saga, which celebrates its 70th birthday this year, features numerous inspiring women. Refer to “Gojira,” the 1954 original, for a glimpse at its first, Emiko Yamane (Momoko Kochi). Emiko's tender heart shines in her caregiving for the film's wounded and her convictions that compel scientist Daisuke Serizawa to use his apocalyptic Oxygen Destroyer device against Godzilla. Noriko Oishi (Minami Hamabe) is the franchise's most recent figure of female endurance in “Godzilla Minus One” (2023): she courageously rears a small child—not even her own—following postwar Japan's devastation while living with an emotionally tortured, disgraced young Kamikaze who doesn't intend to marry her (a precarious...

The next installment in the Jurassic World franchise continues to build its main cast, with THR reporting tonight that Rupert Friend (Asteroid City) is the latest actor to sign on.
He’ll join the previously announced Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer), and Jonathan Bailey (Wicked) in the franchise’s next film.
Gareth Edwards (2014’s Godzilla, The Creator) will be directing the new installment, with original Jurassic Park writer David Koepp returning to write the screenplay.
Jurassic World returns to theaters on July 2, 2025. Stay tuned for more.
The new movie is expected to usher in a brand new Jurassic Era with Jurassic World cast members Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard not expected to return. Don’t expect the original trilogy’s Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern and Sam Neill, either. The new Jurassic World, from what we gather, plans to take the franchise in a new direction,...

The MonsterVerse has, somewhat quietly, become one of the most reliable franchises going in Hollywood at the moment. For a full decade dating back to 2014's "Godzilla" right up through this year's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," these films have built up a loyal audience with no signs of fatigue on the part of the viewers. While Warner Bros. and Legendary are quickly looking to get a new installment going, they will need a new director, as we recently learned that Adam Wingard will not be returning to the helm. So, who should take his place?
Wingard is the only filmmaker to direct two MonsterVerse installments, having helmed 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong" as well as "The New Empire," which now ranks as the highest-grossing "Godzilla" movie ever. So sure, the studio would probably have liked him to return, but he's busy with other projects. Besides, that just opens the...

With the release of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” on May 10, this year’s Best Visual Effects Oscar race just got a lot more interesting. That’s because we’re almost guaranteed to get three, possibly even four, movies in the race that are follow-ups to previous Visual Effects nominees. “Apes” is likely to be the fourth movie in its franchise nominated for the innovative performance capture used to help create the film’s photo-realistic apes. Three previous films, starring Andy Serkis, were nominated for Oscars in the category in 2011, 2014, and 2017, but none of them won.
The work done by director Wes Ball and his team has made “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” a serious contender in multiple below-the-line categories, not just visual effects. Its production design and sound are equally impressive. But the academy branch that’s most likely to be impressed will be the...

Steven Spielberg was instrumental in making Jurassic World (2015) the third-highest-grossing film at the time of its release. Spielberg, who served as an executive producer in the film, suggested the idea of a functional dinosaur park to the writers. The film has now dropped a few positions on the box office-based ranking but remains the best among the Jurassic Park sequels.

It was recently announced that Warner Bros./Legendary are officially moving forward with a follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, with writer Dave Callaham enlisted to pen the script for the untitled movie.
There was no mention of a potential director at the time, but it seems Adam Wingard, who helmed The New Empire and its predecessor Godzilla vs. Kong, was set to return.
Was being the operative word.
According to THR, Wingard is no longer in line to direct the project. Though the report stresses that he didn't have a deal in place, anyway, it sounds like he was tentatively attached prior to a parting of ways, which is described as "amicable and stemming from timing issues," with the door remaining "open for a future return."

It looks like the third film for the Godzilla x Kong franchise won’t be happening soon after director Adam Wingard exits the project. The latest installment, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, has proved to be a tremendous success for Legendary Pictures.

Wingard co-wrote and helmed The New Empire with the intention of telling more stories from the famed MonsterVerse. He also revealed he’s working on another project which may have caused the delay of another Godzilla movie.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was released a couple of months ago as the most recent installment in the MonsterVerse franchise. And while the movie received mixed reviews from critics and is one of the installments with the lowest score, the fans loved it and the movie became one of the biggest titles on the box office this year, earning a lot of money. The movie was directed by Adam Wingard and it was actually expected that the director would remain with the franchise, as per our earlier reports. But, sad news comes from Hollywood, as it has been confirmed that Wingard quit the franchise (for now), so he won’t be the director of the planned Godzilla x Kong 3 movie.

Who's ready to start their midweek, Hump Day grind on a bit of a mixed note? The good news is that I'll never again use the phrase "Hump Day grind" because, frankly, that just sounds unbearably filthy. Okay, the real good news is that Warner Bros. Discovery and Legendary Pictures continue to be in the business of making money and remain intent on keeping their kaiju-sized MonsterVerse movies going. The bad news, unfortunately, is that the next installment will have to do so without the involvement of director and writer Adam Wingard.
For those who've enjoyed the franchise's pivot towards rampant silliness throughout both "Godzilla vs Kong" in 2021 and its sequel, "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," it appears that the MonsterVerse must change course once again. The director of the last two Godzilla and Kong movies has opted to not return for a third, as Adam Wingard focuses on other projects.
Given that Adam Wingard has a film slate that is dauntingly long, it was always pretty clear that something would have to give. As well as a presumed third instalment in the Godzilla and Kong joined franchise (feel free to join those two names with a Vs or an X or whatever works for you), the in-demand director has a laundry list of other projects.
There’s a sequel to John Woo’s beloved 1997 action movie, Face/Off that we know is in the works. That one seems to be gathering a little pace too, with reports emerging last month stating that both Nicolas Cage and John Travolta are willing to reprise their roles from the original film. THR reports that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard will not return for the sequel. According to insiders, the split is amicable and was due to scheduling issues, but the door remains open for Wingard to come back to the franchise down the line.
The studio had been keen on Wingard returning for the Godzilla x Kong sequel, but no deal was in place for him to do so. The director had been open to returning, previously saying, “There’s always the seduction of making a trilogy out of it, and I think that there’s some untapped areas to go into. Godzilla and Kong have smashed their last building for Adam Wingard. At least for now.
Wingard, who has directed the last two of Legendary’s hit MonsterVerse movies, will not be returning for a third installment, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
The parting of ways is described as amicable and stemming from timing issues. The door remains open for a future return, per insiders.
Wingard is coming off directing and co-writing Godzilla x Kong: New Empire, which has grossed over $564 million worldwide since its March 29 domestic opening. Wingard, who didn’t have a deal for any new installment, said he had more stories to tell during the press tour but also unveiled a new original feature project that he wanted to tackle before another monster movie. That project, an action thriller titled Onslaught, was picked up in a competitive sale by A24 and is prepping for a fall shoot.

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” (Warner Bros.), the year’s second-biggest grossing film so far (after the same studio’s “Dune: Part Two”). The $19.99 rental was an immediate #1 on both the iTunes (transaction counting) and Fandango (revenue) VOD charts.
The release comes 46 days after its theatrical opening, a fairly standard delay if not a bit longer. Meanwhile, “Godzilla Minus One” (Toho), the sleeper Japanese success and Oscar Visual Effects winner, has now passed the five-week mark since its domestic release with no home viewing options in sight.
The timing is tied to agreements between Legendary Films (the domestic “Godzilla” licensee) and the franchise’s Japanese owner to not directly compete with each other. As the Warners film advances in its home availability ($5.99 rentals and Max streaming still to come), it remains to be seen when Toho’s film will be permitted.

Established in 1932, Japan’s Toho Group has grown into a film-industry powerhouse, not only at home but globally. Working across production, distribution and exhibition, it has recently been on an expansion spree, reeling in box office around the world and with recognition from major awards bodies.
Long synonymous with Godzilla, which it launched in 1954, Toho this year broke out in another way, as its phenom Godzilla Minus One went on to win the VFX Oscar, a first for the Kaiju, or “strange beast,” monster genre.
Indicative of the company’s status, Toho president and CEO Hiro Matsuoka, gave an opening-day address at CinemaCon in April. Deadline spoke with Matsuoka about the company’s outlook and strategy for the years ahead.

DC Studios is developing Booster Gold as a TV series for Max. While rumours of production beginning imminently appear to be incorrect, it seems casting may be heating up as the Dcu readies itself for a superhero unlike any other.
In the comics, Mike Carter was a college football star in the 25th Century who ruined his career by wagering money on his own games. Forced to take a job as a security guard in the Metropolis Space Museum, he stole future tech to travel back in time and become a "superhero" (all while hoping to monetise being a good guy).
He'd later become a genuine time-travelling superhero and is a character who might be a game-changer for the Dcu. While casting such a complex character won't be easy, we have some suggestions which could do Booster justice both on streaming and in theaters.

If there's one thing that actor Maika Monroe is going to do, it's put on a brilliant performance in a critically-acclaimed horror movie that's destined to be underseen and underappreciated by most of the general moviegoing public at large. The scream queen's first real breakthrough role came in 2014's "The Guest" and she wasted no time following that up with "It Follows" (which is receiving a sequel with the original cast reprising their roles), 2022's criminally underrated "Watcher," and the Paramount+ original "Significant Other."
This time, however, the star is backed up by none other than Nicolas Cage and actor-turned-director Oz Perkins on "Longlegs" in the hopes that audiences will be right on time to appreciate whatever scares and compelling imagery await. This latest horror feature comes with a fair amount of hype behind it, with previous trailers setting the stage for an occult thriller with one heck of an unsettling sense of atmosphere.

Johnny Depp won several hearts for his performance as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. But with his court trial against Amber Heard and the domestic abuse allegations made Disney fire him from the franchise. Amidst it all, the franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed speaking to Depp about appearing in the movie.

Over the weekend we reported about The Fall Guy hitting VOD services a mere 17 days after its opening weekend. While we know that is primarily a result of Universal being allowed to do so in an agreement that lets them pull a movie’s theatrical run if it underperforms, it did bring up another point on the opposite side. What happens when a movie does insanely well at the box office, with critics and on the awards circuit but still doesn’t have a home video or streaming release? That’s precisely the case with Godzilla Minus One, which pulled in $115.8 million worldwide on a $10-12 million budget.
Despite those box office numbers, Godzilla Minus One is nowhere to be legitimately found in North America. Keep in mind also that the film made its North American debut December 1st — that’s almost half a year ago!

Godzilla is one of modern pop culture’s most recognizable monsters, being the trope codified for an entire genre of films. While there have been many stories about how Godzilla was conceived as an idea, Life magazine published a special article about the nuclear menace, detailing how Godzilla was conceived in the mind of producer Tomoyuki Tanaka.

The producer was responsible for a film that was being made as a collaboration between Japan and Indonesia. However, due to rising political tensions, the film was dropped from the production schedule as Indonesia decided to back off from the project, which left a very large unallocated budget in the hands of Tomoryuki Tanaka.

Andy Serkis is one of Hollywood’s finest go-to actors for playing motion-capture roles in films. He played Caesar in the Planet of the Apes trilogy, Gollum in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit films, and the titular character in 2005’s King Kong. However, many fans wouldn’t be aware of his role as a Performance Capture Consultant in Gareth Edwards’ 2014 kaiju film, Godzilla. Serkis explained that it was not a full-on acting role like his other monster roles.

Fighter To Manjummel Boys – Take A Look At Top 10 Films At The Indian Box Office In 2024. (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Unlike 2023, 2024 is missing some really big hits from Bollywood. While last year began on a rocking note with Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, Hrithik Roshan’s Fighter failed to ignite that kind of fire during this Republic Day weekend. But still, with whatever collection it amassed at the Indian box office, the biggie is sitting right at the top in the list of highest net grossers of 2024. Keep reading to know more!
Soon, the fifth month of 2024 will be closing, and so far, we can clearly see a domination of the Malayalam film industry in terms of big successes. But if we talk purely on the basis of collection, the list is topped by Bollywood, as no film has crossed Fighter‘s 212.50 crores so far. Even Tollywood saw a 200 crore net...

According to the lore of Ishiro Honda's original Godzilla film "Gojira" (1954), the title monster came into being as the direct result of nuclear tests held in out in the Pacific. An unseen ancient sea creature was exposed to radiation from said tests, causing it to mutate into a 130-meter-tall amphibious dinosaur-like behemoth that climbs out of the ocean and lays waste to cities in Japan. It crushed buildings underfoot and can breathe clouds of destructive radiation. Nothing seems to be able to stop it.
"Gojira" was partially inspired by the real-life Daigo Fukuryu Maru disaster, an even in which a Japanese fishing vessel was exposed to nuclear radiation during the United States' Castle Bravo H-bomb tests. One of the sailors died, the rest of the crew was sick, and the Japanese public became concerned that the fish may have been tainted. Nuclear fears were justifiably high in 1954, making Honda's film incredibly timely.

The best thing the MonsterVerse has done is to unite two icons of cinema, Godzilla and Kong. Sure, 2014's "Godzilla" and "Kong Skull Island" may have ranked higher on our list of the best MonsterVerse movies, but it was with "Godzilla vs. Kong" that the franchise found its secret weapon — a big ape and a big lizard begrudgingly teaming up. Since then, the MonsterVerse has given us grand entertainment that only an IP-obsessed Hollywood could provide, while also fitting right in with the weirdness and silliness of the Showa era of monster movies.
Alongside its stakes, the MonsterVerse has also grown in mythology, as it introduced the concept of Hollow Earth, a whole unique world with its own lore, locations, and characters. That being said, these movies aren't exactly what you should watch if you want immediate answers to questions about lore of backstories — especially not about the Titans. After all,...

10. Jake Sully from Avatar (2009)
James Cameron has always been one of the most celebrated directors, and the Avatar movies are among his greatest feats. Cameron managed to create visually stunning sensations that earned billions — but none of that can be attributed to Jake Sully, Avatar’s main character whose name and motives no one even remembers.
9. Sam Witwicky from Transformers (2007–2023)
Unlike in the previous case, Transformers’ Sam Witwicky adds a lot to his movie and is far from your generic action hero. But that’s pretty much his main problem: there’s little to nothing we can remember about Sam other than the facts that he was an anxious nerdy teenager who somehow pulled Megan Fox. So… Yeah. Sorry, Sam.
8. Jupiter Jones from Jupiter Ascending (2015)

Andy Serkis is no stranger to dual roles. The groundbreaking pioneer in motion-capture work may be most well known among general audiences for his casting in "The Lord of the Rings" as Gollum/Sméagol, everybody's favorite two-faced little gremlin, but that only scratches the surface of his contributions to film over the decades. Serkis has since expanded his talents from acting to directing ("Mowgli: The Legend of the Jungle" and "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" were but a warm-up for his recent announcement as director and star of "The Hunt for Gollum"), delivered a genuinely award-worthy performance as the ape Caesar in the previous "The Planet of the Apes" trilogy, and even found time to depict two very different "Star Wars" characters as Supreme Leader Snoke in "The Last Jedi" and hardened prisoner Kino Loy in "Andor."

"This isn't art. It isn't even great trash. It's a con game, and we bear the claw marks." That's what critic Rita Kempley wrote for the Washington Post in a particularly scathing review of Roland Emmerich's 1998 movie, "Godzilla." It was the first attempt by Hollywood to bring the classic monster to life in America, and it was a spectacular failure. That's what Warner Bros., Legendary, and director Gareth Edwards were working against while crafting 2014's "Godzilla." Skepticism was built in. They had to prove that a film within this franchise made outside of Japan could work.
They did that and then some.

Director Gareth Edwards rose to prominence with the sci-fi film Monsters, before directing Godzilla. The latter laid the foundation for the Monsterverse, which is thriving even today. In response, Edwards revealed the one mistake he made with Godzilla that held the film back, which he was determined to rectify at all costs with Rogue One. In April 2024, Naoya Matsumoto’s Kaiju No. 8 anime series hit the screens, and for the first time in years, fans believed that they might have found something unique. What's in a roar? Well, if it belongs to a ginormous prehistoric reptilian monster like Godzilla, it matters as much as what the creature represents or makes us feel. Godzilla's roar has evolved over the years — the original sound resembled a shrill "Skreeeonk!" as described in Dark Horse's "Godzilla" comics, and went on to alternate between deep, guttural sounds and high-pitched screeches that feel otherworldly. Akira Ifukube, who created the score for Ishirō Honda's "Godzilla", was the one who crafted the monster's distinctive disyllabic roar. This was not an easy task to accomplish, especially in 1954, when most creature sounds were created organically with minimal reliance on technological tweaks. How did Ifukube and Honda decide on a sound that would go on to constitute the heart and soul of such a beloved character?
For starters, Ifukube did not believe that Godzilla should roar at all, as the creature's reptilian...
