It looks like studio insiders are starting to point the finger at Tom Cruise for all of the faults in The Mummy. The movie was supposed to be the big awesome film to launch Universal Pictures' Dark Universe. These movies would build a monster universe that would also include Frankenstein, The Wolfman, The Invisible Man, and more. Unfortunately, the movie didn't do as well as the studio hoped and the critics haven't been too kind to it either.
According to Variety, The Mummy ended up being "a textbook case of a movie star run amok." The report goes on to say that Cruise had “excessive control” over the creative direction of the story.
"Universal, according to sources familiar with the matter, contractually guaranteed Cruise control of most aspects of the project, from script approval to post-production decisions. He also had a great deal of input on the film’s marketing and release strategy,...

The holidays are typically a time when we’re urged to think outside of ourselves and to be more empathetic about the plight of others less fortunate. Put yourself in some poor soul’s shoes and figure out how you can make their life better. And now, some suggest, we have a new tool to improve our empathy: virtual reality.
Vr, these boosters say, can immerse you in the real world and its travails, whether that’s to see what it’s like in prison, an ebola epidemic, clear-cutting a forest, or living in a Syrian refugee camp. Academics are diving deep into the possibilities, as are therapists, activists, journalists and others.

If the first week of July - when Pokémon Go blew through the zeitgeist - was augmented reality’s coming-out party, is this current week or two the same for virtual reality?
On Thursday, October 13, Sony’s Vr headset debuted in stores, just days after both Google and Facebook held big events spotlighting their takes on the hardware needed to view virtual experiences.
Also on Thursday, the Vr Society opened its big two-day On the Lot conference at Paramount Pictures, featuring traditional Hollywood creators – such as directors Bryan Singer and James Foley, musician Will.I.Am, and comedian David Spade (who is a Sony favorite) – alongside top Vr execs from giants such as Google, Sony, Intel and Amd. Pretty much all of them were optimistically calling on creators to make more, more, more (and better) virtual content to attract more, more, more audiences and kickstart this new creative platform.

Zach Lipovsky is getting ready to direct the film adaptation of the popular zombie video game franchise, "Dead Rising." The film will be available in various streaming formats, and you'll have the ability to either watch it as one cohesive film, or as several short episodes. In adapting the franchise for the screen, Lipovsky has emphasized in a new interview that he wants to adapt the look and feel of the games without making a literal adaptation of one of the game entries.
"The film is set in a new outbreak with new heroes, in a new city," he tells /Film. "So it’s not a direct adaptation of one of the previous games, but it does fit into the cannon of the storyline," says Lipovsky, who rose to fame in 2007 when he appeared in Steven Spielberg's reality competition, On The Lot. Dead Rising, the film being developed for all forms of digital distribution that's based on the video game franchise that has sold over 6.5 million games, has landed a director. The man to helm the ambitious, digital project will be Zach Lipovsky, who rose to fame on the reality TV filmmaking competition produced by Steven Spielberg and Mark Burnett, "On The Lot."
A visual effects veteran, Lipovsky recently completed the horror reboot Leprechaun: Origins for WWE Studios. This live-action take on Dead Rising is being written by Tim Carter, who will also serve as a producer for the project- just as he did for Machinima's "Mortal Kombat: Legacy" web series.

A film adaptation of Capcom’s popular survival horror video game franchise Dead Rising is shambling steadily forward, with news that Legendary Pictures’ new Legendary Digital Media division has set Leprechaun: Origins director Zach Lipovsky to helm the film, which will exclusively debut on Crackle before hitting Blu-Ray, TV and VOD services.
It’s exciting to see Lipovsky score a gig like this – the only reality TV show I ever invested time in was On the Lot, a short-lived filmmaking competition on which he placed fifth. Back then, I recall Lipovsky delivering some immensely enjoyable short films (see if you can find “Danger Zone” or “Die Hardly Working” online). Since that show, he has found success in horror – prior to Leprechaun: Origins, Lipovsky directed Tasmanian Devils and co-produced Afflicted.
Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing the Dead Rising adaptation, which boasts a script by Mortal Kombat: Legacy producer Tim Carter.

Director Adam Wingard has received rave reviews for his R-rated, home invasion horror-comedy You’re Next, which screened at several film festivals over the past couple of years and will be released August 23. But his often gore-drenched creative sensibility — and twisted sense of humor — is not everyone’s cup of Darjeeling. In the spring of 2007, for instance, the then just the 24-year-old Wingard appeared on the premiere episode of Fox TV’s On The Lot, a much-hyped but now little-remembered, Steven Spielberg-produced filmmakers’ competition with the first prize of a million-dollar development deal at Dreamworks. As Wingard recalls, he...

We're still waiting to find out how a less jokey, more murderous Chucky will go over with fans of the "Child's Play" series. "Curse of Chucky" sets the maniacal Good Guy doll in a darker story, minus the comedy. Director Don Mancini and series writer-producer David Kirschner promised new thrills, and genre icon Brad Dourif will be back to voice the tiny terror. Star Fiona Dourif posted a photo with the new Chucky on her Instagram account this week, and we approve. The differences are subtle, but definitely creepy.
In "Curse of Chucky," Nica (Fiona Dourif) is devastated by her mother's suicide, but locks horns with her older sister (Danielle Bisutti) while trying to settle their mother's affairs. Meanwhile, big sis' daughter is distracted by a mysterious, red-haired doll named Chucky that arrives in the mail. The family doesn't realize that Chucky has a 20-year-old score to settle. Six years after becoming a semifinalist on Steven Spielberg’s short-lived filmmaking competition show On The Lot, Zach Lipovsky will at last see all his youthful dreams and ambitions fulfilled by directing Lionsgate’s reboot of Leprechaun—the pot of gold at the end of his very own rainbow, guarded by a nasty leprechaun who occasionally raps. Lionsgate and WWE Studios have hired Zach Lipovsky to direct their upcoming remake of the absurd horror film Leprechaun. The Wrap points out that Lipovsky was discovered as a contestant on the Steven Spielberg reality series On the Lot, which centered on 16 aspiring filmmakers competing for a development deal with DreamWorks. Since then he's made some short films and directed some TV movies.
WWE's Dylan "Hornswoggle" Postl will play the Leprechaun, who was previously played by Warwick Davis in the 1993 original, which also launched Jennifer Aniston's career.

I'm not sure which part of this story is stranger: the fact that someone is remaking Leprechaun or the fact that it is being made by someone whose biggest claim to fame is appearing on a reality TV show.
First, the remake. Lionsgate and WWE Studios have teamed to reboot Leprechaun, the insane cult classic which launched sequels that sent the leprechaun to space and da hood. Newcomer Harris Wilkinson is writing the script, and WWE superstar Hornswaggle will star as the leprechaun. Details on the reboot are being kept under wraps, so I am assuming that it will be more serious than the original.
Next, the director. Zach Lipovsky. Lipovsky started as an actor in a handful of Canadian TV shows (including an episode of Goosebumps) before transitioning to digital and visual effects. In 2007, he won On the Lot, a short-lived Fox reality show in which aspiring filmmakers compete...

WWE Studios have snared the multifaceted Zach Lipovsky ('On the Lot') to helm their new horror reboot of 'Leprechaun'. The original version from back in 1993 spawned 5 sequels and starred 'Lifes Too Short' actor Warwick Davis as the little green bastard and saw a young Jennifer Aniston make her first proper feature debut. Lipovsky will helm from a script penned by Harris Wilkinson which is said to have no connections to the mythology of the franchise but will be darker and a more traditional horror. WWE Studios and Lionsgate have found a star and director for the reboot of Leprechaun...
You'll find no shortage of love for the Leprechaun movies around these parts, with the mighty Warwick Davis taking the lead in the 1993 original. However, the fickle remake machine has now arrived firmly at Leprechaun's door, with Lionsgate and WWE Studios confirmed to be rebooting the franchise (which was previously chatted about last year).
Furthermore, they've got a director and star in place for the new Leprechaun movie already.
WWE star Hornswoggle is going to be taking on the title role this time around (real name: Dylan Postl). The man chosen to direct is Zach Lipovsky, who came to prominence in the Steven Spielberg-backed reality TV series, On The Lot. He won the show, and got a development deal with DreamWorks as a result. And now he's landed a feature directing gig.

About a year ago, Lionsgate and WWE Studios decided to reboot the "Leprechaun" franchise, which will star WWE wrestler Dylan Postl (Hornswoggle). And now comes word that the two companies have found a director. According to The Wrap, visual effects specialist Zach Lipovsky has been hired to direct the new movie. Lipovsky was a finalist on Fox's reality show "On the Lot," which was produced by Steven Spielberg. He directed numerous short films and TV movies, but never a theatrical film. The original "Leprechaun" film starred Warwick Davis and Jennifer Aniston. It was part comedy, part horror. The new version will be much darker and won't be connected to any previous installments.

The question you might be asking yourself right now is ‘Leprechaun reboot? That’s a thing?’ Yes, gentle reader, that is indeed a thing and it now has a director in Spielberg discovery Zach Lipovsky.
You’ve probably not heard of Lipovsky either, but he appeared on the reality series On The Lot, in which aspiring filmmakers competed for a deal with DreamWorks. Does this mean that Spielberg has anything to do with the reboot? Nope. But it gives the guy a little bit of credibility.
Right. Lipovsky will direct the reboot of the 1993 classic (?) Leprechaun. The original starred Warwick Davis (who else?) as an evil little Irish caricature searching for his pot o’gold and … well, pretty much killing everyone in the process. The reboot will star WWE star Hornswoggle as the title character. It’s being produced, unsurprisingly, by WWE Studios and Lionsgate, so … yeah.

2013 marks the twenty-year anniversary of the release of Leprechaun. After making six films in ten years, which included a trip to space and two trips to “tha hood,” and then taking ten years off, it appears the Leprechaun is ready to make a comeback. Lionsgate will work with WWE studios to produce a reboot starring Hornswoggle, a little person and professional wrestler who for a time dressed as a leprechaun. The Wrap reports that the film will be directed by Zach Lipovsky, a visual-effects artist who first made himself known as a finalist on the Steven Spielberg– and Mark Burnett–produced reality show On the Lot. Not much else is known about the reboot, but we assume, if it’s like the originals, it will be vaguely scary, kind of campy, and a little racist.

Looks like we can add “Hornswoggle” to the list of lucky charms: After the WWE star signed on to play the title role in a reboot of horror series “Leprechaun,” the film has finally found its director. The Wrap reports that visual effects specialist Zach Lipovsky will helm the long-awaited feature, based on the 1993 flick starring Warwick Davis and Jennifer Anniston. Lipovsky, who got his big break when he won the short-lived Steven Spielberg-Mark Burnett reality series “On the Lot,” has directed numerous short films and TV movies, but never a theatrical feature. “Leprechaun,” which toed the line between horror and comedy and spawned several sequels, focused on an evil leprechaun searching for his pot of gold and dodging four-leaf clovers. Producers of the reboot have been mum about what screenwriter Harris Wilkinson's script entails, preferring the franchise's new direction remain a mystery – though Hornswoggle's WWE affiliation...

Emerging writer-director Zach Lipovsky has a handful of TV movies under his belt, but he's best known for appearing on the reality TV game show On the Lot, where he was one of 16 aspiring filmmakers competing for a development deal at DreamWorks. Lipovsky didn't win that prize, but now he's found his own pot of gold. The Wrap reports Lipovsky has signed with Lionsgate and WWE Studios to helm their Leprechaun reboot. With a background in visual effects, Lipovsky could be a good fit for the project, which will likely blend camp comedy and gory horror elements like the original franchise did. The original Leprechaun centered on a homicidal little man of myth who reigns terror on a young boy and his friends (which included pre-Friends Jennifer Aniston) once they accidentally steal his enchanted gold. The movie became infamous enough to spur a bunch of sequels like Leprechaun 4: In Space...

Lionsgate and WWE Studios have set visual-effects veteran Zach Lipovsky to direct "Leprechaun," the long-awaited reboot of the successful horror franchise that launched the career of Jennifer Aniston. Lipovsky was discovered as a contestant on Steven Spielberg and Mark Burnett's short-lived reality series "On the Lot," which saw 16 aspiring filmmakers compete for a development deal with DreamWorks. WWE superstar Hornswoggle (below) will play the title character, which was made famous in the original 1993 movie by Warwick Davis ("Willow"). The original "Leprechaun," which featured comedic elements, followed an evil leprechaun searching for...

Remember little Winnie Cooper from The Wonder Years? Well she grew up to be a wild flame thrower and kick some ass in the new SyFy original movie Tasmanian Devils. A new red-band trailer has been released for the TV movie, and it's packed full of blood and gore. This actually looks like a ton of ridiculous fun. Not only does it star Danica McKellar, but it also stars Apolo Ohno, who doesn't really last that long in the trailer. Here's the synopsis...
A group of daredevil base jumpers in a remote Tasmanian national park are pursued by grizzly bear-sized Tasmanian Devils – legendary creatures created to protect the land from intruders. The film stars Danica McKellar (The Wonder Years) and Olympian medalist Apolo Ohno.

A co-founder in 1994 of the Slamdance Film Festival, Dan Mirvish is a busy director, screenwriter and producer. Labeled a “cheerful subversive” by The New York Times, and “Hollywood’s Bad Boy” by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Mirvish has made quite a name for himself in the world of Independent Film. He remains actively involved with Slamdance, frequently serving as master of ceremonies and mentor to the incoming crop of filmmakers each year. The festival has served as a launching pad for such filmmakers as Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Inception), Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace), Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) and Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity).
Most recently, Mirvish has directed the feature Between Us, based on the hit Off-Broadway play of the same name and starring Julia Styles, Taye Diggs, Melissa George, and David Harbour. Mirvish co-wrote the screen adaptation with original playwright Joe Hortua...

How good is Steven Spielberg, really, for a young up-and-comer's career? Ask Will Bigham, winner of the 2007 Fox reality show "On the Lot," who counts Spielberg as a mentor and Paramount chief Adam Goodman as a "big fan." Bigham's TV triumph earned him a two-year development deal with DreamWorks, then owned by Paramount, worth $1 million. It also led to the founding of his own production shingle, Shamrock Motion Pictures. Yet five years later, Bigham, a 36-year old Texan with a wife and two kids, is just now directing his debut feature,...

I have featured Justin Gullett’s short film trailers before on this site and I am returning with another one. This one is called “Distortion” and believe it or not this thriller won Gullett a national award and three global awards through the online competition of the former reality series, “On the Lot,” known as the “Movie Making Challenge.” The American Idol-esque reality show was produced by three-time Academy Award winner Steven Spielberg and reality TV pioneer Mark Burnett.
Gullet was a contestant on the TV show as well as participated in the at-home competition that allowed anyone to enter his or her own videos online through TheLot.com.
“Distortion,” won week five — horror week — of the online challenge in where anyone could submit a two- to three-minute film for that week’s genre or theme. Here is where Gullet was about to pull out of the competition decided...

Over the past few years, we've seen many films that pay homage to 1980s cinema. Just last year there was Paul, Super 8, and Attack the Block, to name a few. Now audiences can prepare for another helping of nostalgia with Great Scott, a film that pays tribute to Robert Zemeckis' Back to the Future Trilogy. The movie takes place in 1980s Manchester, England and centers on a teenage boy who loves the sci-fi classic so much that he wants to become Marty McFly, attempting to escape his mundane, working-class life in the process. Financing will come from Philm Company, Sonic Screenworks and Lip Sync, who have helped produce such films as We Need to Talk About Kevin and Jane Eyre. Alex Child and Hiram Bleetman wrote the script and filming is planned to start this spring. While you may not recognize the name of the director, Phil Hawkins,...

Phil Hawkins, a filmmaker who was a contestant on the Steven Spielberg-produced filmmaking competition reality show On the Lot, has been tapped to direct Great Scott. The film is a love-letter inspired by — and, to some degree, dependent upon — Robert Zemeckis‘ beloved 80′s time-travel comedy Back to the Future. [Moviehole, via /Film]
Scripted by newbie writers Alex Child and Hiram Bleetman, Great Scott follows a working-class teen in the industrial wasteland of 1980′s Manchester, England who is so fed up with his existence that he longs to live out the big screen fantasies of everyone’s favorite reluctant time traveler, Marty McFly. And that’s all we know about the plot at this time. Given our ’80s remake mania, approaching that bygone (and best forgotten) era on this meta-level could prove more interesting that this project sounds at the moment.
More significantly (to me, anyway), this is perhaps the first time a...

Get ready to go Back to the Future with a new film that is going into production called Great Scott. Moviehole is reporting that the film is about a teenager in 1980′s Manchester, England who falls so in love with Robert Zemeckis’s 1985 hit that he tries to become Marty McFly. The main character is a slightly despondent working class teenager who would do anything to escape his mundane life and have the kind of adventures Marty McFly did in the hit film.
Phil Hawkins is set to direct the film based on a script by Alex Child and Hiram Bleetman. The project is a joint venture between Philm Company, Sonic Screenworks and Lip Sync. This is the same company that financed such recent films as We Need to Talk About Kevin and Jane Eyre.

Remember that reality show On the Lot? It was produced by Steven Spielberg and featured several aspiring filmmakers who shot their own short films each week and competed for the top prize of a "dream job" at DreamWorks? The show didn't do so well in the ratings, and wasn't as entertaining as Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's Project Greenlight series, but the contestants who starred have continued to work in the industry, with news arriving today that one of them is now set to direct some sort of Back to the Future love letter called Great Scott. Moviehole tells us that Phil Hawkins (The Butterfly Tattoo) will direct the film, based in England, which centers on a bored teenager living a mundane life who would do anything to live out the adventures of...

[1] It seems like just about everyone who grew up in the '80s and '90s considers themselves a fan of Robert Zemeckis' Back to the Future movies, and with good reason; that trilogy has held up surprisingly well over the years. But there's being a fan, and then there's being completely and utterly obsessed. Like, try-to-actually-become-Marty-McFly obsessed. Directed by Phil Hawkins, the upcoming Bttf-inspired Great Scott will be about a young man who falls squarely into the latter category. More about the film after the jump. MovieHole [2] reports that Great Scott will focus on an unhappy working class teen in '80s Manchester, England who develops a fixation on the 1985 sci-fi comedy classic and, along with it, a burning desire to leave behind his humdrum life and live out the adventures of his cinematic hero. It's not clear how closely Great Scott will mirror Back to the Future,...

Los Angeles — Breaking news from "The X Factor" set: They've moved the craft service table to a secret undisclosed location. Who knew fruit roll-ups, granola bars and coffee had so much in common with Dick Cheney?
In all seriousness, things are tense in the "X Factor" world. The contestants are still processing last week's shocking double-elimination. With two of the early front-runners gone, it's anyone's $5 million contract to win, and the five remaining singers know it — as does judge Simon Cowell, who was spotted having a cigarette break with a contestant with whom he hadn't interacted much previously. The words, "You could very well win it all," might have been uttered.

While Neil Patrick Harris is doing a one week stint in Regis' newly vacant shoes, it turns out his longtime partner, David Burtka, will actually be making the big media move.
In January, Burtka will begin as a correspondant for "E! News," as well as "Live from the Red Carpet" and other E! specials, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
It looks like we'll be seeing a lot more of Burtka -- and not just when his bouncing bundles of joy are in tow -- in his new role, he will conduct celebrity interviews, cover pop culture happenings and breaking news.
Burtka has appeared in such shows as (duh) "How I Met Your Mother," Steven Spielberg's "On The Lot" and "Crossing Jordan." He also has an impressive Broadway resume and he's a trained chef. Well done, Nph -- what a catch!
How do you feel about E! adding Burtka to its staff?...

.I.m the Juggernaut, bitch.. That classic line, as you know, comes from Brett Ratner.s X-Men: The Last Stand. It started as a lame Internet joke, yet found its way into a mainstream comic book blockbuster (where it didn.t belong) because Ratner, as a filmmaker, is eager to please a fanbase who.ll never accept him. And decisions such as this often make it hard to defend the man. But here goes nothing. Listen, Ratner gets a ton of shit. Some is self-inflicted. He regularly comes off as a smug, self-satisfied ass in interviews. And if you happened to catch Ratner on Fox.s atrocious reality competition On the Lot, I can understand why you might have sworn off of his movies. Yet, if you take the time and see his actual films, you.ll realize they.re not the work of Satan many make them out to...

Chance Encounters Is Directed by Young Memphis Filmmaker Justin Gullett
I came across this short film trailer the other day when a local Memphis reader pointed me to director, Justin Gullett. I couldn’t believe that this kid lived in the same city as me, Memphis. The short film trailer is for a movie called “Chance Encounters,” a concept that is somewhat similar to a recent Joseph Gordon-Levitt indie called, “Uncertainty,” however made way before that film. The short follows a man named Guy, who is tired of making choices and is cynical of their insignificance, he struggles to move in the face of fate when confronted with two choices that could change his life. In one encounter he meets a wild, sexy girl that loves having fun with him only to see her cheat on him. In the other encounter he meets a girl that he falls in love with,...

I don't remember much about television from my college years (no reason...), save for trying (and failing) to get every last one of my friends to watch "Arrested Development," the occasional "Power Puff Girls" or "Dexter's Laboratory" marathons on Cartoon Network (when it was good), and late, non-sober nights watching Cheaters. I actively hate the show, to me it's like if Pringles were cantaloupe, but I watched because they filmed it in the sprawling Dfw Metroplex, and that meant there was always a decent chance witnessing someone I knew ruin their lives. (This was exacerbated by all the Girls Gone Wild commercials that aired during the breaks, wherein I actually did once see somebody I knew - but that's a story for a different day.) As such, I don't remember much about the short-lived "Project Greenlight"/""American Idol" hybrid, "On the Lot."
