When guest stars falter
pfors-647-50149714 April 2013
The series' house troupe could always be counted on for entertainment values, which was vitally important when guest stars faltered, as in this undernourished backlot epic. Script gives bellicose Ed Begley too much license to bluster in his patented kingfish manner, and sultry Beverley Owen, who looks like she should be poised on a divan with a drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other, is miscast as his repressed daughter. By way of compensation: Lee J. Cobb gives his usual forceful portrayal of Judge Garth; effervescent Roberta Shore yodels charmingly; the athletic Doug McClure flashes some trick riding and the bunkhouse bonhomie of McClure, James Drury and Gary Clarke is as congenial as ever.

Plans all her own
bkoganbing24 December 2019
An old rival from Lee J. Cobb's early days, Ed Begley has come up from Texas looking to start a new spread there. Cobb welcomes him at first, but it becomes plain that Begley is looking to start another big Ponderosa type spread near Shiloh. Begley is not too squeamish about his methods either.

Begley has two sons and a daughter Beverly Owen whom he has plans to marry off in high society. So when Doug McClure starts paying attention that sets Begley off.

As it turns out Owen has plans all her own, that catch everyone by surprise in the end. They really come out of leftfield.

Begley and Cobb are something to see in this story.
