- [Hoby Gilman knocks on the fromt door of Judge Nelson Henry's house. The judge opens the door and steps outside]
- Judge Henry: Morning, Hoby.
- Hoby Gilman: Judge, is your son in?
- Judge Henry: He came in just a few minutes ago. Why?
- Hoby Gilman: I'd like to see 'im.
- Judge Henry: Is something wrong?
- Hoby Gilman: I'm afraid so.
- Judge Henry: What has Malcolm got to do with it?
- Hoby Gilman: He just killed a man.

- Aaron Adams: Look, why did he go to 'im, Hoby?
- Hoby Gilman: He wanted to get 'im away, till he could figure out something.
- Aaron Adams: Think he was gonna take 'im outta town, then?
- Hoby Gilman: Well I don't believe he was gonna help 'im escape, really; just needed time to think.
- Aaron Adams: I can understand it. Everybody in town knows he promised his wife he'd take good care of the boy. He sure tried.
- Hoby Gilman: Maybe that's it.
- Aaron Adams: Whatta you mean?
- Hoby Gilman: He tried too hard.
