He who runs away lives to run another day.
John Ritter is as hilarious as ever in this often very funny episode. The three young roommates take a break from their redecorating / repairs to eat & drink at the Regal Beagle. But a towering creep, Jeff (Peter Palmer), aggressively comes on to the girls, and Jack later experiences a severe crisis of self-confidence when he fails to properly stand up (in his own mind, anyway) to the bully. Meanwhile, Mr. Roper, in a foul mood due to a toothache, tells off the bully, actually earning the guys' respect; as a result, Roper is full of self-confidence, unlike Jack.
Whether Jack is pulling a prank in front of the girls (pretending to swallow a bunch of tacks), and getting pummeled with pillows afterwards, or trying to act like he knows martial arts, John Ritter is always a riot. Still, you do feel rather bad for him in the hours following the altercation in the pub. Most of us have had times in our lives where we think we failed in some capacity. The good thing is that you can never keep Jack down for long. The Ropers continue to get most of their comic value whenever they insult each other; Mr. Roper fires a zinger in relation to Helens' mother, and Norman Fell does another of his priceless smiles for the camera.
There are a number of great lines here, such as when Janet and Chrissy make pointed remarks regarding Jacks' admiration for the female form. One subplot details the fate of Mr. Ropers' Sunday edition of the paper, which got delivered to the kids' apartment by mistake.
The most memorable exchange of the episode:
Chrissy: "If women ran things, there'd be none of these stupid wars." Mr. Roper: "Yeah, all the countries would just nag each other to death."
Seven out of 10.
