While waiting for a bus, a college coed who doubles as a model is slashed with a knife, and one wound goes straight to the heart. A convict at San Quentin, who's a student at the same college learning a trade for when he is released, is scheduled to board the same bus. Instead, he runs like hell. The convict is caught soon afterward and assumed to be the killer, but he doesn't seem to have a motive. Stone wonders if one of the woman's fellow students might have had a grudge against her.
