Colonel Homer is one of the rare episodes with the writing credited to creator Matt Groening, and it's one of the three infidelity episodes of the classic years. The first, season 1's Life on the Fast Lane which has Marge tempted, is still my favourite. But this second one, which has Homer almost becoming unfaithful, is good too. We saw Homer tempted again in season 5, although I guess that episode can be distinguished from this one in that in season 5 Homer is more seriously tempted, and there Marge is oblivious while in Colonel Homer, she's suspicious and jealous.
But the big thing distinguishing the two episodes in which Homer is tested is that Colonel Homer has a country music and hillbillies theme, which makes this episode more colourful. The episode succeeds despite the fact that I normally don't like country music (with some exceptions- I think Garth Brooks isn't bad, and I love that Convoy song and the one where the devil goes down to Georgia). The music here is all right, and that song about bagging a Homer is particularly catchy. Beverly D'Angelo is good as Homer's love interest, Lurleen. And, Marge is naked in bed at the end- that's always sexy. But the icing on the cake may be the part where the hillbillies talk about being bitter after one catches his wife in bed with another man. This isn't my favourite season 3 episode, but it's well worth seeing.
