In the book "Live from New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live" Andrew Kurtzman recounts he was working on a sketch with host Sid Caesar that was a cross between Tootsie (1982) and Rocky (1976) which didn't make it to air. He remembers how Caesar was astonished to learn that the staff were writing 30 sketches each week and only 9 of which would go on into the show. Caesar felt the line-up should be decided during the first meeting, writing each idea as one line and picking out which ones to work out instead.
Both host Sid Caesar and co-music guest star Joe Cocker died in 2014.
